Dear Julia, Wow thank you for all the information.  I will have to take time to digest that.  I did get some information that Jarvis and his son (my great great grandfather) Frank Purdy lived in Fair Oaks.  I guess that would mean their address was Wallkill/Middletown, not the Village of Wallkill.  I do know that Jarvis was a carpenter and his son Frank was a blacksmith in Fair Oaks.  I also know that Frank owned over 120 acres and about 100 acres of that was sold so a Golf Course could be put in.  I think that is the one that is on Sands Road in Fair Oaks called Wallkill Golf Course.  Most of my life I was told the family was from Middletown, NY.  The Regent of the DAR where I live went to Washington DC to the DAR Library and did find Fannie Pudy (my great grandmother) in a book called "Wallkill Orange County Book of Births 1880-1913".  It had her date of birth, place of birth and parents.  I am hoping that the National Archives in Philadephia will also have this book which would record my Grandmother, Fannie's daughter, Jennie Ogden born in 1902.  I know that book would not have Louisa Comfort Purdy in it.  Since I have two years to get my information back to the DAR, I will send for the longer wait information.  Thank you so much for your time, it has been a very interesting and enjoyable journey back in time and it's not over yet. I hope I may call on you if I need additional information. I included other Comforts and Purdys married and baptized in or by Bloomingburg ME ministers. If you are interested, I'll look them up again. I figured you got the Census info on your own. As Ms Van Buren points out, Bloomingburg, T/Mamkating, Sullivan, NY is where the village is located. At this point, the Shawangunkill (pronounced "Shawn-gum-kill" like the ridge nearby) marks the border. HOWEVER, the postal zone that the Bloomingburg post office covers overlaps into Orange County. So someone may have a mailing address of Bloomingburg, but live in the T/Walkill in Orange County. I think the census went by the mailing zones. A quick check on MapQuest for Bloomingburg will illustrate this you. Louisa & Jarvis' cemetery is immediately across the river in the T/Wallkill, Orange County. They are in the Sherer Tract of the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery, Inc. I have the name and number of the chair of the cemetery board if you want to check whether or not the burial records have Louisa's parents listed. Fingers crossed! And did you mean the T/Wallkill, Orange County, NY or the VILLAGE of Wallkill, Ulster County, NY? Although it's true in general that that NYS didn't codify collection of birth, marriage, or death certificates prior to 1880, some diligent town clerks collected them anyway. Or like T/Wawarsing, Ulster, NY, they were legally collected around 1850 for about 2 years (maybe other Ulster County places? don't know). And even after 1880, many who were mandated to record vital records just didn't until NYS began cracking down in the early 1900s. Anything to thwart a descendant family historian!!! I remember a library in NYS volunteered to look up VR numbers from microfiche for people who wanted to buy the VRs themselves. Maybe they still do. If you buy a VR from the NYS Department of Health in Albany, NY, you'll get a copy of the actual document, though the wait will be 5-6 months. If you pay the same $22 amount to the town clerk, the wait will be much shorter, but you'll recieve only a synopsis of the info that's on the certificate. The clerks kept logs of the SOME of the info and forward the original to the DOH. Your choice, time verses amount of info. One birth document I got from a Westchester County town clerk didn't even have the hospital or parents name on it. I was 8-1/2 inches wide by 3+ inches long - that's it! They fit 3 per sheet of paper. Newspaper microfilms are at the Thrall Library in Middletown, NY. Several of us live not too far away.
