    1. [NYORLEAN] advice needed - GLIDDEN and DAVIS names
    2. Laura Gould
    3. Hello, I need advice on how to find the first name of a Davis woman who was born about 1809 and married Jehiel Glidden about 1826 in Clarendon, Orleans County, New York. She died, or they divorced in 1828. Her child's name was Oliver Davis Glidden born 1828. Do church records go back that far? If so, what would be the Methodist church for Clarendon? Is there a resource for looking up Clarendon cemetery records? Any advice on how to research Clarendon, New York from Michigan would be great. I can give more details on my search if anyone loves a good mystery. The above is just the tip of the iceberg. :-) Thanks, Laura

    3. Hi Laura, This is Dee Robinson, Reference Librarian at Swan Library in Albion, NY. I see in your email that you are looking for Methodist Chruch records, perhaps this is leading you in the wrong direction. In "Landmarks of Orleans County, NY" by Judge Isaac Signor 1894, P588 he states: "The Second Free Will Baptist Church.- At an early day a Free Will Baptist Church was formed at East Clarendon. April 7, 1846, a society of this denomination was organized in the southwestern part of the town, and in 1850 the earlier organization was absorbed by it. Until 1859 the place of worship was the school house in district No. 10, but in that year it was changed to No. 4. This society has never built a house of worship. The first deacons were Jehiel Glidden, and John Hawley. The first clerk and treasurer was Chester Hawley. The pastors have boon: Revs. Archibald Bennett, A. Gilman, William Peck, Charles Cook, Shubel S. Stevens, Walter Holt, Alfred Olmstead, and D. L. M. Rollin." Because there are no definite dates on the pastors I may be leading you astray myself. But I thought it was worth a look. This book is online at Heritage Quest. If you have access go to BOOKS and simply search for Glidden, Jehiel, you will bring up the Landmarks of Orleans County book. Hope this is helpful.
