Hello Ellen, This Owen line is a new one on me! I have a Jonathan Owen b. 1696 Southold, Suffolk Co., NY d. 1796 Mt. Joy, Orange Co., NY m. October 23, 1723 Bethia Terry b. 1701 d. bef. 1752 His father was John Owen b. c. 1666 Bristol, Gloucester, England d.January 07, 1736/37 Southold, Suffolk Co., NY this line goes back further, in England, not Wales. As far as I know, there were no Owens from Wales in Orange Co. in the early 1700s. Of course, I would be delighted to hear differently. What is your source for this Owen line, and why are you interested in them? Dear Wisner List, I am transcribing some old letters regarding the Wisner family. I have in the past always wondered where the information regarding John Wisner Jr.(John Sr., Hendrick, Johannes) and Mary Thompson's children came from. I now have at least on source that is not just in the "Wisner Book." I would like to hear from John Wisner, Jrs' descendants, particularly those of his son James Wisner who m Elizabeth Carpenter. My memory tells me that the DAR records (applications) and the will of John Jr. both list the children by his 2nd marriage to Sarah Hall but I could never find any source for the names of his children by his first wife, Mary Thompson. I also have information on the parents of Mary Thompson that may not be generally available. Would love for more of us to get involved with studying these folks. Phoebe in CA

Does anyone have information of the early Owen family that came from Wales in the late 1600 early 1700's There were 3 brothers Abel, Roderick, and Jonathan. Rumor has it that Abel and Roderick died on the voyage. They settled in Mt. Joy which brings me to another question, where is Mt. Joy? They emigrated to Perry City, New York around 1804. Ellen
I am looking for information on Patrick Smith b. 1860 Ireland. His parents are Terrence and Julia Smith, they immigrated to Camden NY in 1861. By 1884 they are living in Amsterdam, NY. Patrick appears in his mothers obit in 1920 as living in Middletown, NY and again in 1942 in one of his brothers obits. Would like any info on him, death, marriage, census, directories, etc. Thank you if you can help me. Toni Smith-Cannon
Hello Listers, Thought I would through out the names I am researching again.. CORNISH/JUDSON surnames. Don
Many Smiths of NYS were actually of the German Palatine SCHMIDT family (settling in Dutchess Co around 1710) or the Dutch SMIDT family (1600s in Manhattan). Do you have any more details on your Smiths? Susan
I am trying to locate relatives of the Smith families of Orange and Rockland Co. There seems to be two lines, which may be connected. I just can't figure out where, with the first one being Adriaen Lamberts Smidt/Smith (b. early 1600's) and John Smith, b. before 1738. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Barent Jensen Blom born c. 1611 had a son named Jan (John)Barentse Blom born c. 1644. Jan had a son named Barent Jensen Blom born c. 1671 in Brooklyn, NY. Barent Jensen had five sons Garrat, John, Abraham, George, and Jacob. These five sons had at least the following children named in a will and left land in Orange Co., NY : John, Gerrit, George, Abraham and Isaac. One of these five grandsons of Barent Jensen Blom II is probably the father of John Bloom born c. 1740 and died 1806 in Orange Co., NY. I am looking for any information that will help identify John Blooms father.
Dear OC List, One additional entry I just read the other day regarding the "drowned lands," came from "The Concise History of Orange County" by Ref A. E. Corning, Hope Farm Press & Bookshop, Saugerties, NY, 1993. It states "The text of this book is a reprint of a section of Southereastern New York originally published by Lewis Historical Publishing Company, Inc., in 1946. It has been completely redesigned and typeset with a new Index" (index created by Richard Frisbie). Chapter One is on Topography and mentions this area as follows: "Perhaps the richest soil in the county is to be found in the swampy tracts...Onions and celery are the usual crops. There is said to be around forty thousand acres of swamp land in Orange County. The most extensive of these areas is the Drowned Lands in the towns of Warwick, Greenville, Minisink, Waywayanda and Goshen, covering 17 thousand acres. In the middle quarter quarter oft eh nineteenth century this entire area was immersed under several feet of water held in by a natural dam...Cutting through the dam reclaimed the land. Greycourt meadows, covering 500 acres...extends from Craigsville to Chester. This land was so productive that in the session of the Legislature during the winter of 1799, a resolution was passed relative to draining and improving Beaver Dam meadow in the town of New Windsor. At that time it was called the "Wild Meadows." "We find that 40 types of soil are mapped in Orange County, and that they conform closely to the characteristics of the rocks from which they are derived by glaciation."
My Johnson ancestors were from the borders of Orange and Rockland Counties. They settled the Town of Johnsontown which was flooded to put in a Lake / Reservoir for the New York City area. I am interested in learning more on this area and my family. Fran (Lake) King, Attica, NY.

I don't know if this was posted - but here is some additional background information if you are interested. There is an article in The National Geographic Magazine, November, 1941, titled "Black Acres of New York" Quite interesting with some good pictures. Marge

Per his deposition to the will of my 5xGGF, Samuel Knapp, Moses Wisner resided in the town of Rose, Wayne Co., New York in March 1834. Presumably, he was living in Warwick, Orange Co. in 1815 when he was a witness to Samuel Knapp's will. Tom Cornell

Hi All! Wondering if someone local to Orange Co might help me. Neither my mother or I received a Christmas card this year from my great-aunt, Louis Cole and we're wondering if she might have passed away. [Can you tell we're a *really* close family?? <G>] She lives(d) in the Towne Terrace Apartments in Middletown. Her maiden name was Suffern and she was the widow of Alonzo Cole. Might someone be able to check this out for us? Thank so much! -Linnea Miller Annville PA
