Suzanne, you could try calling the Wallkill Cemetery Association at 845-343-6176 (copied from the Feb 2009 phone book).
I know the office (in the white house out front to the left side of the building) is only open one day a week for a few hours, but I don't remember the details. You may have to call several times. Good luck! --- On Fri, 1/29/10, Marty <k2mi@frontiernet.net> wrote: ...try calling the Wallkill Cemetery Association at 845-343-6176...

Hello, Judy - By all means, IF there is a death certificate for young Mr Snyder - get it from the Dept of Health in Albany. Since it's the death was 1893, there should legally be a certificate for him. Many places in NYS dragged their heels about compliance, though I haven't heard of PJ doing so. Local Town Clerks do NOT retain original vital records. They record a summarized version of the info in their books and forward the real document on. Getting the "death certificate" from the Town Clerk will net you a form letter, with a dab of this summary info typed in, at the same price that Albany charges for the true copy. I learned this the hard way early on when I got my mom's "birth certificate" from the Port Jervis Town Clerk. In addition to being a form letter on very flimsy paper, it was stamped all over at random with a red "genealogy only" stamp. Hardly at all classy! Was your guy an Erie employee? You might check Jim Sponholz's site dedicated to the memory of Erie employees. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sponholz/erie.html There are several Snyders/Sniders listed and from my family's example, multiple members of the same family went to work on the Erie: Erie Railroad Employee Rosters: Snyder A.C. If your guy WAS an Erie employee, Mr Sponholz will be thrilled to get any info from you to add to his site. The obit & DC would be perfect additions. Patience, though, it's a modest one-man site and it can take months for him to get back to you. "Germantown" is the section of Port Jervis near where the Roundhouse is today. Hi, Does anyone know of a complete transcript of Wallkill Cemetery, or a current contact for them? I wrote to: WALLKILL CEMETERY, 160 MIDWAY ROAD, MIDDLETOWN, NY 10940 With a check for a burial search, but received no reply, nor was the check cashed. I am seeking info on the below Chauncey Ward, trying trying to find death date for his wife Sarah Ann. She was alive on 1920 census, and could not find them in 1930, Chauncey died 1936. Middletown Times Herald, 6-3-1936 Chauncey Ward died yesterday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Ernest Wallace, New York avenue, after an illness of three weeks. He was born in Washingtonville, October twenty-fourth, 1846. Surviving relatives are four daughters, Mrs. John Doyle of ?vestown, Mrs. Frank Willis of Franklin, NJ, Mrs. Carrie Talmadge of Springfield, O., and Mrs. Elizabeth Menzies of Middletown. Private funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 at the Reilly Funeral Home, thirty-three Railroad avenue. Burial will be in Wallkill cemetery. Thanks, Suzanne
Marty, Thank for the offer: Seeking- Sarah Ann Ward between 1910-1930 Thanks!
I was looking for the grave of my great grandfather who served in the Civil War. John M. Merritt served in the 124th NY vol. Company G. He died March 31, 1887 in Blooming Grove, Orange County, NY. Some years ago a kind soul answered my inquiry and sent me a photo of my grandfather's headstone which happened to be located next to the gravestone of a member of his family. In a recent move some of my papers were lost and that photo is missing. I believe the cemetery was Greystone. If this reaches the person who sent that photo please contact me. Thank you, Gail Stanton

Some of you have been so kind in helping with my search for Abbie Macauley's death. As recently suggested on this site, I contacted the Onondaga County Library on the 25th and already today received a response. Her date of death was June 7 1945 in Newburgh, 4 months shy of her 99th birthday. I have e-mailed the Newburgh library for a copy of the obit, and want you to know how grateful I am to the helpful people on this list. Diane, Grand Rapids MI

All, I've followed up on suggestions concerning the VR index in Albany and the Onondaga Co Public Library has been most helpfull. One of the records they came back with was a birth in "Oakee". Now the name did not mean anything to me and I checked with Google maps but nothing came up that fitted. I am presuming its NY State, well it must be if its in the Albany VR Index. Does anyone know where this place is?
