Good morning Russ, The newspapers at _www.fultonhistory.com_ (http://www.fultonhistory.com) site is exactly where I found information of family members, that I have been searching years for! It is exciting to read the articles of local interest and even better when a long lost relative is found! Before researching this newspaper site, I did not know the first name of my Aunt Mabel (Phillips) Stillwell's husband, who she married abt 1903. From various news articles, I learned his name was Hal Stillwell of Syracuse. Still searching for mention of first name of their daughter, who married Arthur J. Tessier. Articles have placed them living in Scriba Corners, New Haven and Syracuse, NY areas. Would like to learn if they had other children other than Hal John Tessier born 1941. Have found no mention as yet of when or where Mabel (Phillips) Stillwell died. I would be grateful for any help from list members who may have info of the Stillwell or Tessier families mentioned. Thank you. Julia (Phillips) Lewis
Hello, I am hoping someone on this list may have info of Arthur J. Tessier and wife, first name unk (Stillwell) Tessier. His wife's parents names were Hal and Mabel (Phillips) Stillwell. At one time they lived in New Haven, Scriba Corners, Syracuse area 1920-1960's. Arthur J. Tessier and wife had a son born abt 1940, named Hal John Tessier. I am related to Mabel (Phillips) Stillwell, who was born 1880 in Jefferson Co., NY. I would like to make a connection with Hal John Tessier or his children for exchange of family history! If you have any info of these families, I would very much appreciate a reply. Thank you. Julia
It's generally a good idea to include the surname(s) of interest in the subject line. If you go to www.usgenweb.org, click 'new york' then 'select a county' you can select Oswego and find possible leads there. From www.rootsweb.com 'message boards' you can connect with surname-specific message boards and post queries there. List as many dates and place as you can. For example - "This is where I lose the trail - my grandfather was ___________. He lived in _____________, NY and died _________. He married ___________ . As many specifics as you can list (without listing living relatives) can help others pick up the trail where you left off. I found two RAFKYs on Ancestry in the 1880 census -- Ferdernand b. 1814 Berlin and wife Vilemelia in Oswego and next door a john Rafky family. Believe it or not I taught at course at SUNY/Oswego in 1970! I guess I should have conducted this research while I was there - but alas, the idea hadn't occurred to me at that time! I am tracing my family history. As you can see, my name is David Rafky. In looking at immigration records from the late 1800s and early 1900s - I find the name Rafky -and more than one generation of the Rafky family- in Oswego. They seem to have been farmers. Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help. I live in England and I have done quite a lot of family history on the Elkins side of my family, which were from Westbury in Wiltshire. Where I need some help is with my Great Grandfather John Charles Elkins and his parents, my Great Great Grandparents Luke Elkins & Lucy Goddard. The 1881 England census shows John Charles Elkins was born in what looks like Rattila? (very hard to read), Oswego County, New York, 1877 and his older sister Harriet Mary Elkins in Mexico, Oswego, New York, 1876. After much detective work I found that John and Harriet's uncle (Luke's brother) Frank Elkins had emigrated to Mexico, Oswego in 1870 from Wiltshire, shortly followed by his wife Theresa the following year. I can't find a marriage record for Luke Elkins to Lucy Goddard anywhere in Wiltshire or bordering counties so they must have married whilst over in Oswego. I found a record for Luke Elkins on the Castle Garden website travelling over to New York with his sister-in-law Theresa (aforementioned) in 1871, and Lucy Goddard (spinster) in 1873 which also backs up this theory. I would very much like to know if my Great Great Grandparents were married whilst in Mexico, Oswego as it would complete part of the puzzle for me! I'd also like to know my Great Grandfather and h! is sister's birth place and date. Can anyone give me any advice how I would go about this? Are there any parish records available online? Would someone living in Oswego be able to help me? Any advice will be most appreciated, Thank you in advance, Sarah
Hi Sarah, Try www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html There are old newspapers on that site that might be of help. Also www.rootschat.com That site is located in England, but has a section on Emigrants to the United States. I have had a lot of help from those folks on searches for my English ancestors. Thanks Keith. That is good to know and might have been posted at the site and I overlooked it. I'll pass that on to the mail lists. Thank you for all your suggestions. I think my best chance is to connect with someone in a historical society who would do lookups. I would gladly go to the court house myself but I live too far away.

If possible you may want to view the copy at the court house. The 1892 census was almost impossible to read on the page my family was on, but at the court house I could read it fine and was able to get a good copy. -----Original Message----- From: PNUTREG@cs.com [mailto:PNUTREG@cs.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 8:24 AM To: NYOSWEGO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYOSWEGO] Re: 1865 census Hi One will find that many of these upstate NY old Census microfilms for many communities are difficult to read. It only means that the original was probably in poor shape (not well cared for) prior to it being microfilmed. I find many of the old Church Records are the same. Just have to keep going through them very slowly and hoping that what you are looking for is readable. Sometimes I even make a copy and have to take a Census Form and write in what I can read and keep that with my record or I also order the church records hoping they are more legible.
