In 1870 he obtained a clerkship in a dry goods store in Middletown, and two years later brought out the old furniture store of Hiram Brink. A year or two later he purchased the long-established crockery house of I. O. Beatty and combined the two concerns, which had occupied adjoining buildings at no's 44 and 46 North Street. 3. pg. 720 of Portrait and Biographical record of Orange County,NY Vol.2 Henry Seacord, of the town of Hamptonburgh, was born here September 19, 1829, and is a son of Wilken and Jane (Moorehouse) Seacord. The father was a native of Westchester County, NY and of French descent, the grandfather,J. Abraham Seacord, being a native of France. In the parental family were seven children, Alfred F., Martha, Henry, Lydia A., Wilken, and Almira. Wilken Seacord, the father of our subject, was a blacksmith by trade and came to Orange County in 1823. Locating in Graigsville, where he remained until 1829. He then went to Lincolndale and purchased a small tract of land, which he improved and on which he remained until his death in 1861. Our subject learned the trade of blacksmith under his father, and when twenty-one years of age took charge of the shop, in which he worked until 1891. Mr. Seacord was first married in 1853 to Miss Ann Goble, and they had four children, Oscar, Hulda, William H. and Wilken. The wife and mother died in 1880, and December 30, 1885, Mr. Seacord married Miss Elizabeth Corwin. There are no children born to this marriage. About 1887 Mr. Seacord became interested in insurance, and since 1891 has given his entire time to that business. He is the agent of some of the best fire and life insurance companies in the country, and is at this time prepared to place risks for his friends and neighbors. He is also engaged in the real-estate business. Politically he is a Republican, and in 1876 served his town as a member of the board of Supervisors. He is a man highly esteemed for his many excellent qualities of head and heart. hope this is useful to you. 1. Pine Hill Find
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. My favorite and most intriguing cemetery find (of my recent Orange County NY visit) was in the Pine Hill Cemetery. There, at the top of the piney knoll of the oldest section, stands the smallish stone of Gabriel Van Cleft. A primitive design is inscribed at the top, forming a semi-circle of seven "spokes" suggestive of a sunrise or sunset. Below that, roughly hewn it says "Died Gabriel; Van Cleft; November 22; 28 of his age; 1825. Gabriel was a son of Benjamin Van Cleft and Abigail (Carpenter) Van Cleft. Gabriel's father Benjamin died young (1806), probably about 25-30 years old. Gabriel's mother Abigail was a daughter of Carman Carpenter and Mary (Webb) Carpenter. Carman Carpenter names Abigail (remarried to a Young) and her minor children (including Gabriel Van Cleft) in his 1811 will. Now here's the intrigue: Immediately next to Gabriel's stone are these: Levi S. Young (1810? aged 28?) Susan Jane Young (1813? aged 26?) then a space then a stone far too worn to read. Now, Abigail's remarriage to a Young couldn't have been before she was widowed in 1806, so what was this "other" connection between Young and Van Cleft? And where are the other Youngs (including Abigail) buried? Further intrigue is the finding that the immediately adjacent row of stones in this little section of the old piney knoll has: Isaac Carpenter (1818, aged 70) Susannah Carpenter (1860, aged 84) Moses Webb (1805, aged 25) Jonathan Webb (1801, aged 7_) Penelope Webb (1801, aged 67) This Isaac is clearly the Isaac Carpenter #298 in ABC's Carpenter Memorial (p.83), and Susannah his wife. (Names and dates all match.) Jonathan and Penelope Webb are parents of Carman Carpenter's wife, Mary Webb. With Carman's grandson Gabriel Van Cleft and the youthful Youngs buried together with Isaac and Susannah Carpenter, and also with Carman's in-law Webbs, the implied connection between Carman and Isaac Carpenter grows. They cannot be supposed merely as Minisink neighbors. But just what connection was it? If anyone here can fill-in more on any of this, I'm all ears.... Robin

    1. Goshen Carpenter House
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. In the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Dec 20, 1896 is the story of heirlooms from the 1700s found in the Goshen house of Solomon (and then James) Carpenter. These artifacts and documents are prominently mentioned in Bachelor and Carpenter's "Ancestors and Descendants of Col Solomon Carpenter." At the time of the Daily Eagle story, the house was in the hands of Mrs. Mary Peloubet and her daughter Miss Fannie Peloubet, formerly of Greene Avenue in Brooklyn (NY). Does anyone here know what became of them? Have the letters and documents been copied or recorded anywhere? Did these Peloubets have descendants, and were some materials passed to them? What's the scoop? Robin

    1. Martins of Orange County, NY
    2. I am a newcomer to this list. I am trying to track my great grandparents back to Germany. They were: - Paul MARTIN (born in Germany 1858; died in Warwick 1922)) - Pauline BEHNKE (born in Germany 1859; died in Warwick in 1933) They emigrated from Germany in 1884 with their two eldest children: - Adolph MARTIN (born in Germany in 1881; married Cecil BROWN; died 1948) - Emma MARTIN (born in Germany in 1882; married John DOLSON; died 1951) They had a farm in Sugar Loaf. At some point, they were joined by Pauline's mother, Wilhelmine BEHNKE (born Germany 1824; died in Warwick 1897). Their other children were: - Anna Juliana (Jul) MARTIN (born in Chester in 1885; married Otto GESELL; died 1980) - Carl MARTIN (born in Chester in 1886; died 1913) - Henry MARTIN (born in Chester in 1888; married Marion CARPENTER; lived in Monroe; died 1966) - Augusta Louise (Louie) MARTIN (born in Chester in 1891; died 1977) - Herman MARTIN (born in Chester in 1893; married Helen ROBERTSON; died 1917) - Frances (Mitchie) MARTIN (born in Florida in 1896; married Charles BACHMAN; deceased) - Eleanor (Pete) MARTIN (born in Chester in 1899; married Harry FARRELL; deceased) I would be very interested in hearing from anyone else researching this family. 1. Noah or Adam?
    2. Robin Carpenter
    3. Dan Burrows: I woke up this morning with that Noah-vs-Adam-or-Adah Carpenter on my mind (from the Case Cemetery stone). Although I wrote yesterday that I was "confident" the name is NOT Noah, I suddenly have doubts. The stone inscription is in upper-case letters, so it's possible the top of the left upright of an "N" might look like an "A," and the right-side upright of an "N" might be worn away. Also, a weather-worn "D" and an "O" might look similar. So I suddenly find I can talk myself into "NOAH" even though at the time I was really confident it was ADA(M?) or ADA(H?). There's also a question as to the year. My reading of the stone was that the death was 1817. Your info from Coleman has it 1847. Aside from my possibly mis-reading the stone, it's also possible (one supposes) that Mr. Coleman mis-read something in his transcription. (Do you know what dox he was working from?) Or maybe Adam is there separatelt, with an unreadable stone, and Adah was his wife! (Seems unlikely, as the dates are too coincidental.) Also, checking my volume of Amos Bugbee Carpenter's Carpenter Memorial, I find a Noah Carpenter (#852) said to have died in Homer NY (where's that?), in March 1847!!! Carpenter Memorial also has a Noah Carpenter (#2335) said to be born in Orange County...but wrong dates to be this Case Cemetery preson. CM sometimes gets individuals mixed up, so there is some (SOME) possibility our Noah is one of these Noahs...if it's a Noah at all! I'd really like to know what that stone says; name and date. Might you be able to go take a new look at the stone sometime? It's at the rear of the lot, leaning against a tree. It's not hard to get to now, as I've whacked away lots of brush, and the leaves aren't out yet. Robin

    1. PURDY, George WC (or Rome??)
    2. William Staples
    3. Rome, NY is not in Orange County. Rome is near the city of Utica, a good ways from Orange County. Lots of Purdys in Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester Counties. In the 1850 Census of Orange, lots of Purdys, no George One George in Ithaca Township, Tompkins County. One George in Adams Township, Jefferson County. In Ulster County, one George in Marlboro, George H in Hurley, George L in Wawasing. Westchester County a George W in Cortlandt Township Any Orange County families need to consider Ulster County also. The Newburgh area of Orange County is just South of Marlboro in Ulster County. There was much spreading out of families across the 'border' in that area. There are no large collections of gravestone inscriptions for Orange County however there is a large cemetery right below the Orange/Ulster border (Cedar Hill Cemetery) containing both Orange and Ulster County folks. If you write to them they will look up a name for you in their records. 3. Hi Maude: Many thanks for your great tip about the Case burial plot on Sarah Wells Trail, across from Viking Hill Farm. I spent about 5 hours there last week, with work gloves, loppers, crow bar and writing pad. I managed to cut away enough to get to the stones, and I pried-up all fallen stones I could find. (There may be some few still hidden under the leaves etc, but I got most of 'em.) Where possible, I leaned stones against a log or a tree. I copied down all the family info I could decipher. Some of my reading differs from yours. If you get a chance to go back, maybe comparison of our interpretations will yield a resolution. Lester's SS-5 gave his parents as Aaron R. PURDY and Clara BERTRAND (Skipping a bit) the 1880 put my Aaron, with recognized siblings from obituaries, in the family of: G.WC Prudy (b.c.1837, NY) and Sarah (b.c.1837 CT). The Saginaw Courier Herald has an Obit for Geo.W.C. Purdy saying he was born in Orange County NY. Several of the oldest PURDY obituaries also named Orange County NY, including one that listed "Rome, NY" as the birth place. My questions: 1) Does anyone have a George W.C. PURDY anywhere in Orange County NY? (either born, residing, paying taxes, marrying (preferably a Sarah), having kids, or anything? 2) Are there OTHER PURDY family in Orange County NY? 3) (And is/was Rome a town in Orange County?) Or whether or not any records are available from the church itself? I see nothing in LDS. I had a relative who was a member there ca 1830-1840. This church is near Goshen and Ridgebury, as I recall. I cannot in good conscience punish the entire genealogy community because of the actions of a few dishonest people. My mom made me a plaque that really made me think.
