Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting The next meeting is this coming Saturday. WCGS welcomes back Leslie Albrecht Huber on Saturday, May 9. Our local members will recall that she gave us a presentation called Crossing the Ocean with the Internet at our meeting on November 10, 2007. It was a great time so WCGS wants to hear another talk from Leslie. Her topic for this meeting will be Voyage to America. Leslie summarizes this topic on her website (_www.understandingyourancestors.com_ (http://www.understandingyourancestors.com) ) by saying, “For genealogy researchers, immigration can be a high hurdle. But for our ancestors, it was a life changing experience. Find out what setting sail to America was like during the 1800s.” A holder of a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in public affairs, she has published seventy-eight articles in family history magazines such as Family Chronicle, Family Tree, Heritage Quest and Ancestry, among many others. Come on! Come to the meeting!!! MEETING INFO: TOPIC: Voyage to America WHEN: Saturday, MAY 9, 2009 @ 10 a.m. WHERE: Aldersgate Methodist Church, 600 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry (across from Mercy College on route 9) Guests are welcome. Robin, and any Carpenter researchers: Don't remember if I sent this to earlier, but I have in my notes an unidentified Marian Carpenter married to Jonathan Pierce, she born about 1808 in Canton, St. Lawrence, NY. This may be the same Jonathan Pierce who married Mary Litchfield about 1770 in Scituate, MA. His line is from Ben and Charity Howard Pierce from Ben and Mary Cowan Pierce from Capt. Ben Pearce and Martha or Elizabeth Adams from Capt. Michael J. Pierce and Persis Eames, and from Richard and Martha or Richard and Marguerite Coney. I also have a Jonathan Pearce and Sarah Southwick m. Stephentown, NY about 1789; if anyone knows of them, please let me know their background. I think I came across a Wm. or Benjamin Pearce married to a Sarah Southwick who resided at Pochuck/Amity and bought and sold +80 acres in a parcel there in the 1790s. I am wondering if she was the Sarah Pearce buried at Clove Cemetery in Sussex Co., and it appears that a daughter (Susannah or Samantha) was buried there as well, but no information on the father. Thanks for any clarification on this. Sharon Pearce, sharpearce@yahoo.com

Researchers: I seek information on this couple's son, Joshua Smith m. to Anna Tubbs: George8, Joshua7, Wait6, Wait5, William4, Barnard3, William2, Thomas1, Smith, George was born 10 Sep 1736, Orange, NY, and died (unknown). George married Sarah Coleman, daughter of Joseph Coleman and (unknown). Sarah was born abt 1743, of Ulster, NY and died aft 1793 of Ulster, NY. Children of George Smith and Sarah Coleman are: i. Hannah Smith, b. 24 Dec 1766, Goshen, Orange, NY, died aft 1837 of Damascus, Wayne, PA, Married Mr. Bush bef 1837. ii. George Smith, b. 10 Sep 1766 iii. Nathan Smith, b. 21 Jun 1767, of NY iv. Joshua Smith, b. 10 May 1769, of NY, Married Anna Tubbs abt. 1792, Benton, Ontario, NY Anna's sister, Roxanne, married into the William Willis Pearce and Mary Shepard family, marrying their son, Colville Pearce, in Hamilton Co., OH. I never knew if Roxa just came west to marry Colville or arrived by some other means. The Benton history suggests both of these women moved to the Cleveland area with their husbands. Roxanna and Colville were not near Cleveland, they were near Cincinnati, then moved into Decatur and Shelby Cos., IN with his family. I suspect, since others from the Lakes did the same, that Joshua Smith may have moved in this migration. If anyone is working on this Smith family from Orange (earlier Ulster) Co., that moved to Benton as so many did, then west, I would appreciate any info you can share. For those of you that don't know about these two tips (that took me a looong to realize - DOH!): 1 I was searching for an ancestor in 19th century newspapers. One paper was a hit, but I just couldn't find the woman's name in any of the stories. I was about to chalk it up to another ancestry search flub when I noticed her name after all - as one of the endorsers in an ad for a patent medicine product! I guess those local names can be real after all. It probably lulls the rest of the neighborhood into trying the stuff, too. Perhaps she got a free bottle or a buck for her endorsement. 2 I'm transcribing a directory and see where sometimes a person moves away or dies between the info being recorded and the printing of the book. I'm guessing that in order to save re-designing the whole page, they just add in the note the person moved to such a place or died. This can be helpful, secondary info for you if your relative has such a note attached to their listing. Also, when there's a widow listed in a directory, she's generally entered in as Sally Smith, widow of Joe. Another helpful gesture.
Hi Shelley, There is a lady who runs the Wheeler DNA project that I suppose might be able to help you. Also, my aunt married into a Wheeler family that lived in upstate New York. I think this Wheeler family is now based in the Southern Tier region where Binghamton is, not the Buffalo area. My aunt has been close to her sisters-in-law, so I will ask her a little bit about the family. It's nice of you to invest your time and money in this rescue. Hi, Shelley - Most of the major historical societies will excitedly accept donations for their collections and conservation, especially photo albums. The Ohio Historical Society's e-dress, the last I looked: http://www.ohiohistory.org/ The other places have their own, no doubt. You'll get a receipt for it's value to present to the IRS. I found an autograph book from 1890 (darn census!). I'm trying to find the names of the young people on the 1880 & 1900 censuses. So far, I've found most in Staten Island. When I get the chance, I'll write everything up and send the kaboodle to the NYC Library or NY Historical Society. Aren't we wonderful? I've "rescued" an old photograph album which appears to have belonged to Georgie W. WHEELER and is dated Christmas 1874. Based on limited research I was able to find quite a bit of information regarding the people pictured in the album and have included some of that below along with details of each of the photographs contained in the album: Georgie W. WHEELER Photograph Album Christmas 1874 . Wm. F. WHEELER, taken at the A. Simson Studio in Buffalo, NY, 1870's, man in his 60's . Mrs. Wm. F. WHEELER - Flora ATKINS, taken at the A. Simson Studio in Buffalo, NY, 1870's, woman in her 50's William French WHEELER b. 12 Jun 1811 in Hancock, NY to parents William Deacon WHEELER (b. 21 May 1774 in New London, CT) and Eleanor KNOX (b. 21 Aug 1774 in Blandford, MA). William was one of 7 children born to this couple, siblings include Malina; Nelson Knox; Elizabeth; Truman Hubbell; Adison Justin; and George Downs WHEELER, all born in Montgomery, MA and Hancock or Deposit, NY between 1805 and 1818. First married Flora ATKINS (b. 2 Jun 1815) on 1 Sept 1839 in Cleveland, OH and together they had 6 children including, Emily Godfrey; Helen Elizabeth; Nelson Platt; William Egbert; Martha Augusta; and George Downs WHEELER. All children born in the 1840's, some born in Portville or Mayville, NY. His wife Flora ATKINS was the daughter of Quintus F. ATKINS and Sallie WRIGHT. Flora ATKINS WHEELER died in Portville, NY on 3 Jun 1950. A second marriage was to Marilla CLARK (b. 3 Nov 1821) with whom he had a child, Lilla C. WHEELER b. 1 Sept 1859. Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting The Westchester County Genealogical Society welcomes Toni McKeen with her program titled Let City Directories Work For You on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 10am. City Directories are very valuable and useful tools that genealogists use to track people over a span of years, especially the years falling between the takings of the census. They give you a person’s address and an occupation in a given year and several members of the same family unit who were gainfully employed will appear in the alphabetized list. Toni McKeen has been passionate about genealogy for over 20 years. Toni has been researching her huge Italian family as well as her husband’s Irish family during this time. Her research has led her to the ancestral homes of her grandparents in Sicily, Calabria, and the Amalfi Coast of Italy and she have made several trips to the "homeland" in search of documents. Ms. McKeen has taught several levels of genealogy in Founders Hall in Ridgefield, CT for more than 5 years as well as given other lectures in New York and Connecticut. This lecture will focus on the use of city directories in genealogical research. The meeting opens at 10:00 a.m. at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 600 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, NY. All are welcome to come to the meeting.
