Ted Myers, on the Dutchess County mailing list, kindly added more information to this list of Gettysburg dead of the 124th Regiment. This could lead to something - round robin postings between various mailing lists with info added along the way. Hello, Listees - Just days ago, I found a gem of a website: "New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center". Although still a work in progress, it is packed with information and images concerning NYS residents who have served, from the pre-Revolution through Desert Storm. * Regimental histories and rosters of members, mostly Civil War - where I found the book from which the list of the 124th Regiment NY Volunteers dead at Gettysburg was taken [my G3GF was in this Regiment for three years as an ambulance driver; he survived, but perhaps saw and handled the dead listed] * Downloadable spreadsheets for "Register of officers whose services terminated prior to Jan. 1, 1858" * A number of online images of Civil War battle flags along with 2 downloadable posters * Online images from various military eras. I like how they say, in a caption to a 1609 drawing: "New York's first "citizen-soldiers" were Native American warriors." Unfortunately, cutbacks have left them unable to take telephone inquiries, but they invite people to write them with questions. http://dmna.state.ny.us/historic/mil-hist.htm

Thanks. I was under the impression that Ancestry had a main search for publications. I didn't realize it was under B-D-M's. I had personally been to those cemeteries in 2004 looking for family, but didn't find anything. My Farr's seem to be very elusive. I had hoped some may be listed in her transcriptions from 1930, that may not exist now. Try Graveyard Transcriptions by Gertrude Barber published 1930 Vol 2 includes Slate Hill Cemetery in Slate Hill, and Vol 4 has Old Ridgeberry Cemetery in Ridgeberry and Slate Hill Cemetery in Chester. Ancestry has all 4 volumes if you have a current subscription. If not, I have copies of a lot of the pages. Hello, Listees - Back in the 1970s, I worked at Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown, NY (Orange Regional Medical Center's previous name) with an RN named Connie SCOFIELD / SCHOFIELD (don't remember the way her family spelled it). The last I knew of her, she was living in Boulder, Colorado. She was from Goshen, Orange, NY and as it turns out, we might be related through Christiana SCHOFIELD's family of Goshen (Christiana's DOB abt 1833; she married Horace PARET in 1858 = my G3GPs). If anyone knows of Connie, please ask her to e-mail me. Thanks so much! Julia

Looking for information on the MORELL family of Orange and Ulster counties. My ancestor Noah Morell was said to have been born in Neversink, Sullivan Co., New York in 1824. According to his 1894 death record (in Erving, MA) he was the son of James MORELL and Loisa LISS. The 1850 Federal census for Shawangunk, Ulster Co., New York lists the James Morell family, composed of James, age 60, laborer, born in Orange County, New York; Elsy Morell, age 53, born in Orange County; Laurence Morell, age 12, born in Ulster Co.; and Loisa Morell, age 8, born in Orange Co. In 1870 there was a James Morell, age 80, living in Williamstown, MA in the family of Milton and Julia Roberts. Coincidentally James' son Noah named two of his children Julia and Milton. And this James was probably the James Morell who died of "old age" in New Ashford, MA on 24 May 1875 at the age of 84 years and 4 months. He was a widower at the time. New Ashford is just south of Willaimstown. All of these records are consistent with a 1790 birth year. Any help would be very much appreciated. Noah was a brick wall for me for close to 40 years. When I broke through that one, I was immediately presented with another. (sigh) Michael Roman http://webpages.charter.net/mroman/morell.htm
