    3. I've been wanting to inquire about "Drowned Lands". Does this refer to swampy areas that were drained, leaving the rich soil needed to grow onions? When was this done? You can see below that they are referred to as drowned lands in the 18th century - was that before they were drained, but the people could see the potential in them? A name like "Pellett's Island", when there is no body of water - was this just some high ground in the midst of a swamp? Is there a geologist out there who can explain this part of Orange County - was it somehow a result of glacial action? Incidentally there is a recent book out on Wayawanda with lots of good info and photos.
