Hello all, I was expecting the 1775 Orange Co. Assessment Roll to show up in the newsletter days ago, but apparently it was too large. Thanks to the hard work of JosÈ Rivera Nieves who is webmaster of the Orange Co. site, the Roll is available to all there. He has it nicely arranged into a group of pages, and you won't have to look at the ragged columns of data you would have seen in an e-mail. It's also considerably more permanent this way and can be accessed for additional study any time you wish. What you will find is the alphabetized version with last name first. I think that will make it much easier to spot your ancestor. Following the name, you will find the district and page numbers. These tell you where you will find the actual listing in Ruttenber & Clark. On the first of the pages is a description of the ten assessment districts so you will know approximately where they are. I do wish it were possible to draw an overlay on an Orange Co. map giving exact locations, but Ruttenber & Clark makes it clear this is not possible. So, we have to make do with the descriptions they provided us. I'm thankful for this much information as it does suggest a connection between my known 5xGGF, Samuel Knapp and the unknown Samuel Cornell who lived in District 8 of western Warwick. They were surely near neighbors, and I think that is the primary value of this assessment roll. Please go take a look at José's and my hard work. I hope it helps you. Best wishes, Tom Cornell Web Site: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorange/assessment_01.htm>
