Steven was the founder of Sloatsburg NY, was in the Rev War, lots of history for these folks. Appreciate the backwards family line. Slot (Sloat) line also goes back to New Harlem /New Amsterdam in 1650. Can send you info if you wish. Frank Sloat Arnold, MD
All, have made great progress lately thanks largely to the help of many Orange County Listers. Thankyou in particular to Ginny Byron. I really appreciate it as checking for US records is a bit akward from this side of the Pond. I have another question, does anyone know of a STICKLER family still resident in Highland Falls? This is a family that an ancestor married into, sometime in the beginning of this Century. Thankyou again. Thanks for the info! I happen to be lucky enough to live near and will check it out! Always on the lookout for my elusive Goshen Altmanns! Kim Altmann

Can't help with the Campbell info - but Ridgebury is south west of Middletown - not much more than a crossroads with a Presby Church of which my father was minister 1933 - 1936 - and my first home was the manse there. There is a sign from the main road (one of the many branches of Rt 17? ? ) Frank Sloat
Dear List, Does anybody how, if, any of these folks might be related?? PHINIUS DUN of Goshen - Liber A - page 57 Will made - Dec 26, 1788 Probated Jan. 9, 1789 Wife - Anna Dun Daughters - Zeruiah Dun, Elizabeth Dun Executors - Anna Dun and Moses Carpenter Witnesses - Calvil (I wonder if that is Colvil) Shepard and Ezra Doty My interest in this Phinius Dun is that the above named MOSES CARPENTER was my ancestor. MOSES CARPENTER married ELIZABETH RUNYON of Morris Co. and baptized their daughter in the Goshen Pres. Ch. (Or. Co.), NY in 1775. His wife was apparently deceased by then. Moses remarried a long time prior to 1788 (Phineas Will) but still was his executor. I would guess this was because there were several Dunn/Runyon marriages in the family and he was helping his first wife's family, but I would like to know the relationship because I cannot find the ancestors of Moses Carpenter. I also have a mortgage abstract for PHINIS DUNN, yoeman, Goshen, to Daniel Denton, John Kinner, and John Jackson, Goshen for property in the Wawayanda Patent part of lot # 13 which border south Michael Jackson and North # 14 now in posession of Joseph Carpenter, NW Michael Jackson. pd. Lot # 13 border SW Michael Jackson, # 14 Joseph Carpenter, 90 acres, 250 pounds. I have also found NJ Phineas Dunns, but this seems to be what I have on the Orange Co. Phineas Dun(n). The 1790 Warwick (Orange Co. where my Moses Carpenter is listed also) Federal Census lists: DANIEL DUNN 1-2-3, AARON DUNN 1-0-3, ANNA DUNN 1-3-5, and REUBEN DUNN 1-3-3. Regards, Phoebe in CA P.S. I have a very old and large (some say charcoal over photo) of a young lady, sweet little face, that seems to have the name, "A Dun" scrauled on the back.
Please remove us from list for a while; we are going to be away. Second request. Thanks
Bill: I have a copy of the "RECORDS..." you refer to...sorry, no Robert Fitzgerald there. However, I'm pretty sure that there's a listing of the burials at St. Patricks at the OCGS...I've copied various pages from burial lists, but only the McCulloughs! Lisa Stitt
Hi List, I forgot to mention that the cost of the death certificate information is $11.00. I received it within two weeks of making my request. Sue ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com
Hi List, Several of you recently answered a question for me regarding death certificates in Newburgh. I received what I was looking for and thought I would share it in case it could help someone else: Where: Department of Vital Statistics, City of Newburgh, 83 Broadway, Newburgh, NY 12550 (this is for the city only, not the town or county) What: The information I received is a transcript from their "Records of Deaths" for the City of Newburgh. The information I received was for 1875, but several of you suggested their statistics go back to 1865 Data: The form included spaces for date of death, name, age (in years), marital status, occupation, birthplace (country in my case), father's name, mother's name, place of death (street address in Newburgh), cause of death, other conditions, name of medical attendant, and place of burial. Not all this information was filled in (I received date of death, age, occupation, birthplace, place of death, cause of death, and medical attendant) Hope this helps someone. Hi Beth, Charees here, the one painted total curmugeoneon thes past few days. I now try to disfuse this picture by using my 22 years of experience and knowledge as a genealogist to help you solve your puzzle.Usually its the maiden name we are all looking for in this case its the husband. Accept for the apologizing, which was not necessary, as you have approached the list correctly by asking for help and not asking for someone to do the work for you. Finding a published genealogy on the CAMPBELLS which included your particular CAMPBELL family would be nice, however, the probabilities are small, as, as you have indicated the surname CAMPBELLis not an uncommon one. Since you have a probable location, Ridgebury, we will start from there. [I was born and raise in Orange Co. but I am not familair with Ridgebury, where is it located] 1st I assume you have already done this but if not Check the will or Probate of your GGG grandfahter to see if he might have left a bequest to his daughter an Abagail wife of ? CAMPBELL. If the Grandfather died before his wife then check for a will or probate for his wife, Abagail's mother. 2nd Draw a five mile circle around Ridgebury, which narrows the search area some but still presents a daunting search task, and check the census backward from 1850 to the estimated date of her marriage for CAMPBELL families, again working outward in a circle from Ridgebury for one with a female of the correct age as your Abagail would have been a wife of. 3rd If you know her age and birthdate look at church records in the same 5 mile area for the marriages of an Abagail Overton to a CAMPBELL. It was usual for these arly marriages to take place in the resident area of the bride, but it is not a given. If the place of the couples residence was very rural they ma havwe been married inthe nearesxt large village with a church. What was the religion of her parents. She may also have been married by one of the many a circuit riders of the protestant persuasion. 4th With your approximate date for the husbands death. Again using the 5 mile circle check any available newspapers for an Obit or death notice for a ? CAMPBELL and any mention of his survivors. 5th Check the cemetery records of the same five mile area for deaths of any CAMBELLS within the circle and the names of their wives. 6th Check the military records of the War of 1812 for CAMPBELLS in Orange County that served from the 5 mile geographical area we have . He may could have served and died in that conflict. You might be able to find a service record or pension record that gives the name of his wife. Your task is not an easy one, nobody ever said genealogy was an easy passtime, but it is not impossible to solve this question if you are persistent and thorough in your research. Good hunting, Charles ________________________________________________________________________________________________ In light of recent postings I know I'm taking a chance of getting clobbered for this, but I am frankly overwhelmed by the daunting task facing me. Here's the scoop: I have a daughter of my gggg'grandfather, named Abagail OVERTON, who married someone named ______CAMPBELL, marriage date/location unknown, but probably near Ridgebury ca 1800-1810?. This has been found through family Bible notations and supported by finding an entry for her in the 1850 Orange County, NY census (Wallkill), she being enumerated with a brother's family. In attempting to find the name of her husband, I've discovered that there are TONS of Campbells in the OC area. I am attempting to narrow things down by checking the censuses from 1810 through 1840 for Campbells with a female of the right age, but even so, the task is intimidating. A search at the OC Surrogate's office recently for a will produced no immediate results. Since she was living with family for the 1850 census, I assume logically her husband died previous to 1850 - no reason to think at this point there was a divorce or other separation. Here's my question: does anyone know of any publications regarding ANY of the CAMPBELLS of Orange County covering the years 1800-1850? This might help me narrow down the search if I can use previous published material to eliminate some possibilities, or get a lead on people to check the primary sources for. I am looking not for "free info," but rather for someone to steer me in a direction so I can continue my research, as I heretofore have studied nothing about the CAMPBELLS. Many thanks for your patience in reading this post, and for any constructive replies. Beth St. Paul, MN
Is there anyone out there researching these families. Thanks for any help.
If anyone answers the quarry by Beth in MN please send it to the list. I to am looking for Campbells in that area. but Beth's don't seem to fit my profile. Barbara
Hi, all- I am looking for information about the family of William K. Gray, b. about 1822 and Frances/Fanny Grannis, b. 1827 in Goshen. They were apparently married in Goshen about 1845, though that information is from an LDS Ancestral File and therefore unverified by me! I have William K. Gray's birthplace as East Orange, NJ, but I am not certain of that, either. I would love to exchange information and try to work on more solid evidence for these families if anyone is interested! It looks like the Grannis family came to Goshen in the early 1800s and married into the Dains family--specifically, Julia Ann Dains, b. 1793 in Goshen (any Dains researchers out there?). And for any non-Gray/Grannis/Dains researchers...if you have any suggestions for publications I ought to be consulting, that would be great! I live in Minnesota, but can order OCGS publications online if any of them seem like they will help. These Grays, in particular, have been giving me fits for several years. They are almost as bad as the SMITHS I have--two big, messy branches of those (though not OC ones!). Thanks--and happy hunting. Terri, Hope this helps your search!! Under and Turnpikes pg 56 O.C.H. One road from the village of Montgomery in a pretty straight direction through Coldenham to Newburgh. Another near the Wallkill, in the Town of Montgomert, where old Capt. James McBride lived, through Neelytown and Little Britain to the Square, where it forked, one leading to New Windor, the other to Newburgh. this was called the Old Little Britain road to New Windor and Newburgh. Your in Genealogy Joanne > I have searched for years to find any information at all on my gggrandmother, Alice McCur, who married Charles Clinton and lived in the Little Britain area. They had a daughter Margaret Clinton, b. 1847, d. 1905, married Cornelius Freer. I've tried Soundex, IGI, etc., and have never had any luck finding the Mc Cur name anywhere. Does it sound familiar to anyone? I would sincerely appreciate any help at all. Thanks. Terri Freer Wilson, Houston, TX > >
