I have been trying for many years to find Justus Stevens son of Jonathan and Jemima of Chester. I think (cannot prove definitively - yet) I may have found him. In Burford Ontario Canada. Went there circe 1787 with the Reynolds party. He died 1812. Wife is Jane . Children include Jonatham Jemima Dorothy Hannah and Sarah Jane. (according to son Jonathans will. 1783 living (acccording to Journal of Slias Constant) in Orange County. 1794 paid taxes (along with brother Adam) in Elvira Cheming. Does anyone have any info on this fellow? I have all the stuff from Susannah Whitcomb's book on the Stevens. The book suggests he went to Canada as does Helen Predmore in her notes.

Alan, The person I lost contact with has not replied yet. There are many, many people researching MAPES in Orange County. I'd suggest you post what you see on nyorange list - that way more than one person will see it - or write to OCGS, 101 Main St, Goshen NY 10924. If you do write to OCGS, please be concise and to the point. General questions get general answers, and most people want specific answers to specific questions. Good luck. Marty
E-mail to Janice Black at jandon@znet.com was returned. If you're still around, Janet, please contact me direct. I know of someone else who is also researching MAPES of Orange County NY, who would like to contact you. Marty Irons Goshen NY k2mi@frontiernet.net

I don't think so, Anne. When I first went there a few weeks ago, the Local History Room was locked and the reference librarian didn't know anything about the collection within. I had to return when the room was open. The Local History Room woman (Ms Roche, maybe?) is very nice and eager to help. If she's unable to send you a copy of the obit you seek, I'll do so when I next go there, if you'd like. Don't get your hopes up too much, though - those early country obits were frequently more like sparse death notices.
