The Theodore Snedeker mentioned above was likely the Theodorus Snedeker listed in The Book of Snedekers as having married Derike Vliet 16 November 1729. They had ten children, all bp. at the Tappan RDC. Theodorus was said to have been sheriff of Orange Co for several years, and thereafter a member of the colonial legislature. It seems likely that your Deborah/Dorothea was actually Derike, in that she outlived Theodorus, which pretty much rules out a second wife. As to Barent Blom/Bloom, there was a Barent Blom who married Femmetje Snedeker (b. abt. 1673), an aunt of Theodorus. Whether they were one and the same Barent, I can't say for sure. 1. More old deeds Vol C. LDS films
    2. Dear Folks, I am sending extractions that I made about 10 years ago. Many of the dates were difficult or impossible to find and names to read. Here they are with all the warts on them. I selected the ones that I felt might be helpful to my research so they are heavy on the Wisner, Carpenter, Thompson, Jayne names. Ihave several more vols if folks are interested. Any surename that I could find listed in the deed, grantor, grantee, neighbor/border, previous owner, wit, signatures and judges were extracted. Unfortunately some dates are day written others day recorded. The number refers to the page number when I could read it. At the time I abstracted them I was woefully ignornant of the old names and the films were generally very dark and difficult to read, for that reason, I am sure there are many spelling errors. None-the-less they may be of interest to some folks. 413 Feb 2, 1791 Children of Helena Scott, late of NY m John R. Peter R. 2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Hi Listers, I am searching for the marriage of Wiilliam Bruce and Ellen Hancon/Hankins about 1845 in New Windsor and the baptism of their twin sons Alfred and Francis Bruce in 1846. Ellen Hancon/Hankins first husband John Hancon died between 1838 - 1840 probably in New Windsor and I would like to know where he was buried. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who may have some information or connections to the Bruce's or the Hancons/Hankins (the name is spelt either way). Best Wishes, Ros Dunnico, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

    3. Dear Linda, If memory serves me, Smith's Clove is the former name of the town now known as Monroe in Orange County. Again to quote Wilfred B. Talman's "How Things Began ... in Rockland County and Places Nearby" regarding the word 'clove': "It is hard to realize now what a considerable obstacle a hill was in earlier days. In this county (Rockland) hills were not only heavily wooded but rocky as well. Unless there was good reason to get on the other side, nobody blazed a trail over them. Any who did cross the mountain took the easiest route through what was locally called a clove. In other parts of the country it is called a pass, gap, or notch. Because of our language heritage and our isolation, we have retained the word "clove" among our local place names." So "The Clove" was the easiest way to get from Rockland County to Orange County. Basically Route 17 and the NYS Thruway follow this easy route, as does the Ramapo River. It's not a town, but a way through the mountains. 3. Just by chance I found more information as I was browsing through "Southeastern New York, A History of the Counties of Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Putnam", copyright 1946, volume II of three. "Opposite the Erie Railroad Station in Sterlington is Smith's Tavern. In the hall of this old home may be seen copies of letters written June 9 and 11, 1779, by General Washington from 'Smith's Tavern in the Clove.' Washington himself planted the cottonwood tree growing in the dooryard. East of the house is a slave burial ground, bearing dates on the stones around the period of 1770 to 1776." This was written in 1946 - can someone tell us if the building is still standing? 3. >From Wilfred B. Talman's "How Things Began in Rockland County..." "Another crossroad tavern, frequently the headquarters of Gen Washington, was John Suffern's, which faced the present triangle where the monument in Suffen stands. It was new in Revolutionary times, opened in 1773. Any traveler who missed it, however could find something to wet his throat at Wanamaker's on the old Albany Post Road. Sloat's could be the next stop for a thirsty man, and there was SMITH's farther up the Ramapo Pass, and no doubt others on a road heavily traveled by stage coaches ind ays when the republic was young."
