The Town of Wawayanda was not formed until 1849 from the Town of Minisink. Prior to that it was the Precinct of Goshen. I have come across an assessment role which indicates that persons who seem to have resided with or close to my family were assessed in District 10 in the late 1700s. I have also found the same names on the 1775 Assessment List for the "Town of Waywayanda." I have also found in notes supplied me that Waywayanda was carved out of the early, large "Minisink" village or area, as were a couple of other locales, including Wantage, I think. I have a Benjamin Parse or Pearce, with a wife Sarah, who bought land in 1783; and she died in 1788. There is an odd record of he and she buying and selling a parcel in 1790, but it may be that he simply sold it. He was not the Jonathan Pearce who died at the Battle of Minisink with Abraham Shepard. I think there is something conflicting over the identity of that person; I can't link him to anyone. The only other Jonathan Pearce, other than Willis' teen brother, was one married to Blandina Terwilliger, but he seemed to survive the Revolution and the fighting and died later. Anyway, curious if there is a correlation of District 10 for tax purposes back then to the border area near Clove Church and Waywayanda and Wantage, if anyone knows offhand.
