I am looking for any old cemeteries in the Cornwall NY vicinity that goes back to abt.1814. I have ancestors with the name Joseph and Sarah JONES that died in Cornwall in 1814 and 1826. I would like to find their graves ,if possible. They had 6 children: Susan abt. 1783, Catherine abt. 1784, Samuel abt. 1788, Benjamin abt. 1789, Walter abt. 1794 and Phebe abt. 1795. If anyone has this family line or knows of any old cemeteries that would have alot of Jones burials, let me please know. Sarah JONES maiden name was JENNINGS. Her father, Samuel JENNINGS, was originally from Bottle Hill NJ. She was one of 9 children. One brother, David JENNINGS b. abt. 1769, was married to Margaret EDMONSTON whose family was prominent in the area. If anyone can follow these lines let me know. Thanks again. Thru the kind help of Rose also of this List I have found out more about the death of my ancestor George Greatorex of Highland Falls, Orange Co. in 1910. According to the Orbit, George was found in his room at the "Sweezy Barracks". My guess is that it was some sort of Hostel for possibly Railroad workers, which he was. Can anybody throw any light on this?? Protrait & Bio record Orange County, N.Y. Page 433 & 434 William W. Rumsey, This well known resident of Newburgh is alike prominent in business, musical and social circles, being in the employ of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, a member of Moscow's Orchestra, and Generalissimo of Hudson River Commandery No. 35, K.T.. He was born at No. 11 High Street, Newburgh, May 14, 1850 , and is of English descent. His father Alfred T. was born in the town of Monroe, in 1804, and grew to manhood on the farm of the grandfather, Jeremiah. Soon after his marriage he came to Newburgh, and continued to reside on High Street until his death, in February, 1878 , at the age of seventy- four years. The mother of our subject bore the maiden name of Catherine Alexander, and was born in Little Britain, Orange County, being a daughter of James Alexander, an old settler of that locality. Concerning the family history , mention is made elsewhere in this volume, under sketch of James K. Alexander. She was reared to womanhood in Little Britian and has spent her intire life within this county. Having been born in 1813, she is now advanced in years, but retains to a large degree the possession of her mental faculties and physical strength. The parental family consisted of three sons and one daughter, all of whom are living. They are named as follows: James, who is a conductor on the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad; William W. , of this sketch; Frank M. , who resides n Newburgh and Anna, Mrs. A.E. McCrea, a resident of New Rochelle, NY. The subject of this sketch was reared in Newburgh, and in boyhood attended the old high school, now known as the Second Ward School graduating from it at the age of fourteen. In 1864 he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, beginning at very low wages and in an humble position, but in 1866 he was promoted to a clerkship, and has continued with the firm since, one of their most trusted employes. In this city, in 1869, Mr. Rumsey married Miss Margaret White, who was born here, and is a lady of culture. In 1871 Mr. Rumsey joined Newburgh Lodge No. 309, F. & A.M., in which he served as junior Warden. He is also identified with Highland Chapter No. 52, R.A.M., in which he held an official position for many years. As above stated, he is the present Generalissimo of Hudson River Commandery No 35, K.T. He belongs to Mecca Temple of the Noble Mystic Association he is an active member, and is serving on one of the committies of that organization. From the fall of 1868 until the spring of 1872 he was connected with the Columbia Hose Company No. 2, being it's secretary for two years. Politically he is an ardent Republican, always pleased when his party scores a success. Since 1871 he has been identified with musical organizations, and now plays the drum in Moscow's Orchestra. He is particularly interested in matters relating to music, and is a good judge of the art.
Here's a follow-up on the finding of Noah Carpenter's grave stone in the Case Cemetery on the Sarah Wells Trail in Goshen: I find several entries for the baptisms of several of Noah Carpenter's children in Coleman's "Early Records of the First Presbyterian Church at Goshen." Here they are: Noah, born Aug 25, 1777; bapt Oct 25, 1777 Joseph, born Jul 16, 1779, bapt Aug 29, 1779 Mary, born April 11, 1782, bapt June 16, 1782 William, "son of Noah Carpenter & Unice his wife" b. Dec 10, 1784 bapt Oct 16, 1784 (Bapt SAME DAY; Birdseye Case, son of David Case, b. 8/1/1785) Edward Ely, bapt Aug 5, 1825 William Belknap, bapt Nov 1, 1828 Virgil Case, bapt Aug 10, 1833 Margaret, bapt May 2, 1835 Mary Elizabeth, bapt May "4 & 5" 1839 The top four entries have no explicit Case connection...but the baptism of son Noah on same day with Birdsey Case is suggestive. Does anyone know whether elder Naoh's wife "Unice" was a Case girl? The latter five entries are a full generation later than the first four, and 4 of the 5 children have middle names. These differences suggest that these five are the offspring of the SON Noah who was baptised in 1777. The mother of Virgil Case Carpenter was probably a Case, we can assume. Also, the names Virgil and Belknap appear in the Case Cemetery. (Belknaps were numerous to the northeast of Goshen, and Newburgh and New Windsor.) There is also an entry, under "Register of Members" section, listing "Noah Carpenter, from Newark, May 26, 1804." (Does anyone here know what "Newark" that would mean? Newark NJ?) It's hard to know if this was a "new" Noah Carpenter entering Orange County, or what. Robin

I have very little information about an aunt that scooted years ago. The only information I have on her is that she was born about 1924 and her name was Omeda (Peggy) Eckerson/Gras(s) and she married William Dietrich, who was in the service and last we knew of her was that she living in Tarrytown, NY in 1944. He was in the miltiary, dunno which branch. So, as confusing as that may sound... I suspect she officially went by Omeda Dietrich, calling herself Peg or Peggy informally. Does anyone have a clue where I would look? I further assume they were relatively newly married, say within a year or so. So I figure there wasn't any property since they didn't come from riches. Any ideas? hints? clues? thanks very very much. cindy

Could someone tell me if the Enumeration District Number for Newburgh varies from one census to another? HeritageQuest has the census on CD's but they cannot tell me which ones I need to order to cover Newburgh for the various years. They want me to rent a microfilm to get these numbers however, I do not have a microfilm machine to use to view the film. The years I am looking for are 1840, 1880, 1910 and 1920. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you for any assistance you can give me. Marge Clark mclark@eticomm.net
Hi List, I'm looking for information on the family of Henry ROSS, b. about 1815 in Ireland, and lived in Newburgh. The census indicates he was a miller. Henry's first wife was Elizabeth JAMISON (1814-1844) and they had at least two children Maria Elizabeth (1839-1849) and Margaret Jane (1842-1865). Henry's second wife was Jane C. (last name unknown) and they may have had seven children. Thanks for any help. Susan Elliott __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Am looking for further information on a Samuel Gardner and, hopefully, more clues to his Parents. I just returned from a trip to the National Achieves to research this line. While I did not find Samuel Gardner's parents, I did obtain some clues. Any help in deciphering this will be appreciated. My Samuel Gardner was born around Jan 26, 1780 in Orange or Ulster CT, NY He married Hannah Ellison and ended up in Hector, NY (Schuyler CT). Following info is from National Achieve's War of 1812 info. Samuel was in the war of 1812. He mustered in at Newburgh, NY OR Wallkill on/about Sep 1st or 7th, 1814 and served 3 months and 5 days in Cpt John Dunning's company which was part of a Militia Regiment commended by a Col. M. Smith. He served his time on Staten Island and was honorable discharged Dec 8, 1814. Info in Hannah's letter (where this info is from) seemed to suggest he may have been in the Militia before this as there is a sentence that reads ..........."Samuel"...."was called out by requisition of the governor of New York as well as the whole militia company to which he then belonged and that he served for the term of three months and some few days" .... The letter also gives Hannah/Samuel's wedding date Feb 8, 1799 and said they were married in Wallkill or Newburgh (two separate letters from Hannah) by a M. (or MR) Smith, a Presbytarian Minister. The letter also serves up ALL 13 kids names AND birth dates. They are as follows Elisha, Born 3/26/1800, Ann Eliza 4/9/180-, George 6/24/1804, Owen 1/17/1807, Mary 5/13/1809, Issac 5/9/1812, William 10/13/1814, Westlake 12/1/1816, Harriet 3/11/1819, Abraham 5/15/1821, Silas 12/4/1825, Daniel 3/13/1827 and Hannah 2/13/1830. All information was on the back of the first page of a 1811 bible that I assume was Hannah's/Samuel Family bible. It had been ripped off and sent to the War Department by Hannah. There was also a letter from a Mr. Joseph Gardiner of Newburgh, NY who, in 1939, was writing for information on my Samuel from the War of 1812. (See Above). He also wrote a letter in 1937 for information on Revolutionary "Gardner's" who he said were members of his family. These Revolutionary Gardner's mentioned in his letter was Samuel Gardner and George Gardner...both from Newburgh. The Revolutionary Samuel served in Cpt. Samuel Clark's company in Col. Hasbrouck's NY Militia Regiment in 1777 TO 1784 while George (who was a Sgt.) served in Col. William Malcolm's NY Regiment.. There is also information on a Silas B. Gardner who was in the War of 1812 This Silas Gardner married an Anna Weed (She died Aug 14, 1859) and he remarried a Catherine Wilson on June 21, 1860 in Newburgh. Silas B. Gardner died at Newburgh August 28, 1875 at the age of 83yrs, 5 months and one day) (born around 1792). Both Anna and Silas are buried at St. George's Cemetary in Newburgh. It's pretty clear that all 4 Gardner's are related but not sure how. Any help in figuring this out would be appreciated..... Mike Gardner
