Looking for information on John L. Devonshire, born in Buffalo, September 27, 1860, Died April 9, 1940 in Carlton, buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Medina. His wife was Clara Canfield, born in Weedsport about 1865 and died in Carlton, April 16, 1895. Buried in Waterport Cemetery, Carlton. They had 3 sons: Willie Devonshire, Born September 1, 1883 died, July 6, 1884. Buried in Waterport Cemetery, Carlton Orson Devonshire, Born April 24, 1885, Died November 17, 1885. Hi Maureen, This is Dee Robinson, Reference Librarian at Swan Library. I looked for and found an obituary for John. In the Orleans Republican ( here in Albion) Wednesday, April 10, 1940, under the column "Deaths" "John Devonshire. John Devonshire, who lived alone at Ashwood, was found dead yesterday morning at his home. He was about 80 years old. The body has been brought to Merrill's Funeral Home, where the funeral will take place Friday at 10 a.m." He is the only one I found an obit for. By looking at the Orleans County census records at the Orleans County Genweb site, I found what you probably have already found that: John was the son of John and Catherine. The father was a blacksmith and John L. was also a blacksmith listed in the 1880 and 1892 census. In the 1900 census for Town of Shelby, Village of Medina, it lists John Devonshire as blacksmith and living with him was Leon age 8. I haven't been able to find any trace of Leon after that. It also indicates in this census that John was age 67, born Vt. and that his parents were born in France. Sorry, I wish I could help you more.
