    2. Oliver Popenoe
    3. The Taylors, Poppinos, Armstrongs and Jacksons all lived around each other a mile or so SW of Florida in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. There is still a Taylor Road there, running between Jessup (formerly Armstrong) Road and Old Ridge Road. I know a good bit about the Poppinos Armstrongs and Jacksons and other families there but not the Taylors. Mary Poppino (b 1750s, d 1853, married James Jackson who died in 1807. Afterward Mary lived with various Taylors so she must have had a dau who married one but I have no information on any of her kids. I have a sheet from the Elizabeth Horton collection at OCGS that says William Borland (Capt) of Ulster Co (1703-1779/80) m1 Rebecca McNeal; m2 Tabitha McNeal (b 5-28-1724, d 6-20-1815). Among their children were Jean who m Francis Armstrong, and Charles who m Rebecca McNeal Oct 28 1779 (6 children}. Others mentioned. So I assume your James Taylor was from the same neighborhood. Do you have any records of a Taylor marrying a Jackson or other info about the Taylors in that neighborhood? Maybe we can help each other. 1. RE: Surnames - TUTHILL, SMITH, HOLLY (by smickley@ptd.net)
    2. Oliver Popenoe
    3. Dear Jeannie (or should I say Ms. Ology?) The Hollys were from Stamford, CT and came out in 1714-15 along with Seely, Knapp and other families. A brief article by Roger Joslyn (which I copied but failed to note in what journal it appeared), reports the original will of Samuel Holly of Goshen Precinct, found among the Orange County Court of Common Pleas and other court papers, Box 10424815, County Clerk's office storage. Samuel was born in Stamford, 20 Oct 1704, son of John (Samuel, John). In 1714 his father, John Holly of Stamford, shipwright, purchased a tract in the Wawayanda patent and presumably came out the following April as you note. Samuel wrote his will in 1748, dividing his farm between his sons Ebenezer and Joseph, and also mentioning sons Ezekiel, Salvinis, Samuel and Noah. John Holly, in 1723, had deeded part of his land to his sons, 71 acres to Noah, and 91 acres each to Samuel and Bezaleel, all of Goshen (Deeds B-328-30). In 1764 Ebenezer, weaver, quitclaimed his share to his brother Joseph Deeds C 172). A list of the inhabitants west of the Highlands in Orange County in 1715 included John Holly, Ebenezer Holly, Noah Holly, and Benjamin Holly. Jeanne Majdalany's The Story of the Early Settlers of Stamford, CT 1641-1700, gives an abbreviated genealogy of the Holly family. John Holly, b 1685, d 1724, m 1708 Abigail Hoyt. No brother Ebenezer and no other Ebenezers shown. Majdalany does not list John's children. So where does that leave us. One possibility is that Ebenezer gave his age wrongly at the boundary hearing, or that it was later transcribed wrongly and that he was the son of Samuel. More likely he could be a brother of Samuel but not included in father John's 1723 deed, perhaps because he had already been taken care of. Would a 17-year old be listed among a handful of male inhabitants west of the Highlands in 1715? Can't say. There is a Holly genealogy (maybe more than one) which I don't have. The family has been pretty thoroughly researched and a look at one of the compiled genealogies might give you your answer. Sorry I can't tell you who Ebenezer's father was, but this might help you on your way. FREEGIFT TUTHILL was definitely MALE, (as were all others of the same given name). << Who were Temperance SMITH's parents?>> Temperance was a daughter of JAMES SMITH and JERUSHA TOPPING. <Does anyone have more information on Ebenezer Holly?> >From "Proceedings to determine boundaries of the Wawayanda and Cheesecocks Patents", Independent Repulican Printing Company, Goshen NY 1915, p. 17: Ebenezer Holly, of Wawayanda, age 87 (in 1785), "came here with his father in April 1715." Therefore, Ebenezer was born approximately 1698. Unfortunately, his father's name is not stated, and it doesn't say WHERE they came from. Happy hunting, Jeannie-ology : )

    1. Early Orange County Wills (I do lookups)
    2. For those of you who are not able to travel to Goshen, here is information on how to obtain photocopies. You absolutely MUST know what Liber and page(s) to request. Therefore, I suggest that you first contact me for a lookup from: "Early Orange County Wills" (V1 1731-1788, V II June 27, 1787 to Dec 31, 1830) , Orange County Genealogical Society, 101 Main St, Goshen, NY, 1997. Before I am bombarded with requests, please make special note that the book has wills from 1731 through 1830 ONLY. To obtain a photocopy of the Will(s) from Volume 2 only, write to the Orange County Surrogate's Court, P O BOX 329, Goshen NY 10924. The fee for copies is $.50 per page. Be sure to specify the name on the Will, as well as the Liber and page(s) you are requesting. They MUST receive a check for the EXACT amount and you MUST include a stamped self-addressed envelope. From my own experiences, I have found that Wills are often more than one page. Therefore, you might want to request the KNOWN page and the next one too. At $.50 each, you can hardly go wrong and it will save you time and money in the long-run! Best wishes to you as you research your ancestors. Jeannie-ology : )

    1. Going to Goshen Information
    2. Paul emailed me asking me for info about Goshen and this is what I sent him. He thought it might be list-worthy. I also wanted to make sure I gave him the correct info. Does anyone have anything to add or correct? Thanks. <<The wills are located in Surrogate's Court which is across from the First Pres. Church. If you get off 17 exit for Goshen and follow signs to Goshen, you'll be on Main street (it looks like you're coming in through the back side of town but it quickly turns quaint). There is a 5 way intersection after about a 1/2 mile or so. The First Pres. Chruch should be on the right. Take a 90° right and then the next left onto Park Place. Surrogate's Court is the first building on the right. When you walk in the front door, there is a policeman on duty and directly across from him, on your right, is the kiosk with the index ledgers. They are by year and then alphabetical. Write down any numbers for the will you want and then follow the counter to the left and end. There is a little station there with current indexes and a basket with forms and pencils. You fill out the slips and then give them to the clerk behind the desk. She'll bring the actual volume or will out and then you can look at them, have them copied, etc. They were very nice in the office and helped me out a lot. BTW, on the other side of the church is the OCGS building, the yellow one with big white columns. If you were to walk down a block or two, on the same side of the street (not the direction you drove in but, the other way), you will come to the library. They also have a local history room (open business hours) and microfilm of local papers. In front of the church, kind of to the right and across the street, is the Courthouse annex. >>

    2. Wantage Recorder, Friday, May 24, 1912: "Mr. and Mrs. Hosea J. HARDEN and family, of Quarryville, were going through Chester, N. Y., with their auto on Sunday when they met a New York party in an auto near the fountain in the village, it is at a street corner and neither of them saw the other until they appeared by the fountain. Before the autos could be stopped they collided nearly head to head. The New York man's machine was the heaviest and Mr. HARDEN's sustained the damage of a broken wheel and a number of bent rods. Luckily the speed had been cut down so that no one was hurt. A garage received Mr. HARDEN's machine for repairs and he and his family were taken to Middletown by the other party when they took the evening train for Quarryville." Mona Bross Hylton, Indiana
