The Western New York Genealogical Society would like to invite you to join us for our upcoming free program on Saturday, November 16th in Buffalo, New York. * Using DNA to Explore Your Ancestry with Dr. Blaine Bettinger* Saturday, November 16, 2013 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Open to the Public. Free to Attend. No registration required. Event Location: Mason O. Damon Auditorium Buffalo & Erie County Public Library - Central Branch 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo, NY 14203 With the growing popularity of genetic genealogy testing services such as 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and Family Tree DNA comes an increasing number of questions for researchers. Join us as nationally recognized scientist, lawyer, and blogger Dr. Blaine T. Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D. discusses the use of the DNA technology in genealogy. In his talk, Dr. Bettinger will explain autosomal DNA testing, the newest type of testing used to explore ancestry. Rather than simply testing one line like Y-DNA or mtDNA tests, autosomal tests provide a more complete picture of an individual’s ancestors. Autosomal DNA testing can be used to find long-lost genetic cousins, reveal ethnic roots, and even explore a person’s health. Together, we’ll examine the science of autosomal DNA and how best to use this new tool in genealogy research. ____________________________________ An avid genealogist, Blaine T. Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D. is an intellectual property and technology attorney at the firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King. He obtained a Ph.D. from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse where his research was in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and molecular biology. Dr. Bettinger has extensive experience with the many ethical, legal and social implications and issues associated with personal genomics. He is a former editor of the Journal of Genetic Genealogy and the author of The Genetic Genealogist [http://www.thegeneticgenealogist.com], a leading blog in the area of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. We hope to see you there. Visit the WNYGS website at http://www.wnygs.org/meeting-2013-11.html to download a copy of the program flyer.

Hi, This is Dee Robinson, Reference Librarian at Hoag Library in Albion, NY. I can give you a brief overview of some of the highlights. We have a local history/genealogy room and an archives. The local history room has books on local history as well as publications on genealogy from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Mayflower Families, The Barbour Collection (1-55), published books of Vital Statistics of several states in New England to 1850, as well as Vital Records for communities in New York State. We also have a collection of Oral Histories that the local Historical Association completed in the 1970s. The local history room has local newspapers on microfilm from 1824 to present and some vital records from local churches. Within the library we have access to Ancestry and patrons have access at home with a library card to Heritage Quest Online. I hope this gives you at least a feel for what we have. Please forgive any multiple postings you may receive; I will be posting to various New York County lists. I would like to learn of any organization, in this county, that considers itself to have a genealogical function. Genealogical function may include, but is not limited to,genealogical societies, lineage societies, historical societies, libraries with local history and genealogical collections, archives, and family societies. If you know of a resource or repository, or if you are a member of, or aware of, an organization in your locality, or another New York locality, please respond to this request. I am requesting the information for both my individual research and to share with members of the New York State Council of Genealogical Organizations (NYSCOGO). NYSCOGO will be finding ways to share this information with fellow New York State researchers. Please know that I am aware I can Google (smile), I would like to know your experience and your suggestions. Thank you in advance for any information you provide.
Hello Everyone, I will be teaching a short "class" (approximately 45 mins. - 1 hr.) at Lee-Whedon Library in Medina at 2:00pm on August 8th (this Thursday). The program is free to the public, compliments of the library. In the past, I've gone over an hour and the subject could warrant many more hours, so I will be available after the program to answer any and all questions. I will have some handouts available to those in attendance. The program will focus mainly on using church records to trace Polish families back into Europe. Most importantly, bring your own Polish genealogy and questions and I can provide you with help and assistance relating to your own specific families. If you are unable to make it, send me an e-mail and I can forward you materials from the program. As always, I am always happy and willing to help researchers online with questions relating to Polish genealogy. Hope to see you there! Matt Ballard Matthew R. Hi folks, The newly opened HOAG library in Albion is working on having their microfilmed newspapers digitized and put online. At a meeting last night I suggested they contact the man who maintains fultonhistory.com and invited the library staff to our meeting coming up so they can see for themselves how wonderful that site is.
