As I hit the send button I realized I didn't give my complete email address. Sorry. If anyone has any info on John H. MILLER, my email address is: glenbeth@phonewave.net Thanks, Beth
I'm looking for more information on the following person. I have a great-great grandfather John Henry MILLER. Birthdate (unconfirmed) is 4 May (Mar?) 1833 NY. Married Dec 1852 to Sarah Ann NEWMAN. Died 14 Jun 1901 Brooklyn, NY. His obit says he was in the Engineer corps in the Civil War. To make a *long* story short: There was a John MILLER who enlisted at Goshen, Orange, NY in the 1st Engineer corp co. B age 33 on 6 Mar 1865 that could be mine. Do any of you know anything about the John H. MILLER who enlisted at Goshen? I'd appreciate your help. Thank you, Beth Perazzo<phonewave.net>
Hi, I'm just new on this list (but don't know how I've missed it before!). Among the many objects of my interest is to find what became of Samuel Carpenter, son of Carman Carpenter and Mary Webb, born probably about 1780-1785 in Goshen. Samuel married Clarissa __________, and I have a deed by which they sold land in Minisink in 1815 to Peter Mills. Any hints of what became of Samuel and his family would be greatly appreciated. (Leads on ANY Clarissa born in OC around 1780s and spouse not accounted for as of 1814 would help.)
Does anyone on the list have any interest or info on volunteer fireman around the turn of the century. I have a photo album that belonged to my ggrandmother Mary Ann BROWN SCOTT. She was b. in Newburgh in 1860 and died in Newburgh in 1933. Unfortunately nobody is named on any of the pictures. There are numerous pictures of firemen. I think one of the companies was Highland. I imagined they were all in Newburgh. Robin
Thanks to all who answered my question. "Oath" of Allegiance seems to be what I'm looking for. Evidently, my ancestors, the Demarest's, thought it important enough to mention in connection to the family name. Does anyone know if there's any information on this subject in books about Orange Co.? Or, perhaps, reference to the Demarest's who lived in Goshen mid - late 1700's? My ggggrandfather, John Demarest b. in 1746 (Goshen), was a Revolutionary War soldier serving in the 2nd Regt., Orange Co. Militia... Jackie bunny-jo@webtv.net

Based on my research on all materials that I have seen I have observations/comments: 1. I believe this is the first time I have seen a date of death for RUTH COE. 2. It seems to me that this must have been written by a descendant of Moses Carpenter's second wife, HANNAH SMITH because: The obvious: this person was looking for HER ancestors and also because we know that the named ELIZABETH Carpenter married a WISNER, not a WILSON, (thus showing a lack of re. the first wife's line of descent.) 3. Cole is the only other name that I recognized! I know that a descendant of Moses and his first wife, Elizabeth Runyon had a grandaughter Laura MELVIN who married a Cole, but do not know if this could be the same Cole family mentioned above. 4. The Munro spelling is correct, Reed has been recorded as Reid also, and Redmond is reported as Redman and Redmon. I sure would appreciate any help with this. Who wrote this query????? Please it on if you have access to others or other lists that might be able to help. Thank you, Phoebe
Folks, Orange Co. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD pgs. 1185-86 Tells about DANIEL REEVE and his wife RUTH ANN CARPENTER. He was the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (Decker) Reeve - Decker/VanEtten RUTH ANN CARPENTER states they were married in 1839. REEVE CHILDREN: Daniel C. attorney d 1871 age 30 Middletown Valentine H farmer d 1886 Martha J. "makes her home on the farm where her grandparents settled in 1804" - does not say which grandparents. Ruth A. is the wife of EDWARD SILK of Middletown her son: Reeve A. SILK It then goes into the classical description of the Wm Carpenter of Rehoboth history... The lists descendancy as Wm, John, John, John (as in AB Carpenter) ISAAC b in Goshen March 31, 1747. "His father, who was an early settler of Orange County, was in July 1721 one of the men who gave land for the village of Goshen to be laid out with its church parsonage, cemter, etc. He had eight children. ISAAC was married to Mrs. Susanna (McKinney) Thompson, of Scotch-Irish descent a lady several year younger than himself. Her parents were Edward and Mary (Dekay) McKinney." MY comment - this sounds like straight out of the ABCarpenter Memorial, except the Carpenter Memorial indicates that she (Mrs. Susanna (McKinney) was born in Ireland - I don't understand how that would be, given that she was a DeKay, and the Dekays would have been in Or. co. before her birth. I don't know if this would apply to New York but I have found a long list of people in Fairfield County CT that represents those giving their 'Oath of Allegience' to the government of the State of Conn. This particular oath says that the person believes that the King of England does not have any rights over the people of the state. This Oath is listed all the way from 1777 to 1815. I would assume that it is generally the same as the one you refer to. Bill S
Hi folks... I recently received information on my DEMAREST ancestors who lived in Orange Co. during the Revolutionary War era. There is a notation that Jacob B. DEMAREST b. 22 Sep. 1723 "signed the Pledge of Allegiance at Goshen with his sons". Pardon my ignorance, but _what_ exactly does this refer to? Certainly not the Pledge that we know so well today; that only goes back to 1892 I believe. Is there anyone on the list who can tell me something about this? Thanks for your help... Hopefully, more of you have found the Orange Co. web page put together by José Rivera. I want to publicly thank him for the nice job he did in presenting the 1775 Assessment Roll records I scanned and sorted. I've had several thank-you notes for my effort and appreciate them very much. Do there happen to be other non-copyrighted records that would add to the resource on the Orange Co. web page? If so, I will be glad to consider them for scanning and will work with José if he is willing to make them available in the same way. I'm not looking for a huge job, but a few hours would not be asking too much. Actually, I was quite surprised at the accuracy of my scanner and software. I worked from a reprint of the original 1881 book by Ruttenber & Clark and then a xerox copy of the individual pages. Before I tried the first page, I was really dubious it would work. But, it did, and I decided then to do the rest. A few were not quite as good as the first, but even they did not require much correction. In short, the job was manageable. Once in the computer, then it was up to my imagination what to do with the data. As far as I'm aware, this is the only collection of data I have for Orange Co. Do any of you readers happen to have other things that would be worthwhile for the group? Realize that we are helping ourselves but also building for the future. I can't scan handwriting, but printed or typewritten text will generally work. If it ends up with too many errors, maybe we can share the job of correcting it. Give it some thought. Tom Cornell
Does anyone have an Erastus Smith from New York in the very early 1800's? To Linda and others I saw nothing in Ruttenber & Clark about families missing because they were loyalist. That seems to me a dirty trick to go back and expunge a legal record of persons of the wrong political stripe. If they were there, they ought to stay there. I did not find my Cornells in the Roll, but my Gabriel Cornell/Cornwall was born about 1759/60 and was surely not a land owner in 1775. Apparently he never was, as I could not find any Cornell families in Warwick at the Clerk's office in Goshen when I visited there some years ago. If any of you have the opportunity to visit Orange Co. -- and nothing has changed -- be prepared for a most pleasant experience searching for records. The Clerk's and Surrogate's offices are self serve. You go find the record and then have the clerk copy it for you. What could be nicer than that! Wish I could go back, but it's an 800 mile trip for me one way. Tom Cornell
I am just joining the list as I found out that my ggg grandfather, James Smith was born in Orange County. He was born 1810. I don't know who his parents were. He married a Rachel Freese from Tompkins County and his first two children were born there in Dryden. I don't know when he would have left Orange County. Like looking for a needle in a haystack right? Does anyone have any information on the Smiths that lived in Orange County around 1810 and may have moved to the Cayuga/Tompkins area? Thanks for anything. Connie Redd
I am relatively new to this list and genealogy and don't know who else to ask. Please help. I am looking for marriage and death certificates for my great great grandfather, Richard Vanderhoff. He was married at the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe in 1845. He died, not sure where (possibly Warwick) in 1864. Where do I look? State, County or Town? Thank you in advance for helping. Debbie

Debbie I don't have that information, but I can tell you that my records indicate that the Vanderhoofs were intermarried with the Wisners. I have Asa Wisner married Elizabeth Vanderhoof Dec 24, 1774 (Asa son of John, Sr. of Hendrick of Johanes the immigrant) next generation Mary Wisner married 1. Jacob Vanderhoof 2. James Vanderhoof - I wonder if the same person, only different spellings of the name. (Mary was the dau of John, Jr.of John Sr above of Hendrick of Johanes). This information is from the book <Wisners of America> page 165. Microfilm of the book is available thru the LDS church FHC. I do not have any other information on the Vanderhoofs, but can tell you that the Dutch-Colonies-L@rootsweb.com folks run a very active and informative list regarding early families . Phoebe
