The site always pops right up for me. Try this: start at www.google.com and search 'ny state newspaper project'. A link for the project will display. Click on the link from the google search and that should take you there. Do you use Microsoft IE (Internet Explorer) or Netscape. Most sites work best with IE. Also if your browser is not up to date, that might cause a problem. Near the top of your screen, click on 'help' then 'about internet explorer'. A screen of info will display and show the version of IE you are using. You should have 6.0 or higher. New versions are a free download - go to www.microsoft.com and search downloads then IE. Newspaper research is a blast and you may find stuff no one else will. I just wanted to send a list note about the Obituary Daily Times, which has a link at www.rootsweb.com ( or go to google.com, search 'obituary daily times' and then bookmark the link that displays. Some months ago, I started indexing obits from the Gouverneur Tribune Press. There is no copyright violation as the ODT (Obituary Daily Times) does not republish obits, they are simply making a reference to an obit (name, age at death, place of death, name of newspaper, date of newspaper and some optional fields (maiden name if any, nicknames, some other fields). If you volunteer, an ODT 'coach' will email you the upload program which will display a clickable icon on your desktop. This is a very straightforward form to allow keying in the obit reference. As you type, it will automatically make a surname all capital letters and will capitalize the first letter of a first name. The coach will review your obit submissions and advise if any errors for about six weeks (or maybe I was a slow learner!) and then you submit directly to a regional volunteer. As a volunteer, you will be subscribed to the ODT and receive a daily list of obit references. You also get the 'key' to the volunteer's names and email addresses. As a volunteer, you can request a full copy of an obit (for personal use only) which the submittor will email to you. You can also subscribe as a non-volunteer and see the obit references but you would have to contact the newspaper for a copy of the obit. Volunteers are asked to keep the full obit available for at least 3 months. I probably will keep the Gouverneur Tribune obits for a year. I have had a few requests to date for obits from the Gouverneur Tribune Press. I have made several requests for Sprague obits. If you subscribe to a small town paper you might consider volunteering for ODT. In the case of the Gouverneur paper, it is a weekly publication and there are generally just 5 - 10 obits. Keying them in and emailing to ODT generally takes me less than 20 minutes. While these are current obituaries (not from the 1800's) you may find some for people in their 80's or 90's that will fill in a missing link in your family history. The County packets contain all pre-1860 abstracted primary & secondary source records like Bible, Marriage, Ministerial,, Newspaper, Letters testamentary, wills, guardianships, notebooks, letters of admin., Baptismal,, deaths, cemetery, doctors and ministers day book records, to name most. The fact that ther are 48 conties in upstate NY with county packets and that thet straddle all the upstate migration routes, speaks for itself. You get any of the info abstracted from 1961 thru the current issue of "TREE TALKS". The price is determined by the quantity of data contained in the packet. I do not know of any other treasure like this covering one of our nations premiere migratory states. The balance of the packets are being indexed by a large group of volunteers and each index will appear at http//:www.rootsweb.com/~nycnygs so that you can make a more informed puchase decision, or take a chance that you will know you covered additional sources in the process! Bette, I believe her father's name is Roger Shutts Sr., and he still lives in Hannibal. He would be elderly, probably in his eighties. He had one son and at least three daughters. Does this connect with any one you have ? I'll ask my sister-in-law if she would like me to pursue this line further, so hold off on anymore names until I speak with her Dennis On Friday, November 14, 2003, at 03:42 PM, Marian Steward wrote: > > My grandmother, Eva Dell Shutts Palmer, did quite a bit of research > and gathering of information on her family line. Judy in Ocala, Florida > Researching Worden, Perry, Kennedy, Thorp, Lamb, Hill, Dumas and > Bothwell in Oswego County Judy : Are you researching KENNEDY family in Oswego County, New York? Would your Kennedy family line have any connection to James Kennedy and Mary Wood Kennedy from Ireland during the 1840's? They lived in Hannibal, Oswego County, NY. Mary Wood Kennedy died in 1891, and is buried in the Hannibal Village Cemetery. Their daughter, Mary Kennedy, was my great-grandmother. She was married to Gilbert Jonas Shutts. I have been concentrating on the SHUTTS line, but do have some info on the Kennedy line. I would be interested in contact with anyone else doing research with the Kennedy or Shutts lines. Bette in GA
I get the same thing with Outlook, but I find it to be a good thing. The first attachment contains the subject lines of all the others. If none are of interest, I can delete the entire thing without endless scrolling. (This is why topic specific subject lines are so important.) Or I can read individual attachments, delete those that don't interest me, and save only the ones that do. It is also easier to reply to a specific message, as it's the only thing on your screen, limits the amount of text copied from the original to just the topic at hand, and the subject line pertains to the topic, not just "NYOSWEGO-D Digest V03 #187." If I save a message in my mailbox for future reference, Outlook even lets me change the NYOSWEGO-D subject line to make it easier to remember why I saved it. Perhaps your email software has a similar feature; but even if it doesn't, your mailbox file size will stay much smaller if you keep only the posts of interest. If you subscribe to a lot of lists, it adds up. Since last week, all my List messages arrive as attachments and each one on the Digest form has to be brought up separately in order to view. Sorry to ask a computer problem but I have been unable to contact help at Netscape. Any suggestions? Thank you. Corinne ______________________________
Dianne & Corinne, << I use both netscape & explorer, and the digest form seems to come this way. I'm not sure if the digest lists have recently been set up that way, but that is the way I have been receiving my messages for several months now. You could elect to not have digest, but instead, receive the single mode of messages. Perhaps the list manager may respond to you message and give us all some insight. Sorry I couldn't be of any help, but wanted to let you know you are not alone. >> I also receive this list as a digest and there has been no change in the way my messages come. The only time I get them as an attachment is when their are lots of really long messages so that they won't fit into an email and then they all come as one document once they are downloaded.
