My greatgrandmother, Julia FAY, listed Newburgh as her place of birth on her marriage certificate. She was born on 1 Feb 1883, the daughter of James FAY and Julia KEARNEY [information drawn from her marriage and death certificates]. Her mother supposedly died in childbirth. I have contacted the clerks of both the City of Newburgh and the Town of Newburgh, and neither can find record of either this birth or death. Julia was orphaned at an early age and worked at an inn or restaurant owned by relatives. At some point, visitors at the inn "adopted" her and brought her in NYC, where she later married Michael Cleary and died in 1961. Any information or hints on what to do next would be greatly appreciated. I suppose writing to the Catholic churches in the area to search for baptism or burial records would be the next step. As I live in California, I can't search the records in person. I would love to hear from any Fays or Kearneys in the area who might be able to help. My grandmother (Julia's daughter) always said she was seventh generation American, which might mean one of the two sides had been in the area a long time. Should I extend my search to other towns near Newburgh? Thanks in advance! Julianne
