    1. [NYORANGE] Where is Slatterlytown or Slatterytown NY?

    3. I'm trying to find where Slatterlytown/Slatterytown is, or was. My husband's gr grandparents were married by a Rev. Mr. Buck at the Slatter(l)ytown or Methodist Church and we can't find any reference to a place. This information was mentioned by the widow during a hearing for her application for a widow's pension based on her husband's civil war service. The marriage took place around 1849-50 so it may have been incorporated into another town. All the documentation we have has them living in Orange County, in and around the Middletown area and I don't think they would have gone very far from there. Thanks for any help. Jackie

    3. I checked "Gazetteer of the state of New York" by John Homer French at GoogleBooks without any luck. It's a go-to gazateer for NYS - the Orange County Genealogical Society sells a re-print. (There are extensive indexes available for French's also.) Just because there's no mention in French's doesn't mean this place didn't exist - wherever there was an intersection with more than one house, it was given a name - usually that of one of the residents - "Pilgrim's Corners", near Middletown, for example. These spots are frequently known only to those in the immediate area and changed over time. Maybe somebody will recognize the place or know of a likely church. --- On Mon, 6/14/10, Jackie <celticsearch@comcast.net> wrote: ...trying to find where Slatterlytown/Slatterytown... Jackie

    3. There was a Satterly Methodist Church in the Bloomingrove/Monroe area according to Ruttenber & Clark's History of Orange County. I wonder if this could be the church you're looking for. 3. Satterlytown is located in the southern section of Blooming Grove - just north of the Monroe border. It was a very small area but did have a Methodist or ME Church at the time - that has now gone - there still is a cemetery which is at the corner of Peddlar Hill Rd and Rt 208. The cemetary was originally on the right hand of the road but I believe during the 1950's the road was moved and now goes straight through the cemetery splitting it in half. Presently there is care of the lower section of the cemetery - but there are old stones in the upper section also. Watch out for groundhog holes.
