    2. Hi Barbara, In the early nineteenth century, the term "Canada West" referred to the English settlements west of New France (the early Franch settlements in today's Province of Quebec). The exact boundaries of this jurisdiction changed several times over that century. Most of the settlements were along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River and the north shore of Lake Ontario in today's Province of Ontario. Many American colonists who wished to maintain their ties to England came to this area after the American Revolutionary War, where they became known as the Loyalists. Some of the earliest settlements were at Newark (today's Niagara-on-the-Lake), York (today's Toronto) and Kingston.
