Dear Researchers, I have been trying to understand the Thompson families that are in this area in the 1700-1800s for several years. I believe that there are at least two distinct family lines, but I also believe that it is quite possible that they are interrelated or intertwined by marriage, etc. 1. Does anyone know if a definitive work as have done to sort them out? If so, where could I find it. 2. Does anyone know if the Judge William Thompson (1700s) is descended from the Blacksmith Wm Thompson whom according to early deeds was given property as an incentive to settle in Orange co. in, say, the 1720s, by the town fathers? My particular interest is in the James Thompson who was the father of Mary Thompson (d. 1788) who married John Wisner, Jr. From other works, I know that the "other" Thompson family members also married into the Wisner-Post line. I am currently transcribing letter written by Dr. J.H. Thompson in 1895 who had married Adaline Post who was a desc. of the John Wisner, just mentioned. In his letters he mentions something to the effect that so far as he knows he is not related to the Thompsons who are of the the Wisner family.
