    1. Noah or Adam?
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. Dan Burrows: I woke up this morning with that Noah-vs-Adam-or-Adah Carpenter on my mind (from the Case Cemetery stone). Although I wrote yesterday that I was "confident" the name is NOT Noah, I suddenly have doubts. The stone inscription is in upper-case letters, so it's possible the top of the left upright of an "N" might look like an "A," and the right-side upright of an "N" might be worn away. Also, a weather-worn "D" and an "O" might look similar. So I suddenly find I can talk myself into "NOAH" even though at the time I was really confident it was ADA(M?) or ADA(H?). There's also a question as to the year. My reading of the stone was that the death was 1817. Your info from Coleman has it 1847. Aside from my possibly mis-reading the stone, it's also possible (one supposes) that Mr. Coleman mis-read something in his transcription. (Do you know what dox he was working from?) Or maybe Adam is there separatelt, with an unreadable stone, and Adah was his wife! (Seems unlikely, as the dates are too coincidental.) Also, checking my volume of Amos Bugbee Carpenter's Carpenter Memorial, I find a Noah Carpenter (#852) said to have died in Homer NY (where's that?), in March 1847!!! Carpenter Memorial also has a Noah Carpenter (#2335) said to be born in Orange County...but wrong dates to be this Case Cemetery preson. CM sometimes gets individuals mixed up, so there is some (SOME) possibility our Noah is one of these Noahs...if it's a Noah at all! I'd really like to know what that stone says; name and date. Might you be able to go take a new look at the stone sometime? It's at the rear of the lot, leaning against a tree. It's not hard to get to now, as I've whacked away lots of brush, and the leaves aren't out yet. Robin
