    2. Mary Alice Thomas
    3. This reply is for Elizabeth Pope and anyone else who may be interested. An ancestor's name will be in the DAR Patriot Index only if someone has joined the Society on that ancestor. They are processing papers all of the time for New Ancestors. I hope this helps.

    1. Re: DC Research tips?
    2. The DAR Libe is definitely more user friendly. Especially now that you do your own copying (coin operated copiers). They have more than the LC Family History room - and the request cards have the problems you noted. They now have computer requests - but those also seem slow. The best hope there is to find a congenial desk person who will personally go find your request - - - - Do check the DAR web site to check operating hours - and their April closure for members only. 1. DC Research tips?
    2. I will be in Washington, DC for two days next week and would like to ask listers if I should spend the time at the DAR library or the Library of Congress or someplace else. (I've been to the National Archives branch in Atlanta, so my census research is almost completed.) Is the DAR library more user-friendly? I'm researching James HARRIS of Montgomery, (1748-1825) who fought in the 2nd Ulster Co. militia and Charles B. HAWKINS b. 1817 in Rhode Island to parents born in Rhode Island. He should have some Revolutionary War connections, though neither appear in the Patriot's Index. I have bad memories of the Library of Congress, submitting call slips and waiting for ages until the staffer returned to say the book was "out being bound" or "not on the shelves". Maybe things have improved since I last visited 18 years ago. I've been to the OCGS in Goshen and I own Ruttenber and Clark, looked at Eager and HEadley, so I'm interested in more esoteric stuff. Other listers might be interested in this, too. Thanks, Elizabeth Harris Pope, Tampa, Fl

    1. Allison Notes
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. Every once in a while I plow throught old files. Each time I do so, I find old info that is new (to me). Today I found a few of pages copied from the "History of the Alison or Allison Family...." (pp. 208-211). I had not even remembered I had such pages (and just a few days ago requested this Allison reference as if I'd never heard of it!). Anyway, my pages were copied from a volume that had handwritten marginal notes on it. I cannot vouch for the info on the notes--and don't even know whose notes they were--in case they have follow-up value to someone, here's what they say: 1. Hannah Jackson and Samuel Jones had a son ______ Alison Jones who md 1779 Mary Everett. 2. Wm Allison (son of Richard) md Martha Case Dec 22, 1724 (left no chldrn 1797) 3. Mary Alison md John Mc Neal Dec 24, 1780 4. Joseph McNeal son of John + Margaret Allison McNeal ____ Jany 1, 1778 5. Jane Allison md Increase Carpenter before 1766. 6. #1285 Phoebe Allison md Richard Jennings 7. Margaret (widow of Thomas Allison) md 2nd ______ Wood + had son. 8. Richard Allison (brother of John--Ed) "perhaps md Abigail Wisner.... 9. #1299 Bridget Allison md Michael DeKay. 10. Isaac Allison of Goshen adm. Aug 16, 1775 Goshen 16. Anna Allison of Warwick (Adm A-99) Nov 24 1795 (son-in-law John Blair named ltr admin) 17. John Wisner Allison of Warwick - will 1806/7 wife Anne ____ sister Elizabeth Smith [...undecipherable...] John Allison + Sally Ann Roe 18. #1312 Richard Allison married Anne KETCHAM (surname inserted) Separately, I happen also to note in "New York in th Revolution - Vol I" (J.B. Lyon Company, 1904) two Allisons listed as Enlisted Men in the Orange County Militia (Land bounty Rights)--Third Regiment; Allison Joseph, and Allison William. I have no idea whether all of this may be already known by Allison researchers. I suspect the annotated pages were copied from the research room at OCGS some years ago...but do not recall. I hope some of it may help someone. Robin

    1. Col. Patrick Mac Gregorie & Scotch Presbyterians ca 1684
    2. Sharilyn Whitaker
    3. Greetings from a new lister: Col Patrick Mac Gregorie/Mc Gregory brought a group of Scotch Presbyterians to early Orange County settling by 1684 at Plum Point at the mouth of Murderer's or Moodna Creek. His wife's brother, David Toshack was also a very early settler. This was the first white settlement in the area. Colonel Mac Gregorie/Mc Gregory, and after his death, his son-in-law Colonel John Evans, were well known in local history, being involved with large tracts of land. I am looking for the material on Colonel Mac Gregory/Mc Gregory and his family from Ruttenber and Clark's History of Orange County. Does anyone on this list know how I could access that source, or any other references to this family from any source. Many thanks, Sharilyn

    3. Harrison Nanny: I note your mention of a 200+ page Allison book. A Samuel Carpenter (1734-c1800), reported in "Carpenter Memorial" to have married Betsy Allison, was born in Jamaica but moved to OC "...on a farm about a mile from Goshen." Children given as Daniel, Samuel, Benjamin, William Allison, Martha, Mary, Margaret, Peggy, Polly, Abigail (with dates and misc bits on each). Does your book have further info on this Samuel and Betsy? Would you know the location of this farm about a mile from Goshen? Robin C. P.S. What's the title and author of the Allison book?

    1. Elizabeth Jansen Rizer
    2. rizerk
    3. I have just discovered that Elizabeth Jansen is buried in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Goshen, Orange co, NY. Her tombstone states the dates 1844 - 1873, and that she was the wife of Col. Henry Clay Rizer. I know that (Margaret) Elizabeth Jansen Rizer died 3 July 1873 in Eureka, Greenwood co, Kansas. My questions are: Who were Elizabeth Jansen's parents? Was her father perhaps Egbert Jansen? What was Elizabeth Jansen Rizer's relationship to her husband's second wife - she was Clara Isabelle Jansen, the dau. of Egbert Jansen. Clara Jansen and Henry C. Rizer married in Chicago and I thought Clara was from Chicago. Did she actually have ties to Orange Co, NY? Thank you, Kathleen Rizer

    1. Thompson Families
    2. Dear Researchers, I have been trying to understand the Thompson families that are in this area in the 1700-1800s for several years. I believe that there are at least two distinct family lines, but I also believe that it is quite possible that they are interrelated or intertwined by marriage, etc. 1. Does anyone know if a definitive work as have done to sort them out? If so, where could I find it. 2. Does anyone know if the Judge William Thompson (1700s) is descended from the Blacksmith Wm Thompson whom according to early deeds was given property as an incentive to settle in Orange co. in, say, the 1720s, by the town fathers? My particular interest is in the James Thompson who was the father of Mary Thompson (d. 1788) who married John Wisner, Jr. From other works, I know that the "other" Thompson family members also married into the Wisner-Post line. I am currently transcribing letter written by Dr. J.H. Thompson in 1895 who had married Adaline Post who was a desc. of the John Wisner, just mentioned. In his letters he mentions something to the effect that so far as he knows he is not related to the Thompsons who are of the the Wisner family.

    1. Rossville Cemetery Town of Newburgh
    2. Looking for any information on Rossville Cemetery. It is located on Rt. 32 in the town of Newburgh just before the Ulster Co. line. It is on both sides of the road. There used to be a church next door but it is now a library. I wanted to find out who I would talk to about the burial records. Have a relative that is buried there in 1958. Her name was Carolyn TERWILLIGER CORNELL. There are alot of TERWILLIGERs buried in this graveyard. Are there any TERWILLIGERs out there that would know how to contact someone in regards to the cemetery? THanks. Robin Newburgh

    1. Re: SMITH - VANDERHAYDEN, etal - Orange County, pre 1800
    2. Carol Jo Thompson
    3. I have an ancestor, ROBERT SMITH, who was in Orange County during the Revolution. The only record of that appears to be his signature! It is said he was born in Scotland and that all but one of his children were born in Orange County (New Windsor), but I don't yet know if that's fact or fiction. Robert's wife is shown in one note (totally undocumented, so have no idea of a source!) as BETHIA VANDERHAYDEN. Another note suggests Robert's wife was "of a prominent family in the community." Robert died in 1830 -- some say at age 105; others say slightly younger -- in Madison County NY. Children of Robert Smith who appear to have remained in Orange County into the 19th century include James, born ca. 1770 [probably the husband of Easter Denniston in New Windsor]; John or Job, born ca. 1774 [a John of this age, married to Hannah Thent, was baptized in 1817 -- also, there are references made to children of a John and Elizabeth Smith in New Windsor's cemetery -- are either of these Johns the correct one?]; and perhaps, but probably not, Robert Jr., born ca. 1776 [Newburgh Burying Ground shows a child belonging to a Robert & Jane Smith died in 1838, but since our Robert Jr. died in 1813 and his wife was Bathsheba, this can't be our Robt. Jr. -- although it might be one of his nephews]. Other children of Robert Sr's, thought to have been born in Orange County (New Windsor) include: Mary [thought to have married a Willson], David, Samuel, Caleb, Nancy [thought to have married a Graves], Abigail [thought to have married a Gillet], George (I know what became of him!), and then Phoebe [married a Mann] who was born in Ulster County (Montgomery). These children were born between 1778 and 1792. Does anyone recognize any of the folks mentioned above? If so, and you can enlighten me further, I would love to hear from you. Does anyone know if there was such a person as Bethia Vanderhayden and if so, anything about her? Thanks for any details you might have. In return I'll be happy to share what I have. Good luck in your research.
