    3. Hello Howard, In the history of Orange County they list a James Simmons, page 529. under Cornwall and Monroe . In 1769 Selah Strong, William Thron, Henry Wisner, jr. and Silvanus White, four of his Majesty's Justices, declared the indenture of the apprentice, James Simmons, void, by the ill-treatment of his master, John Tuthill, and discharged the apprentice. and on page 577 a Benj. Simmons is listed under Cornwall and Monroe A list of men taken at Fort Montgomery under Col. Woodhull's Regiment. In Portrait and Bio. record of O.C. NY pg.212 Mr. Demerest has been for years an enthusiastic and prominent member of the Masonic order, having been initiated into the secrets of this fraternity in March 1869, when joining Goshen Lodge no. 365. He later became identified with lodge no. 711, which was organized at Chester. July 27, 1871, but which is now stationed at Monroe. Of this he has been Warden, and for several years was Master. In 1881 he was appointed District Deputy of the Tenth Masonic District by Horace Taylor, Grand Master, and on the expiration of his term of office, two years later, was made his own successor by J. Edward Simmons, Grand Master. yours in genealogy Joanne -----Original Message----- From: Howard Swain [mailto:hswain@ix.netcom.com] Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2000 8:15 PM To: NYORANGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Henry SIMMONS -- searching for his parents Hi all, I am searching for the parents of Henry SIMMONS. According to his obituary, which appeared in the Garden Grove (Iowa) Express: He was born in Goshen, NY on May 11, 1804. At the age of 14 he left home and went to New York City where he remained 38 years chiefly engaged in the mercantile business. In the spring of 1856 he moved to Republic, Ohio. In March 1858 he moved to Garden Grove, Iowa. It appears that both Henry and his wife were members of the Episcopal Church at the time of their deaths. His gravestone in Garden Grove has the above birth date and has death date of 19 Mar 1882. According to _Ancestors and Descendants of Captain Frans Janse Bloodgood, Vol I Revised..._ by George M. Bloodgood, 1980: Henry married on 12 Aug 1835 Louisa Bloodgood, who was the dau. of John Bloodgood and Rachel Simmons. In NYC directories I have found a Henry Simmons with a drygoods store at 84 Hudson (at Franklin) and 100 Hudson (NYC) from 1837 to 1855. This is only about 8 blocks across town from where John Bloodgood had lived at 22 Mott, according to the Bloodgood book above. I've checked _Early Records of the Presbyterian Church of Goshen 1767-1885_ and found nothing. In the 1810 NY census for Orange Co., I found several Simmons families, but none appeared to be in Goshen. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Howard hswain@ix.netcom.com

    3. Do to the help of a kind member of another list, I have recently found out that a family I thought was from Ulster Co. had their first child in Tuxedo, Orange Co., NY. Perhaps this is why I have been at such a stalemate in finding further information. I have James FITGERALD b. 1880 & Sarah "Sadie" Luticious TOMPKINS b. 1880 who lived most of their married life in Greenfield Park, Ulster Co., NY. Their first son, Isaac FITZGERALD was born in Tuxedo, NY before 1903. Their second child Chester FITGERALD was born June 3, 1903 in Ulster Co., NY. Other children: James David FITZGERALD b. Nov 27, 1910, Franklin "Dutch" FITZGERALD b. aft. James, and Eliza FITZGERALD b. aft. Franklin. The family story is that Sadie TOMPKINS was disowned from her family for marrying James FITZGERALD because he was a farmer and considered beneath her. Any connection with anyone out there? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Carpenter, Carman, Coles, Doty, Dun, Runyon
    2. Dear Orange Co List, I know that some of you have seen the Carpenter related letters. I just composed this and sent it to one such researcher. As it involves so many families, I decided to put it on the list to see if anyone else might be interested. I was originally sending data on one Jesse Coles, Oyster Bay, related to Carpenters. This letter gets complicated because I strung a tail to it, which I don't expect you to worry about! But, keep in mind we started out looking for Carman Carpenter when we go into this Carpenter >Albertson > Coles question! I have not ruled out the possibility that these unruley Carpenters, both Carman and Moses, of Orange Co. and who seem to be related to the rest of the Or. Co., via Jamaica or OB Carpenters (we know related to begin with), are not descended from Hope Carpenter's NJ unidentified line - (where there are more Carmans and Moores than you can shake a stick at). My guess is that you already have this, but this is an extraction of the CD abstract: 10:0184 Joseph Coles, OB, Qu. Co. 12/jan/1780 Wife: Freelove Sons: Jesse, Stephem and Robert Dau: Achsah Craft, Elizabeth Feeks, Anne Mott, Zipporah Coles, Sarah Willis Wit: Daniel Albertson, David Doty, Caleb Cole proved 31 Dec. 1781 Note: One of the documents that I have found that pertain to my Moses Carpenter is an abstract listed in the Or. Co., NY wills book, published by the OCGS, Page 6 Liber A page 57 PHINIUS DUN of Goshen Will made Dec. 26, 1788 Probated Jan. 9, 1789 Wife - Anna Dun Daughters Zeruiah Dun, Elizabeth Dun Executors - Anna Dun, Moses Carpenter Witnesses : Calvil Shepard and Ezra Doty I have tried to identify all of the individuals named above: 1. There are a couple Phinius Duns and I have not been able to nail this one down. The Duns were very interrelated with the Suttons, Dunhams, and other NJ families from whom my Moses Carpenters first wife, Elizabeth Runyon was probably related. 2. I have found a Colvil Shepard husband of Anne Owen 6 (Ebenezer Owen m. Temperence Helm 5, Temperance Woodhull 4 m William Helme, Temperance Topping 3 m Richard Woodhull, Sarah White m John Topping, John White m Anne Cooper) in the RootsWeb's WorldConnect project. >From my Wisner line, I connect at the Temperance Topping generation (assuming the above to be correct) but that doesn't help me with identifying the parents of Moses Carpenter or explain his role as executor of Phinius Dun will, that I can now see, anyway. I noticed when doing the Albertson research for Robin that I was running to Woodhulls, OB Carpenters, Coles, and Dotys. (which of course, made me think of this will) 3. I have not identified Ezra Doty Strangely enough a couple coincidences interest me. 1. Phineas Dun lived near Joseph Carpenter at GreyCourt 2. I began this quest trying to find out the relationship (if any) between Phineas Dun or his wife Anne (unidentified, possible Burgess) and found 3. Jeremiah Dun, Piscataway, NJ, (had to be a relative of Phinias above, possible father, brother, or uncle) m. 1. Sarah Hull 2. Margaret Carman (probably no children), but with Sarah Hull he had: Phineas b. 1734 Elizabeth b 1735 m a FitzRandolph Naham b 1737 Moses b. 1742 Philip b 1744 Benjamin b 1746 Hugh b 1740 d. April 4, 1826. He married Abigail Carman (Piscataway, NJ where my Elizabeth Runyons father was from) and they had Carman Dunn b. 1764 Sarah Keziah Ursula Abigail Then we have a Hugh Dunn who married Rachel Moore, and it just goes on and on! 4. Carman Carpenter whose identity we were trying to establish in the first place!

    3. I have a partial copy of a 1810 census page from Minisink. The column headings are missing from the copy. Following the main "NAME" column, there seem to be 5 columns, then a "double line" dividing the field, followed by 5 more columns to the right. Can someone tell me what the ten heading categories are? (Perhaps the first column is adult males; but why would so many--5 of 14 on this page--show no adult males for household lines that are clearly headed by an adult male? Maybe it's adult males OTHER than head of household??) Thanks for any help. (I realize I should know these things by now!) Robin P.S. This very same 1810 page includes a line for Alex S. Young. Does anyone know about him? Any Young researchers here?

    1. John Carpenter Smith
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. Hey, Phoebe: Great digging on those abstracts! You've answered a few items for me...like who was Mercy Carpenter in the Ulster Cty 1790 census? (Ans; widow of Wait Carpenter.) It's not clear to me just how you traced "John Carpenter Smith" to John Carpenter #362 (will dated 2/16/1778, proved 2/19/1779, NYHS Vol3 p183). What's the connection? His brother Wait married a Smith, all right, but that's the only Smith connection I see. (Real men don't often adopt thier sister-in-law's surname.) What is clear, however, is that John #362's father was in fact John #95, just as you surmise. At least, it's that's how ABC has it (and it all fits). Now here's a wild idea: Do you suppose "John Carpenter Smith" was transcribed wrong?...maybe it should be "John Carpenter, smith." John #362 was in fact a gunsmith and blacksmith. If this John really is the right guy, this explanation suddenly seems more plausible than a name change. (It would help to see the original handwritten census page. Does anyone here know how to get that?) Robin
