All, I am curious to learn whether John Bailey, one of four persons to found the Elizabethtown Associates in the 1690s which set up allotments for parcels in that area which included Scotsplain in Essex/Union Co., NJ was related to David P. Bailey of Sussex Co. ca. pre to post Revolution. Members of the group received 100 acre allotments and some prevalent names were Joseph Lyon and Jonathan Littell. These names were found through the Revolution in the Scotsplain area but also appear in the Pochuck (Sussex)/Amity (Orange) area during and post Revolution. David P. Bailey resided in Dutch Pond settlement which extended to Pleasant Lake on Mt. Pochuck. An apple tree planted there dated back to at least 1750. Wondering if there was a clear migration path from Essex Co. to Sussex Co. for the Bailey family, followed also by the Lyon and Littell families and others. I have been trying to figure out whether the Littells and Lyons, who owned extensive land on Pochuck and near Vernon Twp., in Sussex later migrated to Essex or the other way around. All of this leading to my Pearce family who were at the least neighbors of the Baileys. They may be the same Baileys with whom they intermarried in Indiana in the 1800s and 1900s. The Pearce family of Scotsplain, evidently present there perhaps by 1700 or anywhere up to 1740s, later intermarried with the Lyon and Littell families and those families migrated together to Butler Co., Ohio. Does anyone know where the Lyon and Littell families came from to NJ, Long Island or Westchester Co., NY or elsewhere? Dear Julia, Wow thank you for all the information. I will have to take time to digest that. I did get some information that Jarvis and his son (my great great grandfather) Frank Purdy lived in Fair Oaks. I guess that would mean their address was Wallkill/Middletown, not the Village of Wallkill. I do know that Jarvis was a carpenter and his son Frank was a blacksmith in Fair Oaks. I also know that Frank owned over 120 acres and about 100 acres of that was sold so a Golf Course could be put in. I think that is the one that is on Sands Road in Fair Oaks called Wallkill Golf Course. Most of my life I was told the family was from Middletown, NY. The Regent of the DAR where I live went to Washington DC to the DAR Library and did find Fannie Pudy (my great grandmother) in a book called "Wallkill Orange County Book of Births 1880-1913". It had her date of birth, place of birth and parents. I am hoping that the National Archives in Philadephia will also have this book which would record my Grandmother, Fannie's daughter, Jennie Ogden born in 1902. I know that book would not have Louisa Comfort Purdy in it. Since I have two years to get my information back to the DAR, I will send for the longer wait information. Thank you so much for your time, it has been a very interesting and enjoyable journey back in time and it's not over yet. I hope I may call on you if I need additional information. Gratefully yours, Pat Hodge ________________________________ From: "nyorange-request@rootsweb.com" <nyorange-request@rootsweb.com> To: nyorange@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, August 1, 2009 3:01:08 AM Subject: NYORANGE Digest, Vol 4, Issue 65 Today's Topics: 1. A quick check on MapQuest for Bloomingburg will illustrate this you. Louisa & Jarvis' cemetery is immediately across the river in the T/Wallkill, Orange County. They are in the Sherer Tract of the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery, Inc. I have the name and number of the chair of the cemetery board if you want to check whether or not the burial records have Louisa's parents listed. Fingers crossed! And did you mean the T/Wallkill, Orange County, NY or the VILLAGE of Wallkill, Ulster County, NY? Although it's true in general that that NYS didn't codify collection of birth, marriage, or death certificates prior to 1880, some diligent town clerks collected them anyway. Or like T/Wawarsing, Ulster, NY, they were legally collected around 1850 for about 2 years (maybe other Ulster County places? don't know). And even after 1880, many who were mandated to record vital records just didn't until NYS began cracking down in the early 1900s. Anything to thwart a descendant family historian!!! You can read more about NYS vital records at this site (in NYS, "upstate" means anyplace north of NYC): ?http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-obtain-copies-of-vital-records.html Be sure to follow the links for updates. I remember a library in NYS volunteered to look up VR numbers from microfiche for people who wanted to buy the VRs themselves. Maybe they still do. If you buy a VR from the NYS Department of Health in Albany, NY, you'll get a copy of the actual document, though the wait will be 5-6 months. If you pay the same $22 amount to the town clerk, the wait will be much shorter, but you'll recieve only a synopsis of the info that's on the certificate. The clerks kept logs of the SOME of the info and forward the original to the DOH. Your choice, time verses amount of info. One birth document I got from a Westchester County town clerk didn't even have the hospital or parents name on it. I was 8-1/2 inches wide by 3+ inches long - that's it! They fit 3 per sheet of paper. Newspaper microfilms are at the Thrall Library in Middletown, NY. Several of us live not too far away. Message lost. I also explained about the Bloomingburg in Orange County and Bloomingburg in Sullivan County thing. It's very confusing! Don't have time now, but will try to do it again in a few days. Remind me if you seem to wait too long. Julia --- On Fri, 7/24/09, Patricia Hodge <pgh2008@verizon.net> wrote: I am looking for the parents of Louisa I or J Comfort... Pat

There are no people in my Gardner line by the name of Charles or Phoebe. Thanks for trying to help. Gaycha Mayhew
I have a Gardner/Osborn line. David Osborn married Phoebe Gardner. Phoebe was the daughter of Charles Gardner and Julia Misner and David was the son of Absalom Osborn. I am still searching for the parents of Charles Gardner. I believe Charles was born in 1831 in Otisville, NY. Thanks, Barbara
I am looking for the parents of Louisa I or J Comfort, b. 6 Oct 1833 and d. 4 Feb 1914 in Bloomingburgh, then Sullivan County, New York. I have her parents as being Benjamin Daniel Comfort 1795-1843 and Hannah Woodward 1794-1852and living in, Bloomingburgh, Montgomery and Wallkill, NY. She married Jarvis N. Purdy in 1854, and moved to Wallkill. She appears in the 1850 census for Montgomery, Orange Cty, NY and 1880 census for Wallkill, Orange Cty., NY and was buried in Bloomingburgh Sullivan, Cty., NY. I need proof of her parentage to prove a connection between my 7th and 8th generation for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). My application is pending with three additonal evidences needed, this being one. If anyone can help me I would be enternally grateful. My email is pgh2008@verizon.net. Thank you very much, Pat Hodge
My aunt use to live on Gardnertown Road in the Town of Newburgh and my mother attended the Gardnertown Methodist Church. Wikipedia has an entry for Gardnertown. Might give some clues. Pat, the broken links you could not get to from the Orange County GenWeb site might be: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyorange/assessment_01.htm http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyorange/assessment_02.htm etc....01.htm up to 06.htm I hope that helps, and that you are able to contact the OC GenWeb coordinator Jose Nieves Rivera direct. Hmmmm, I see you're correct - no OC in the 1865 or 1892 Census. Bummer! Were the records damaged or lost? Orange was one of the original Province of NY counties, so it wasn't that it didn't exist. I know that the Orange County Genealogical Society has a NYS Census for OC on microfilm, but I don't remember the year. It wasn't indexed it when I saw it and I was way too tired to scan through it that day. --- On Thu, 7/9/09, HistoryNW@aol.com <HistoryNW@aol.com> wrote: There is never anything for Orange County.
Summer is here, which means it is time to start thinking reunion. This year the Phillips-Knapp reunion falls the weekend of September 19-20. On Saturday the 19th we will have our traditional picnic at the park in Haverstraw. For Sunday we have exciting new plans. Research over the winter has revealed that Daniel, Eli and Gilbert Phillips were indeed born at Phillips Manor as some of us were told by our grandmothers. Eli gives this information in an affidavit he filed with his Revolutionary pension application. There is no evidence that they were part of the Phillips Family of the Manor, but could be shirt-tail relatives. They most likely lived northeast of the Manor, in a town now called Phillipsburg. We will continue to research this matter. Our plans for reunion Sunday are to visit both the Phillips Manor Hall and the Phillips Farm, both of which are just across the river in Westchester County. We will eat lunch in a nearby restaurant, and get private tours of both locations. In addition, we will try to find a speaker who can tell us more about the Manor family and other Phillips families in the area. It should be both fun and educational. Try to arrange to join us!
