Does anyone have access to the land records of Orange County, specifically Warwick area that can give me any information concerning any land records of Philip McCONNELL? Also, Philip McCONNELL (d. 1818) is listed as having served in the Revolutionary War, but National Archives have told me that they have no records, pension or land bounty? Mona in Indiana
I've been wanting to inquire about "Drowned Lands". Does this refer to swampy areas that were drained, leaving the rich soil needed to grow onions? When was this done? You can see below that they are referred to as drowned lands in the 18th century - was that before they were drained, but the people could see the potential in them? A name like "Pellett's Island", when there is no body of water - was this just some high ground in the midst of a swamp? Is there a geologist out there who can explain this part of Orange County - was it somehow a result of glacial action? Incidentally there is a recent book out on Wayawanda with lots of good info and photos. Hi List, Does anyone have access to the names of units from Orange County that served in the War of 1812? One of my ancestors, Samuel Jamison, has a War of 1812 veteran marker by his headstone and I'm trying to determine if he really served (or if the marker has been moved there in error). I found an index card for a Samuel Jameson/Jamison serving in a Capt. Clark's New York Militia. Is anyone familiar with this? I know I can send away for the file, but since there are so many index cards for people with this name, I thought I would try to narrow it down first. Thanks for any help. To: NYORANGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Cosman from OC Part 2 Hello Orange Co researchers, I am wanting to share the results of some of my research with the members of the list. I have been exploring several families that I am related to and uncovered a lot of data about Orange Co. citizens. One of those families is the Cosmans, who were pioneering citizens of Middle Hope (now Newburgh (Town)) in the 1700s (then in Ulster Co.) So this might make interesting reading for those interested in history as well. I'll try sending this in 2 parts, as I sent it last week and it never got on the list. It might have been too big. I'm hoping to learn more about my Orange County ancestors in the year 2000! I am researching the following names in Orange County: ALLISON / ELLISON in Goshen, Chester and Warwick in Orange Co. -- 1725 - 1840 DAVIS in Amity and Warwick in Orange Co. ca. 1750 - 1840 Isaac ALLISON, Jr. (b.1762; d. Mar. 15, 1825 in Orange Co., NY) married Mary DAVIS on June 28, 1785 at the Baptist Church in Warwick, Orange Co., NY. Isaac fought in the Revolutionary War. In his book, THE HISTORY OF THE ALISON OR ALLISON FAMILY IN EUROPE AND AMERICA A. D. 1135 TO 1893, Leonard Allison Morrison listed eight children of Isaac, Jr. and Mary (Davis) Allison. They are: Isaac III, Sallie, Nathaniel, Samuel, Mary, Annie (my G2 grandmother), Richard and Elizabeth. Mary (Davis) Allison moved with Annie and Elizabeth's families and other Allison relatives from Orange Co., NY to near Newark in Licking, OH about 1841. Mary died in Licking County on April 19, 1843. I have been to Licking Co., OH to do research and have a picture of Mary's gravestone which states that she died in her 79th year. That would make her birth year 1764. I do not have much information about Mary DAVIS' family. In his book, Morrison said that Mary's brother was Benjamin DAVIS. I have read that Mary's father may have been Gilliam DAVIS. If anyone else is researching these families, I will be happy to share information. Mary Allison Yonan
Greetings, My mother worked in a silk mill in Newburgh in the early 1900's. Does anyone know where I can get information on this subject? In my reviewing of various census for Newburgh I have found mention of a cotton mill but have not seen anything about a silk mill. I have the tools she used when she worked there, they had to have their own. I would like to find information to include in the family history. Thank you for any assistance you can give me. Would anyone happen to know where I could locate, "75th Anniversary History of Middletown Savings Bank," and "Old Orange Houses"? Also, "The Portrait and Biographical Record of Orange County? Thanks so much, Sharon HORTON, PERRY, KNAPP, EDSALL, KISHPAUGH
Can someone tell me where in Orange County are (a) Carpenters Corners (long since called Johnson's Corners, by some accounts), and (b) Golden Hill? Robin
A big THANK YOU to all of you who responded to my getting started in Orange County questions. Thanks sooo much for all of the web sites and helpful hints. I hope to visit Orange County soon, and I'm sure my research time spent there will be more productive due to your input. Lorie
Does anyone know where I can locate a complete listing of the 63rd New York State Volunteers? From the first formation until the end of the Civil War? The 63rd was an Orange County unit that was part of the Irish Brigade, if I'm not mistaken. I'm looking for my ggfather, Robert FITZGERALD, and would type this roster into a database and have it included in the web site that maintains the unit rosters of all units that were in the Civil War. Thanks Bill

Hello- I'm researching CONKLIN/HAWKINS/TWICHELL families of Orange County. I was wondering if there is a web page for the Orange County Historical Society. I'd like to visit and would like to know hours and research materials available. Thanks, Lorie
Charlotte: There are quite a few blanks that can be filled-in on the Bennetts in Orange County. Can you give a clue as to what you have or know so far? E.g., have you access to "Early Wills..." or any of the various "History of Orange County" works (Ruttenber, Eager, Headley)? Your posting seems to have an error, citing Abraham Bennett b 1742 as 3rd generation, with Abraham b 1715 as 4th generation. Also, it's strange (but not impossible) to have 3rd generations move from CT to Chemung and OC/NY, then 4th generation do the same thing, then 5th generation be back in CT. Are you confident of who's an offspring of whom? What's up? I have no Bennetts (that I know of), but am interested as an Abram Bennett witnessed my Carman Carpenter's 1811 will in Minisink. I'll be happy to pass along some references and info, but would be good to know first what you do-or-don't have. > Robin C. >
