Hi all! I got a lot more responses than I anticipated about Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church. From the broad range of questions, I realized it would be helpful to let you know the nature of the history I have, and a bit about the church itself. Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church is not the original name of our congregation. It was formed in 1854 when a small group splintered off of First Presbyterian. Initially, the name was Second Presbyterian; the name was changed to Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1906. Webb Horton (1826-1908) had been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was the son of Isaac and Prudence (Knapp) Horton. In 1855, he married Elizabeth Ann Radeker of Montgomery. When first married, they lived in Narrowsburg (Sullivan Co.). Their residence changed once or twice, but they ended up in Middletown in 1868, and Mrs. Horton joined Second Presbyterian in 1874. Following his father's death, Eugene Horton had planned to build a huge mausoleum at Hillside Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Wight eventually persuaded him to use his financial where-with-all to support the church instead. When Eugene's sister, Carrie, also died in 1910. In 1911, Eugene Horton agreed to provide an endowment to help build a new church. The congregation applied for the name change to Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1912. The Centennial History of Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church is a narrative description of the evolution of the congregation. It is indexed, but the names included only the leadership of the congregation: ministers, session members (elders and deacons), and prominent families who played a significant role in the life of the congregation. This volume does not include baptism, marriage or general membership rosters... Questions regarding early baptisms and marriages probably need to be referred to the Presbytery. I believe that archival records are kept someplace central. Hope the clarification and background help a little bit. Lisa Stitt
