Hello everyone, Well, I've got a little more data to go on now than when I first joined the list. I've found my Adam GADDIS in the 1800 census for Orange County in New Windsor. Originally had been told he came to this country in 1801, so had never looked before. Anyway, now that I've got a town name, I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to any sources of information I might find this family in. He would have arrived in 1800/1801 and left for Delaware County, NY by 1810 at least. His wife's name was Catherine and in 1800 census he had two children. One male (John, b. 1798 in Ireland) and one female. I don't believe he would have owned land since he didn't own any until around 1817(?) in Delaware County. I will check out any films that the FHC has on Orange County, but am looking for what sources might be available in the county. He was also always heavily involved in the church wherever he was. I did check out the webpage for Orange County, but didn't see anything that seems it would hold anything for me. Any guidance appreciated. Patty Gaddis wgaddis@mediaone.net

Now that readers have had a chance to study the alphabetized version of the 1775 Assessment Roll for Orange County, I thought it would be useful to make the lists available in their original order so you can have an idea who might have been neighbors. I took great care on the names as my scanner and software were only about 98% correct. The same effort was not made on the assessments other than to correct obviously wrong information, so please don't expect high accuracy there. The valuations are in pounds, shillings and pence. Anyone have a rough idea of a conversion to dollars? At one time, a pound was about $5, but I think that was long after 1775. Tom Cornell District 1, p. 522 L. s. p. I have just seen a mention of Carpenter's Point. I can remember my Aunt Agnes telling me that Carpenter's Point had a connection with her grandmother. (Melissa Carpenter Taylor). Can anyone give me information on Carpenter's Point? Is it named after a Carpenter family? Thanks, Jim Taylor

Dear Or. and Ul Co. Folks, I just abstracted the following and thought maybe it might help some of you. I know that it is pretty messy and sketchy. Occasionally I receive an e-mail which does not from an address I do not recognize that does identify the place and person on the subject line. I will not open an e-mail that does not in some manner indicate to me that it is genealogy because of all the rumors, etc. re. viruses that can now enter via e-mail, not just downloads. I hope this is helpful to somebody. Phoebe
Does anyone here know about the Tryon or Tryons family in Orange County? Eliud Tryon and family appear in Coleman's "Early Records of the FPC" at various places. Apparently there were at least three generations named Eliud in OC in the 1700s. I am interested in (a) any Tryon real estate transactions, and (b) any Tryon connections to the Carpenter family. Hi Connie (and any other Smith researchers in Orange County), I am interested in whether you have any background information on your James Smith other than what you mentioned in your posting of December 2: "my ggg grandfather, James Smith was born in Orange County. He was born 1810. I don't know who his parents were. He married a Rachel Freese from Tompkins County and his first two children were born there in Dryden. I don't know when he would have left Orange County." I have a 5gr grandfather, Robert Smith (born 1725/26 in ?Scotland?, died 18 March 1830 in Madison County NY) who lived with his family in Montgomery, Orange County, NY prior to 1801. Don't know his wife, but have been told her name was Bethia.....also suggestion has been made that she was "of a prominent family in the area". <LOL> Robert's children were James (b. 1770, d. pre-1830, m. E. Denniston 1790), Jonathan (b. ca. 1772, d. pre-1830), Job/John (b. ca. 1774, d. pre 1830), Robert (b. ca. 1776, d. 1883, m. Bathsheba Barnes -- have much more on them), Mary (b. ca. 1778, d. pre Aug. 1827, m. Mr. Willson), David (b. ca. 1780, d. post Aug 1827), Samuel (b. ca. 1780, d. pre 1730), Caleb (b. ca. 1784, d. pre June 1830), Nancy (b. ca. 1786, d. pre June 1830, m. Mr. Graves), Abigail (b. ca. 1788, d. pre June 1830, m. Mr. Gillet), George (b. 1790/91, d. 1836, m. Sarah (Sally) Lyon -- have much more on them), & Phebe (b. ca 1792, d. pre June 1830, m. Mr. Mann). The fact that your James was born in 1810 eliminates him being Robert's son James, but I am wondering if he might have been a son or nephew of one of Robert's children. I know that George died of consumption, but I don't know about the others. Also, I can't PROVE that all of the other "kids" in that family actually died -- I just know they weren't mentioned in documents found relating to the dates shown. Would love to hear from other Smith researchers in the area.
Dear Listers, When I first began my Runyon and Tack research i cam across the Virkus set of Compendium of American Genealogy, which I have been repeatedly cautioned is partially based up family histories and not all validated. None-the-less, I found this rather interesting bunch of folks listed in Vol VI in pgs 181-182 listed with the DAVIS families: Family lines seem to be Davis, Dolar from Concord, MA , immigrant Fuller, Lt. Thomas prob. Salem MA Aart Pietersen Tack Fort Orange, NY Nicholas DePuy Jacobus Elmdorf Kool (Sarah Elmdorf 1749-1830 m Johannes Tack James Kerr Rhoades, Henry immigrant prob Lynn MA Brian Pendleton RI prob Vincent Runyon: John or Thomas; Vincent to Ontario Co; Hon Phillip Edington Runyan; Sarah Ann m Reuben L. Rhoades Several other surenames mentioned in within the various family lines. I had interest in these folks because I have ancestors from Philadelphia ( Nicholas Tack, b 1812 son of John Christopher Tack from Germany in 1792 m. Mary Anne Helfrich) whom I have never been able to connect with the Ul Co Tacks and also because I have NJ Runyon lines. Would be happy amplify this information if anyone is interested. Does anyone know where White Pigeon, MI is located???
I found the following reference to such a "pledge" re my ancestor, James WOODEN: "In April, 1775, an association was formed and a pledge drawn up of allegiance to the colonies in their purpose to oppose the arbitrary acts of the British Parli(a)ment, and among the signers of the pledge in Newburg(h) the name of James Wooden occurs." James WOODEN (born 1737) served in the Revolution in Captain Thomas Seward's Company, Colonel John Crane's 3rd Regiment of flying artillery, Continental troops, organized in Massachusetts.
I have the Social Security application for Clinton F. HARRIS, b. 25 March 1888 in Newburgh. Parents: George Washington HARRIS, Matilda KENNEY, employed by Middle Hope Sand and Gravel. Free for the asking and a SASE. He's not one of my guys. Elizabeth Harris Pope
Eager's "History of Orange County" (p.110) lists William Albertson and Joseph Albertson among "early tenants of the glebe" in Newburgh, apparently prior to the grant renewal of 1752. Does someone know whether any original documentation survives from such tenancies? Or if not "original," then some compilation of specific dates and places? (Also, does "tenant" in this case mean a renter in the modern sense, or is the meaning more like land-holder?) Robin
Does anyone know the names of Protestant churches in the Mt. Hope-Deer Park area from 1810-1826? Are records available, if so where? I think my ancestor David HARRIS lived there in that period. His son, Nathaniel Hill HARRIS was born there, according to his daughter's obit. There's a David HARRIS in the 1820 census and some deeds that also indicate his presence, but I'd like to see church records, too. Many thanks, Elizabeth Pope, Tampa, FL.
Is anyone on the list researching the MILSPAUGH family of Montgomery? I'm told there's a Milspaugh book with information on HARRIS and BARKLEY families that I research. I would love to locate a copy. My people are buried in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church and their farms in the 1850 Atlas map cluster around the Nathaniel Hill Brick House on 17-K. There's a Milspaugh farm close by and the name shows up on HARRIS deeds and wills. Would love to hear from any researchers. Thanks, Elizabeth Pope, Tampa, Fl.
Dear List, My Great Grandmother was Maggie Kate Carpenter. She was born April 12, 1876 or 1877. Whoever wrote the date wrote 1876 first then wrote a 7 over the 6. I am so grateful for the help I have received from you on the list who share so generously your knowledge. At last I feel that I can pass on to the list members information that was shared with me from another list with the permission to pass it on. This suggestion set that proverbial light bulb aglowing in my head because I personally have used the probate packet and got unexpected information. So from a more knowledgeable source than me I offer this. ----- Original Message ----- From: Family Tree Finders Sent: Monday, November 29, 1999 10:10 AM Subject: Family Tree Finders Monday November 29, 1999 FAMILY TREE FINDERS Monday - 29 November 1999 - ------------------------------------ Dead Men Tell No Tales, Or Do They? We have been so conditioned to believe that death signifies an end, that we do not always remember that the records generated at death actually signify the beginning; the beginning of your search for that particular line. When we are researching we work backwards. We will search for things like the death record to hopefully learn the date and place of birth and the names of the parents. However, there are other records generated at death that can be truly beneficial to researchers. I know you are sitting there thinking about wills. We all hope that we will find a will on our ancestor. However, sometimes a will may actually cheat you of valuable clues. What you actually want to search for is a probate packet or the probate records. This may include a will, but there are many other papers generated by the death of an individual and they can hold clues to the family members and names of others who had business dealings and contact with our ancestor. Why are these names important? Sometimes it will be the names of your ancestor's business associates or neighbors that you find in write-ups rather than the name of your ancestor. By familiarizing yourself with the others who lived in the community you will then be able to keep a look out for lots of different people. If your ancestor left no will, then his estate will be handled by an administrator. The court will appoint the administrator. Administrator bonds will list the name of the administrator as well as those individuals putting up the sureties. Very often the administrator was a relative. Other times it could be your ancestors primary creditor. In the papers generated by the sale of the property, you will very often find listings of neighbors who purchased various farm implements, food stuffs, or livestock. In the accounting of the estate you will learn who your ancestor owed money to and who owed him money. You may be able to find an indication of the request of dower for the widow. She was entitled to the house and one-third the land for her to use until she died or remarried. In some instances, you will see newspaper clippings or pages alluding to the mention in newspapers for the notification of heirs who no longer live in the area where your ancestor died. This is an excellent source of information for married names of daughters and localities for those children who you have lost track of. As you can see, while death may be an end, for genealogists it is very much a beginning. Rhonda R.
