Phoebe, Thanks for the reference. I hadn't heard of this book, but I'd love to see it. Another book of interest here is "A History of Waverly, NY" by Charles L. Albertson, 1943. Steve Sawyer
Hi List, I'm hoping to get some advice or suggestions on cemeteries in the city of Newburgh and vicinity. I'm looking for the burial place for a Daniel Leslie. He died in 1875 at his residence in the city of Newburgh. His death certificate does not give burial information. I believe he came here directly from Ireland. He lived in the same place on Grand St for about 20 years so it seems likely he would have been buried in Newburgh. I have not been able to locate a death certificate for his wife as yet so that has been of no help. His daughter married a Presbyterian minister so it is likely Daniel was also a Presbyterian. I looked at the information on cemetery inscriptions in the Newburgh library and found nothing. Any clues as to what cemetery he may be in? All suggestions greatly appreciated. Look in Long Island for the Coe name.
I am also seeking information on burials in the Newburgh area. Looking for the burial place of Reverend Silas LEONARD. He was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Goshen. His 1764 will says he was "of the Precinct of Newburgh, in Ulster County". Some of the land that he owned was on the Hudson River. I would also like to find the date of death and the burial place for his widow, Elizabeth (HARRIS) LEONARD. She was baptised in the Reformed Dutch Church of NYC in 1715. Any suggestions on where to look for their burial place?

Hi Orange Co. List: In response to a couple of the questions about J. H. French's "Gazetteer of the State of New York, 1860", it is a, reading from the title page, "A Comprehensive View of the Geography, Geology, and General History of the State, and A Complete History and Description of Every County, City, Town, Village and Locality, with full tables of statistics" . It was originally published in 1860 and then re-reprinted with an index of names in 1983. It is organized by county and gives the earliest information about each county, whether it was one of the original ones, whether it was taken from another county, etc. It gives the names of the earliest inhabitants of each area, what the topgraphy was like, what the businesses were, etc. It has wonderful footnotes and, personally, I think it's one of the most valuable tools we have for research in NY prior to the Civil War. Good Morning Marilyn and Tom... Can either of you tell me a little about this book? I might want to purchase it... Thanks. Jackie

However, you can buy a new one through Hopefarms Press at http://www.hopefarm.com/ for $60.00, according to the website information. I purchased my copy for the same price about three years ago and its is invaluable. I know that a cousin of mine purchased a used copy a few years ago and it did not have the index--while it was an "antique" it would have had more genealogical value if it had the index! Can anyone tell me what a used 2 volume book set of French's 1860 NY Gazetter is worth? Are they available new and if so, at what cost and where? Thanks -Tom
Dear John and Robin, I am not doing much good these days for several reasons, one being my printer is not working, power failure, bumped the scanner which in turn bumped the printer, so my mail box is filling up with stuff and I am getting even more behind. Anyway, I think I have not shared with you fellows that I found on the Onondaga Co. deed index, John and Abigail Carpenter, so know that they were there, or at least had property in Onondaga Co. Also the NY book re. Rev. War soldiers land grants (or whatever the appropriate word is) indicated that John Carpenter had REQUESTED land in Onondaga co. Now, I don't know how big Onondaga co. was at the time. I would guess that this is John who married Abigail Moore, dau of Benjamin Moore and Lois Cory of Or. Co. Her id, at least as far as her father's name is concerned has been proven by a mortgage doc where she is named after the death of Benjamin Moore. (This was probably on the mortgage which I tried to put on the lists.) Anyway, as AB Carpenter book indicated she remarried after John died a Rev. Woodruff, as I recall that is also noted on the mortgage. I still can't believe that this John died in Chautaqua co. I believe he is mixed up with another John, maybe the John b. Or. Co. 1830. Phoebe
Hello, Could anyone tell me if either of these places can be reached on line or via e-mail. *Orange County Genealogical Society *Newburgh Historical Society I am interested in getting the following books; RECORDS FROM NEWBURGH, NEW WINDSOR, AND OTHER NEARBY TOWNS VOLUME ONE RECORDS FROM NEWBURGH, NEW WINDSOR, AND OTHER NEARBY TOWNS VOLUME TWO Thank you, kindly Marlene Hartle Researching , surname "IRELAND"
Many thanks to all the listers who suggested sites to try to find a street address for the elderly lady in California who knows the whereabouts of the Barkley family bible. I tried bigfoot, anywho, aol white pages, etc. and they all give the same results as switchboard.com -- just the name and phone number, no street address. There are public record search companies that go through tax records, etc. for a fee, but I think I might try writing a letter to Fairfield, Ca. first. It's a city of 60,000 but the woman's surname is unusual, so I'm putting my faith in the good old U.S. Mail. Thanks again to all who made suggestions. You folks are the best. Does anyone have these two books? Wondering if someone would be willing to do lookups (just 2-3) in indexes. Many thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: Daniel H. Hi Maureen, In response to your PS, the name Coe is a surname, and was often used as a given name if an ancestor or friend had the surname. For example, from my tree, I have John Coe Owen b. 1806 who had a maternal great grandmother named Ruth Coe. I also have two Bradners with the first name Coe, but I can't find their Coe ancestor. I've located the family bible of my 4th ggrandmother Margaret BARKLEY, (1775-2 Dec. 1839), wife of David HARRIS (1775-4 Feb. 1845) of Montgomery. Only problem is the ailing, elderly lady in California who owns it, won't tell me who in her family inherited it. When I telephoned her, I think she thought I was a telemarketer, and she almost hung up on me. I have the woman's married name and city, but not her street address. I'd like to write a letter, but I can't find her street address. Does anyone know a site where I can plug in the surname and city and come up with the street address. SWITCHBOARD.com doesn't list the street -- that's where I found her phone number. I also tried ATT information, and her number is unlisted there. My Margaret is buried one row back from her Samuel in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, and I think they are brother and sister, or perhaps cousins. I'd love to find out her parents' names. Many thanks for any tips. Elizabeth Harris Pope in Tampa
Maureen, To make the circle complete, I'd like to know who COE VAN BRUNT is. Looking for father of Ruth Coe who married John Carpenter 1735, according to the AB Carpenter book. Phoebe
Hi all, I'm looking for someone to go to the Newburgh Library and photocopy ,for me , the Historical papers 1-20 published around 1900 by The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands. I was sent a list of local researchers, which was very out of date, none of the addresses or phone numbers is good. I would appreciate any suggestions!! Sharilyn
