The recent post about Patrick BARBER born in County Longford Ireland and buried in Goodwill Presbyterian Church peaked my interest. Does anyone on the list know of other old families that came from County Longford? I believe these early settlers often migrated in groups. I've looked for years for the origins of my ancestor John HARRIS (b. 1748- d. 8 Mar. 1825), who is buried in Goodwill Presbyterian church with wife, Abigail ?. John was a member of the Ulster militia, as indicated by his tombstone. For several years, I've been trying to discover John's parents, and place of birth, migration patterns etc. One challenge is solving a problem of identity: there are several "John Harrises" in Orange Co. (BTW, here may be a link to the George HARRIS family of New Windsor.) I found a clue in "The First 150 years of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, NY" by James Milligan Dickson, pub. 1880 . There is a footnote on page 76, indicating the Harris family of Montgomery descended from George Harris of 1657, who came from Southampton. Others who came from Southampton included the HOWELL family of East Coldenham, the WOODRUFF family, the HAINES, TOPPING and the GOODALE families. <<<<"From Southampton, too, but later in the century, came the progenitors of the HOWELL family at E. Coldenham and elsewhere throughout the county. They are descended from Edward Howell, who came to Southampton from Boston in 1640. Also the HARRIS family, descended from George Harris of 1657; the Woodruff family, descended from John WOODRUFF of 1657; the TOPPING family, descended from Thomas topping of Milford, 1639, and the GOODALE family, descended from Joseph Goodale of 1698." >>>>> I have a lot of professionally-researched material on the Harris line but have never smashed the brick wall regarding John's parents.
