I don't know how to get it off the net, but you might try the telephone. Look in the phone book for the nearest LDS church and ask for their Family History Center. I have found the people (generally volunteers) who work there to be extremely helpful to anyone who needs information and/or help. Leaves For all interested there is an article in today's (Oct.9,2003) Oswego Palladium Times paper on the "Poor House Journal". The reporter Debra Lupien Robilard did a good job. You may want to check this out. Also on an expedition to an antique and used things dealer here in town I found an album with Wallet size photos from the late 1800's of Lydia & Elizabeth Northrup Sister to Amelia Northup Forbes, along with Mary Forbes Smith and numerous other unidentified ones. Anyone interested I can give you the info of where to get them. Marilyn Rowsey Dirk VP Oswego County Genealogy Society. Researching : SHORTSLEEVE ELLIS, EMLAW, DAWSON ROWSEY
Good Morning, There have been a number of new items listed on the website for Sept and Oct, including the list of burials for the Nutting Cemetery, lots of photographs for various cemeteries, a number of biographies, obituaries, 1923 History of Richland, from 1834 Death-Marr. plus in Richland, 1911 Pulaski History, Records from 2 Congregational Churches, a Diary and much more. Lots of names listed throughout the histories as well. Laura OswegoNYGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/
What is available on the internet is just the smallest tip of the iceberg. The 1880 US census is online at familysearch.org along with the 1881 Canadian and British census. The film referenced is microfilm which you can read at the LDS family history center closest to you. If you cannot do that then you will need a volunteer or paid researcher to view the film and make copies. If you look up the local family history center address and phone number and give them a call to explain your situation, maybe they would order the film and make relevant copies for you at cost or for a donation of your choice. All the centers are volunteer run with generally very knowledgeable and helpful volunteers. Wouldn't hurt to ask. Also, you need not be Mormon - they help everyone. Also, you might consider re-posting your query listing the name of the person(s) you are researching and any relevant dates and places associated with them that you know or can make an educated guess for. This might generate better responses than the generic 'request help' subject line. LDS batches & sheets are what the person has submitted for LDS ordinances, and I have never seen that there is any useful information (like WHERE they got their information), nor any more than what is given in the IGI reference. If you want, you could order the film from your local branch Family History Library, and view the film there, but you will be out $4.50, and know no more than you what you now have. I use IGI listings to indicate that someone, sometime, somehow, actually did find out a date. Knowing that there is something somewhere makes the search easier. You can, however, know that an IGI Extracted Record (mentioned at the bottom of the listing), is taken from an actual public record, and thae film # for that record is listed. Good luck Mabry Benson

If you order a death certificate from a local office, be sure of the type of certificate you're going to get. It's going to cost $22, the new NYS fee, so you might as well get the most complete you can get. Local offices are permitted to give vital records information typed on a modern form. There are a few problems with this. 1. a simple typographical error, which can occur in any step of transcription 2. the use of a modern form, which does not have as many spaces for information as the original. If you order from the state, you will have a photocopy of the original. Please let me know if you'd like some help in searching the indexes and ordering a form. Don't write to the state health dept asking for the form. You'll have a six-month or more wait. Sherry, I would suggest going to the town involved for a death certificate for the 1880's. If there is a town clerk in the town you are interested in, try contacting the town clerk. Sharyn

Bonnie, Thank you for your offer of help with the Oswego Palladium newspaper. Someone has already been able to help me. Sharyn
I knew there was a source. Finally found it in my mess. http://www.google.com then type Oswego (NY) Newspaper Index 1820 - 1855+ When the list comes up, click on the top line and it will take you to this source. Go down a couple paragraphs and click on Search the Index. This is just "short" excerpts from the newspaper, but it might help someone that really wants to look way back. Dorothy
