    3. Can anyone out there help this gentleman? His name is Allen Dise and his email is [email protected] I am seeking any photos or other biographical information regarding Benjamin Franklin Gates (1801-1881, born in Ontario County, N.Y.) and any photos of his home or his tannery in the town of Barre, Orleans County, N.Y. I am the current owner of the property and am trying to assemble a history. In various sources, Mr. Gates is referred to as B.F., Benjamin F., B. Franklin, and Frank. Benjamin Franklin Gates was a resident of the village of Albion, Orleans County, N.Y. at the time of his death. William H. Gates (relation to B. F. Gates not known), born about 1817 in Ontario County, N.Y., owned and operated the tannery in the 1850s and 1860s, and I am seeking photos/information about him as well. Thanks. Allen Dise

    1. [NYORLEAN] Query about the Orleans Co COLEMANS
    2. Casey Gilliam-Zgonc
    3. My great grandfather George COLEMAN [b. 1866 d. 1941] and his family are from the Ridgeway, Medina, and Tonawanda towns. My gg grandfather was William COLEMAN [b. 1827 England d. 1888]. William was married to Mary DILL [b. 1834 d. 1913] from Scotland. They had 4 or 5 children [one died, I think] named James COLEMAN [m. Matilda Wienerd], Harry E COLEMAN [b. 1876 d. 1929], and Benjamin COLEMAN [m. Hattie Wilson from Ontario]. They were longtime residents of Orleans County. George, James, and Matilda are all buried at Boxwood cemetery. I know that George and James were involved with a funeral home business and was "manager" [per census] of a cemetery. It could have been Boxwood since they are buried there and probably would have had free plots. Just a guess. The rest of the family is buried at West Ridgeway cemetery. I would like to know if there are any relatives out there or anyone who knows any oral history about the funeral or cemeteries in the area or anyone who has pictures. I would love to talk to you! ~ Casey C. Sodus was in Ontario County in 1800 and the county line was the same but it was Cayuga Co. Sodus was in Ontario Co. in 1790 and the county line was the same but it was Montgomery county east of the line. Bob

    3. Hi Jean, This is Dee Robinson, I am Historian for the Town of Gaines on the other side of Rochester. I suggest you check out the Wayne County genweb site, it shows a map of some of the towns and their history before 1823 http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywayne/ . At that time I believe the County was Ontario. Hope this helps. Dee Jean Maris wrote: >Can anyone tell me which county was Sodus Bay a part of in June 1820. Today I added the first 6 town histories to my web site for Orleans County, NY. The towns of Barre, Carlton, Claredon, Gaines, Kendall and Murray were added. These are shorter than what I have online for the other Western New York Counties but still have a lot of good information about the early settlers. Like all my history files for New York they may be found at this link: http://history.rays-place.com/ny/index.htm Other recient additions for New York State to my web site. Herkimer County The towns of Frankfort, Litchfield, Norway, Russia and Schuyler. Lewis County The town of Watson. Montgomery County The towns of Amsterdam, Charleston, Glen and St. Johnsville. Oneida County The towns of Deerfield, Florence, Marci, Marshall, Trenton and Verona. And the completion of 651 biographies for Jefferson County. 3. Can anyone tell me which county was Sodus Bay a part of in June 1820. It became part of Wayne Co. in Apr. 1823. A great grandfather of mine Nathan Sherman died in Sodus Bay on June 5, 1820. I don't know where he was buried or what county that was in at that time. Please help.
