    1. [NYORANGE] OCGS is very much alive and well - please come and use our resources
    2. Marty
    3. The following statement, posted at nyorange-l could be misleading. It does >>> not <<< refer to OCGS. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the message that was posted: The last I know, the historical society no longer has their space in the Goshen library. Their stuff is in storage in the basement of the library, now. If you needed some info, a confused-looking librarian will take a message to give to the HS volunteer that came in periodically. I hope they found a better way in the intervening 1-1/2 years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Orange County Genealogical Society is very alive and well, in the 1841 Historic Courhouse, 101 Main Street, Goshen. The above statement refers to the Goshen Public Library and Historical Society just one block away from OCGS. They are totally independent from each other. Library staff frequently send researchers to OCGS (during OCGS open hours) and vice-versa. Unfortunately for researchers, the situation at the library has not improved. They are still very cramped for space, and most of the historical references are still in the basement. They very much want to build a new, larger, library, but that will not happen quickly. So plan to come to OCGS and our volunteers will be happy to help you. Our open hours are posted at www.ocgsny.org. Marty Irons OCGS coordinator of volunteers

    3. All,   Apologies.  I see K. Powell responded to me earlier as to John Bayley.  I meant to say the John Bayley of the Elizabethtown Associates led the allotment sales about 1699, so might have been an ancestor of the Bayleys of Westchester.  One of the owners of this land in Essex Co. was a Daniel Pearce of MA.  Perhaps the Bayleys came down from MA to Westchester.   Begin: ...Dunno where my Baileys came from before Westchester offhand but they migrated to Licking Co, OH after the Revolution, along with Caleb Hill and offspring. Caleb's dau Hannah had married Isaac Bailey, son of John; John Bailey came from Westchester to Wallkill which was in Ulster Co. End Sharon Pearce, sharpearce@yahoo.com --- On Mon, 8/31/09, S. 3. The last I know, the historical society no longer has their space in the Goshen library. Their stuff is in storage in the basement of the library, now. If you needed some info, a confused-looking librarian will take a message to give to the HS volunteer that came in periodically. I hope they found a better way in the intervening 1-1/2 years. 3. Hi, Listees ~ I just looked at the Google Book previews of 'Pioneer Families of Orange County, New York' by Bill Reamy. As a point of clarity, for the people I searched in the book, there seems to be a heavy reliance on the LDS Ancestral File. This is disappointing. As you know, it is a collection of data that can be, in many cases, HIGHLY suspect. Even the FamilySearch.org site says: "About Ancestral File     Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978.  The information has not been verified against any official records.  Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy." My mother was a member of the Church when she was alive. Her pedigree info, submitted in all good faith, was about 75% correct (though thin - before home computers) and had about 25% totally wrong "relatives". She submitted her charts on the names I just searched. Bummer!
