Hi Orange Co. List: In response to a couple of the questions about J. H. French's "Gazetteer of the State of New York, 1860", it is a, reading from the title page, "A Comprehensive View of the Geography, Geology, and General History of the State, and A Complete History and Description of Every County, City, Town, Village and Locality, with full tables of statistics" . It was originally published in 1860 and then re-reprinted with an index of names in 1983. It is organized by county and gives the earliest information about each county, whether it was one of the original ones, whether it was taken from another county, etc. It gives the names of the earliest inhabitants of each area, what the topgraphy was like, what the businesses were, etc. It has wonderful footnotes and, personally, I think it's one of the most valuable tools we have for research in NY prior to the Civil War. Please email me with any questions you may have, Regards, Marilyn Stern, (living in Austin, TX; but a native of Ulster Co., NY)
