    1. Re: 1775 Assessment Roll for Orange Co.
    2. Excellent job Tom and thank you!!! I went to the list anticipating finding my ancestors who lived and owned land in Orange County, but.... they weren't all there. :-( This brings up a few questions that maybe someone on the list can answer: 1. Would leased land from a major landowner (such as Livingstone, Beekman, etc.) show up in Assessment Rolls? 2. What about land that was held by multiple people or families? Would each be listed? or just one name? none? 3. Loyalist land that was LATER confiscated does not show up in this Assessment Roll. Was it "expunged"? Can it be found anywhere? in the original roll? For example: the Miller family owned land and a grist mill and saw mill in Smith's Clove, Precinct of Cornwall, Orange County (now Monroe). They had the land as early as 1754. The head of the family, Garret Miller Sr. (1737-1778) was a Capt. in the Cornwall Reg. of Eastern Orange Co. Militia (qualifying descendants for DAR). He left his property equally/jointly to his 10 children. One, Elizabeth Miller, had married Philip Roblin. Because the Roblins were "notorious" loyalists, the mill and land were confiscated in 1779. The Assessment Roll had no Roblin (3 familes) nor Garret Miller nor his children. Any ideas? Thanks, Linda Burkell

    1. 1775 Assessment Roll for Orange Co.
    2. Thomas Cornell
    3. Hello all, I was expecting the 1775 Orange Co. Assessment Roll to show up in the newsletter days ago, but apparently it was too large. Thanks to the hard work of JosÈ Rivera Nieves who is webmaster of the Orange Co. site, the Roll is available to all there. He has it nicely arranged into a group of pages, and you won't have to look at the ragged columns of data you would have seen in an e-mail. It's also considerably more permanent this way and can be accessed for additional study any time you wish. What you will find is the alphabetized version with last name first. I think that will make it much easier to spot your ancestor. Following the name, you will find the district and page numbers. These tell you where you will find the actual listing in Ruttenber & Clark. On the first of the pages is a description of the ten assessment districts so you will know approximately where they are. I do wish it were possible to draw an overlay on an Orange Co. map giving exact locations, but Ruttenber & Clark makes it clear this is not possible. So, we have to make do with the descriptions they provided us. I'm thankful for this much information as it does suggest a connection between my known 5xGGF, Samuel Knapp and the unknown Samuel Cornell who lived in District 8 of western Warwick. They were surely near neighbors, and I think that is the primary value of this assessment roll. Please go take a look at José's and my hard work. I hope it helps you. Best wishes, Tom Cornell Web Site: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorange/assessment_01.htm>

    2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Hi All, Thanks to everyone who have helped me with the location of Moodna Creek near Cornwall where I believe my relative John Hancon was born in 1835. This JOHN HANCON was a champion oarsman and boat-builder of Cornwall in the late 1850s and 1860s. He took part in rowing races in many places on the Hudson and was awarded a medal by the West End Aquatic Association of Boston. This was reported in a local paper in Hereford, England where his uncle and my 3xgreatgreatuncle lived. I am still trying to find out where John's parents lived in 1830 - 1860 and wonder if there were any biographies written about the oarsmen of the Hudson which may give details of their parents and families. The Ward brothers of Cornwall raced against John Hancon and I have details of their family if anyone is interested. Can anyone help please. Ros Dunnico. Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. England.

    1. Taylor/Doerrer/Carpenter
    2. Hi, I am new to the list and am trying to start researching three family lines that are connected to Orange County New York. I don't know too much about these lines. James Taylor married Melissa Carpenter in the mid 1800's at Pond Eddy New York. James and Melissa had a son Joseph Levi Taylor my grandfather.(b1877) Joseph Levi Taylor married Elizabeth Dorrer/Doerrer. They lived in Uniontown and Port Jervis for many years. They had the following children: Blanche, LaDorra, Lulu, Matthew, James (1900-1944) and Agnes(1903-1997). Joseph and Elizabeth and four of their children are buried in New Lebenon Pa. Elizabeth did have a brother Jim Dorrer/Doerrer. His wife's name was Martha and they had four daughters. I am interested in any information about the above surnames. Thanks so much, Jim Taylor

    2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Dear All, Many thanks to all who have sent replies to my query about Modna. Some have suggested Modena in Ulster Co. I have tried this place without success. Another suggestion was that it is east of Syracuse and I have posted a message on the Onodago Co mailing list. The one I like the most is that it is Moodna Creek as I was told that Modna was in Orange Co. Can anyone help with some information about Moodna Creek. Were there people living there in the 1830s and does anyone have access to records? Thanks again from across the pond. Ros Dunnico. Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. England.

    2. David W. Wyble Sr.
    3. Looking for anyone who may have access to the History of Orange County, Ruttenber and Clark. On Page 16 it lists ownners of plots followed by a fold out map of the patent. My ancestor Conrad Waible/wible (spelling varied) purchased a farm from a Joshua Martin in 1786. The land was believed to have been originally in Orange County but ended up in Rockland County when the latter was formed. Looking to see if Conrad or Joshua is listed in this manual. Any one who can help will be greatly appreciated. Dave Wyble Sr.

    1. Irish ancestry
    2. Does anyone know or have any knowledge of the Irish that settled in Newburgh between 1850-60? I wondered if there were any particular Irish county that most of them emigrated from. I have ancestors of Irish descent but I can't seem to find out where in Ireland they were from. Also, does anyone know why so many Irish came to Newburgh? If you look in the 1860 census, there a lot of people that were born in Ireland. Robin Newburgh
