Are you there, Mike GREATOREX? I copied & saved your message, but didn't copy your e-dress or even what list I saw you on. I searched tonight for Lillian in Florida census records 1935 & 1945 (the next earlier is 1885). No likely suspect, I'm afraid, for Lil* GREATOREX, Lil* BEARD, Lil* PHILLIPS, or Lil* MACOMBER. I looked for John GREATOREX in the FL census, also, without luck. Do you have access to US Federal Censuses, 1920 & 1930? Perhaps one or the other will pop up there. Do you have access to UK Censuses? UK vital records? British military records? I found some for a John Henry, what since it seems to be a whole file. Didn't read them, though. What about passenger manifests? I saw tons of US & UK censuses for GREATOREX, along with military records for others of the name, numerous vital records, etc. Would any of these other kinds of documents help you or do you already have them? I found this Social Security Death Index record that's close, but not the same as the 1 Feb 1889 DoB you sent me: Name: Lillian I. Hello List, I am trying to trace the descendents of two brothers, Henry born 1852, and John born 1854, both in Yorkshire, England. I believe they went to America, probably in the early 1880s and settled in New Jersey. Any information about them and their descendents would be of great interest for me. Hi All Looking for any connections to Wilmot Clark, b. 1797, NY married Mary E. (Polly) VAN AUKEN He shows up in 1830, 1850, 1870 in Sullivan County, Highland/Lumberland and lived on Clark Road, near Blind Pond in what is now the town of Eldred. He does show up 1840 Census, Deer Park, Orange Co., NY, page 214, line 24: Wilmott (Wilmot) Clark which leads me to believe he may have had relatives there or lived there during that census. Ian, this is a bit weird meeting up on the Orange Co List. I have Woodcock in my tree from Darfield, Yorks. Could my Ann Woodcock be part of your family. I have Ann Woodcock marrying my William Greatorex on Xmas Day 1854. Per the marriage certificate I have the father of Ann as George Woodcock occ Labourer of Darfield. One of the witness's was a William Woodcock. The oldest child of this marriage, George Greatorex born 1856 Ridgeway by Eckington Derbyshire emigrated to the US and settled in Highland Falls, Orange Co, NY. Thats why I suscribe to this list. Fyi: New Jersey is not in Orange Co which is part of NY State. What evidence do u have for a New Jersey connection? I have p. 148 of the First Census of the U.S., Orange County. Evidently this was 1790. I have a Catherine Decker m. Simon Jacob. A Jeremiah Decker lived near this couple in the 1820 census of Whitewater Twp., Franklin Co., IN. Trying to determine if he is her father. She was born 21 Aug. 1783. In this enumeration, Jeremiah is listed under Warwick Town. Above him are John Blain, Thomas Vanderhoof, Thomas Oakley and Wm. Bush. Below him are William Green, Daniel Burr, George Nannay and James Keeler. There are other Deckers scattered round about. Jeremiah is the only free white male over 16. There are four males under 16 and two females of any age. I take this to be a wife and a daughter (perhaps Catherine). Can anyone provide any information on this family, where they might have been located and who the other children may be. I am not certain this is Catherine but it might be. An Abijah Decker (b. 1791-94) m. Catherine's sister-in-law, Martintje Jacobus as well; he was a veteran of the War of 1812. There are conflicting accounts as to whether he enlisted in Orange Co., or Ontario Co. It also seems as if Biblical names were used in this Decker family and wondering if there are any likely records for the first four males as Abijah may have been in this family but born after this census. Jeremiah likely moved to the Lakes in the migration around 1800-1804. Thank you for any assistance. Sharon Pearce, sharpearce@yahoo.com The World has chosen Peace. Time heals confusion!
Robin, I have posted my Pearce family charts on Ancestry.com as William Willis Pearce + Jacobus, Avery, Vanpelt. I continue to revise it. My only thought about the following Mary Pierce, is that she might be my ggg grandmother Mary Shepard Pearce who was granting away land that she inherited out of her father, Abraham Shepard,'s estate but it is highly unlikely. This couple and others went with George Oldfield, to whom her sister was married, to Lake Keuka by 1804-5. Sharon Pearce, sharpearce@yahoo.com The World has chosen Peace. I have not seen Orange County references to any other Mary Peirce (or Pierce) in that era, so it is quite plausible your 1806 grantee is the same person. I don't know what became of her. Folks I am looking for John W. Wood and his younger brother Robert J. Wood born 3 years later according to the 1870 Census that lists the parents Andrew and Julia Ann (nee ?) Wood. I located these two brothers and 2 sisters (Deborah and Charlotte) in the census which lists them in Tarrytownship, Mount Pleasant 1837 and Sleepy Hollow in 1850, Westchester County. I found them again with in NYC probably Manhattan in the 1870 census with an additional sister Gertrude age 17. I have not found the parents in the 1880 census but think that maybe a clue of John W. married in Orange County to Eliza. John gives his age as 37 and Eliza is 40 no children were found if this is my second great grandfather's siblings. Bye the bye James Andrew is the oldest of this brood and I have tracked him from birth area to burial in Rye, Westchester County in his wife's family plot at Greenwood-Union. I am hoping that someone in Orange county lists can point me to more info on John W. Wood or his wife Eliza so that I can at least confirm or jettison this family from my research. All that I have to go on is the middle initial and the correct birth year for 3 different census enumerations. Daniel
Someone from the Dutchess list asked recently about pre-1790 censuses. I found some, AND THE SAME IS TRUE for other Hudson River and Mohawk River valley counties, too. In the 4 volume 'The Documentary History of the State of New-York', these censuses are available for Dutchess, but other counties and areas have similar censuses and lists: v1 Dutchess County: names of militia officers 363 inhabitants in 1714 368, 691 in 1723 693 in 1731 and '37 694 in 1746 and '49 695 in 1756 696 in 1771 697 v2 Population in 1770 of the country between Rensselaer's and Livingston's manors 965 v3 Claverack census 1714 905 names of some early Dutch immigrants 52 Livingston Manor - a number of reports are in this volume v4 Dutchess County census 1738 184 names of officers and solidiers of the militia in 1738 freeholders in 1740 205 This document is available on CD with added incentives at: http://www.hopefarm.com/leedisk2.htm http://genealogycds.com/sales/DocHistNY.htm http://www.kinshipny.com/kincd.htm or FREE at GoogleBooks (search the title - there are multiple copies available of a few of the volumes). Hi all: First, I apologize for the cross-posting, but I would just like to make sure that as many people as possible see this. After visiting the Yonkers Public Library for a few weeks, I have created an index of obituaries published in January through March of 1950. The index is comprised of 578 names, and lists a person's maiden name, if applicable, date of death, date of publication, location of death, as well as any interesting notes. Please note that this is an index to obituaries only; if a person only had a death notice, they are not included in the index. I will be happy to do look-ups for anyone who might believe that a relative died during this period; just e-Mail me as much information as you have and I will take a look. Please e-Mail me off-list at yonkers.genealogy@gmail.com, as to not clog up the list. I hope this information will benefit someone and I hope to continue this indexing project in the very near future. Bryan Healy

A lady wrote "What county is the Wallkill Valley Cemetery in, Ulster or Orange?" The Find A Grave system gives us "Walden Orange County New York USA". If you go to the Find A Grave home page at http://www.findagrave.com and click on "Search for a Cemetery" and plug in the name of any cemetery and select a state and you'll see all cemeteries in the findagrave.com system with that name in that state. Don't select a country or state and you will see all with that name (in the Find A Grave system) in the world . Once you display the cemetery, its location normally includes the state and county and frequently more exact location, depending on what the volunteer put it. Some have explicit directions how to find them by road, some have GPS coordinates, and some have maps. If you're pretty sure a cemetery exists by a given name in a given state but it isn't displayed, that could merely mean that nobody has put it online yet. The findagrave.com system has over 30 million gravestone listings and many, many thousands of photographs of tombstones. The above shows how to search for a cemetery. To search for a person, go to the home page and click on "Search 30 million grave records" and plug in the person's name and select a state. If found, you might get lucky and see a photgraph of the tombstone (if the volunteer included one). All entries in the findagrave.com are made by volunteers, so many listings are incomplete. It is growing >very< rapidly...over 800,000 new memorials in the past month alone. Tens of thousands of people use the system every day. It's a wonderful, very dynamic system with great potential. We just need more volunteers to add known info which is not already online. To become a volunteer, go to their home page at http://www.findagrave.com/ and click on "Join the Find A Grave Community". I hope this helps others locate cemeteries and graves in the United States. There is no fee to attend; light refreshments are available. Margaret Kaiser GSBC Program Chair? Historian Firth Fabend presents a brief overview of the Dutch people who settled in the Hudson Valley in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. She illustrates her talk with eighty slides, in forty pairs for purposes of comparison. She asks, Who were these Dutch people who replanted themselves in the Hudson Valley when it was a wolf-infested wilderness?? Why did they come to America? What did they do when they got here? And why is their cultural influence still felt in the area today? She touches upon the fur trade, slavery, the patroon system of land tenure vs. the English manorial system, farming practices, family structure, domestic architecture and house furnishings, the religious culture, and the schism in the Dutch Reformed Church that paralleled the divisions between Patriots and Tories in the War of Revolution.
As to the Smith family, I would like to know about Sarah Smith and her husband John Parse, where they were married and who were their ancestors and where from. The couple may have lived in Sussex Co., and also were registered in a baptist church near Amity, Orange Co., NY. Their oldest son was born ca. 1767. They had 10-11 children, so perhaps Sarah Smith was born in the early 1740s. Thank you for any information. Sharon
