It's item #2192620419 This link might get you to the right page: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2192620419&ssPageName=ADM E:B:SS:US:1 Here's a description of the items: Today we have a neat old set of medals presented to Lieutenant William Holden ,Portville NY. There is a silver cross engraved Lut. Holden 116 NY Co. G 19 A C.The second medal is a HAND MADE (NOT cast or stamped and shows great hand working) Gold (solid 10K possibly 14K gold, not plate or rolled / weighs 7.5 grams) medal with an eagle ,crossed cannons & swords with cannon balls and great detail, it is engraved on its back Post 85 GAR to Wm. Holden 1896.The 3rd medal must have been his wifes bronze 1883 Woman's Relief Corps Guard medal. Also included is a photocopy of the William Holden family bible marriage/birth/death records pages (sorry the actual bible was sold before i figured out i had the medals!!).I don't know the lieutenant's civil war service details, but with the info provided i'm sure they would be easy to research. Thought somebody out there might like to know. Michael P. Pierce e: [email protected]
It has come to my attention that members of this list are sending message to other members with hurtful intent. We are all on this list to help each other with related question on Historical and genealogical research in Oswego. Going out of your way to hurt others with not be tolerated. YOU will be removed from the list. This list is for Historical or genealogical questions not personal chit chat. NYOSWEGO LIST Administrator Bonita Shafer personal and private Commits should be email to [email protected] not back to the list.
Aaron: Thanks for the great idea. Dorothy
The original point that was trying to be conveyed was; from your e-mail "IN BOX" there is nothing that identifies the message coming from NYOSWEGO-L. It is ONLY after you open the message that you see the NYOSWEGO-L. As stated before by others, all other news groups I belong to have the group name in the subject line on the 'In Box' screen. Example: [Peterhead]WEBSTERS in 1861 Census [WI-Sheboy]TOECKES living in Random Lake [ABERDEEN]1871 marriages in Longside 1848 I think we all would like to see the following when we first open our e-mail program. Mike, It does not bother me whether or not I know where an e-mail comes from. If it has an genealogy query in the title, I figure it is pretty safe. I have one question about your instructions-- <message rule which takes any message sent to [email protected] and moves them to a folder named "Oswego List"> Do you mean from rather than to? I am a rookie and would like to know how the computer knows this if the message does not identify itself as such. Thanks for any help in this matter. Liz, It is the To: field. The technical answer is an email contains required information. Each email has many fields but for this discussion we care about From: and To:. List software like that used by [email protected] will put the actual sender, in the case of this email it would be my email, in the From: field and will replace [email protected] into the To: field. Thats how you are able to just reply to a list email and the email goes to the list and not the original sender. It is slightly more technical than that but I have covered the essentials. That was a very good catch though. I was very frustrated with the message rules until I actually "looked" into the raw email message. Which contains more information than Outlook or whatever actually shows you. Hope that helps -- Mike Buell Fairport, NY > -----Original Message----- > From: liz Parmalee [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 3:34 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: Sorting list emails (was RE: VANT mailing list created) > > > Mike, It does not bother me whether or not I know where an > e-mail comes > from. I have had much luck over the years using the internet to try and find hitherto unconnected cousins with a particular surname by sending out letters to anyone with the intended last name after looking up the surname in superpages.com for an applicable town. For example, I recently sent about 24 letters to nearly all the Howards listed at superpages.com for the Fulton and Oswego localities in Oswego County, NY. I had my first response from a fifth cousin of mine (we grew up twenty years and all of seven miles apart) within 24 hours of sending out the letters. While I understand that this is not entirely different than something like telemarketing for relatives, I find that when I send a letter (as opposed to calling or emailing), people are excited to respond. I did the same for a more obtuse situation (the Evans family in Abergavenny, Wales), where everyone and their brother was an Evans. I had no confirmed "hits", but I had great connections made with people who actually weren't related or genealogists. One offer to do research by a non-related non-genealogist put me on a very productive path. Phone calls made to the residents of the house where my great-grandfather's family lived in the 1880s have enlightened me greatly about the house, the family, and Wales. I thought that I would post this technique here since I have never heard of its use before (perhaps it was more common before the days of the internet). Maybe others will have good luck with it! Aaron Howard son of David Thomas Howard, son of Donald Holbrook Howard, son of James Seth Howard, son of Samuel Preston Howard, son of Preston George Howard, son of Cyrus Howard, all who lived in Fulton, NY. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hello, I have been following this thread. But, has anyone tried using features in the email software to help identify list emails. Most email software has some way to identify, classify, highlight etc. an email. For example I use MS outlook on this computer. I have set up a message rule which takes any message sent to [email protected] and moves them into a folder named "Oswego List". I could easily have made the email line show up in my inbox in a different color or font. Outlook express has a similar but different mechanism, which I use at home to sort my wife and kids email from mine. I believe every other email program will have the same type of feature. Just look into the help file for something like "message rules", "highlight" or "classify". I just want to note that I'm not trying to admonish anyone. I am just trying to help out. And besides by doing a little experimenting you might end up with another tool to make your computer experience better. -- Mike Buell Fairport, NY > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 2:34 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: VANT mailing list created > > > Anna writes: > << I am new to this list and very confused by it as well. > The messages that > I get do not have the NYOSWEGO in the subject line. Anna writes: << I am new to this list and very confused by it as well. The messages that I get do not have the NYOSWEGO in the subject line. I use the the subject line to sort my messages, it makes it much easier to stay on many lists. At this point I am probably going to have to give up this list, due to the fact that it is too time consuming to go through the message and figure out where it came from. This is a great service and I am always happy to participate, it is just due to my other obligations that this is my consideration at this point. >> You might consider going to the digest format for this list rather than unsubscribing. The digests DO come with "NYOSWEGO-D Digest" in the subject line and in the email are the (generally) 1-10 emails of the day with a list of the topics in the digest first followed by the actual emails one after the other in order. It takes only a moment to read all the topics listed to see if you actually want to scroll down to read any of the messages. Blessings, Joanne (Virginia)

This is a setting the mail list moderator can make and it is fairly simple. I did it for the St. Lawrence mail list. I've come close to deleting some Oswego mail because there is no standard id for it. I don't know who the moderator is for Oswego but if he or she starts at rootsweb.com, then 'message boards' then 'board administrators' there are directions. I've always wondered why. I have ppprobably deleted many of them not even knowing they were from the Oswego list, since I don't like to open unknown messages. Whoever is responsible for this list should take some action to get that identification in the subject line as a courtesy to all of us. It is not dependent on one's email program or browser. I manage a bunch of lists and I do include the list name in the subject line, so people don't have to open each message to see the headers. However, I use an email program that does not automatically preview each message, so it's important to me to be able to tell the message's origin from the subject line alone. People who preview each message can tell more easily where it's from without needing the list name in the subject. It's a personal preference, and no matter how the list manager sets the options on Rootsweb, somebody is going to complain. DIdn't want to add to all this stuff coming in today, but I have AOL, and when I look up my Read listing, the first colum says TYPE - when it is from someone coming through the Oswego Mailing list, there is a symbol of an orange looking packing - that let's me know, regardless of the topic, that it is from Someone writing through the NYOSWEGO network. ALso, I have signed up to recieve the individual emails, plus the List. Perhaps people should recheck and see what they signed up to receive?? I enjoy reading all the comments, and keep looking for someone who is looking for any of my relatives - many thanks for reading, Carole Case Murphy way down in state of Texas...
We are getting a good education from this conversation. I think that's good. johnson
I am new to this list and very confused by it as well.
