I don't think there is any way other than finding the E.D. for Middletown. There is a publication that describes E.D. boundries (I think it's microfilm T1224). Hopefully someone on the list will know the E.D. for you. Scanning even one full roll is pretty heavy stuff that makes you wish those enumerators had paid mor attention in their penmanship classes. Sue, I too would like to take advantage of your generosity. Could you please check the graveyard records for an Esther Ray between 1790 and 1800? Her family was Presbyterian in New Jersey, and she appears in Montgomery Town, NY in the 1790 Federal census, but is gone by 1800. Thanks, Jacqui

Sue, Thanks for the offer of lookups. A check for any Staples names would be greatly appreciated. I have a John and Linda Staples who owned a plot in Cedar View but were never buried there. I don't know where to look next but any Orange County Cemetery would be a possibility. I have transcribed the graveyard records of the church onto disk. The booklet was put out around 1950 and contains burials from the 1700's. I will do lookups or send you the document as an attachment (word on a mac). It is long so will take some time to download. My ancestor was the pastor there for 40 years. If any one has any information on Rev. Andrew King or his family, I would love to have it. sue
I order census microfilms from National Archives. I want to order the 1910 census for Middletown, NY. As I look at the catalog from the NARA, there is no index listing for Orange Co., NY using the Soundex or Miracode. The index for the census schedules, lists three reels/rolls for Orange Co.: Roll 1059, 1060 and 1061. Does that mean that one has to read through all three rolls to find Middletown in Orange County? Is there one of you that can tell me which roll/reel to order for Middletown? Appreciate any and all help. Thanks. Mona Bross Hylton, Indiana

A question. In the History of Orange Co. by Ruttenger, it stated that a lot of vital records were either moved to or from Montgomery. This was to keep them from the British. The book stated that many were lost or misplaced. Would anyone know if this was true? I have been looking for records from the 1750's for Newburgh. I have found alot of Rev War stuff, but little birth info. I would like to know about records from Little Britian Presbyterian Church, Goodwill Presbyterian Church. Covananter- was this a Church or just a cemetary? Thanks for any help. Sarah Beattie

Hi Ruth, I have a WOOD connection in my ancestry. Hannah WOOD married Benjamin SAWYER. Her father was Major John WOOD, who was well-known in the area as the only survivor of the battle of Minisink after it was attacked by Joseph Brandt and his Indian raiders. My page for Major WOOD is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/3076/JohnW.html. Its possible that Major WOOD was your Levi's father, since one of my sources indicated 2 additional sons for which I have no names, and the dates would be about right. Major WOOD was b. 1743, so Levi would have been b. around 1770-80 or so, which would fit with Levi's son being b. in early 1800s. Sorry I don't have more, but its a start. Of course, I'd be interested if you could find a connection. Steve Sawyer in AZ
Can someone here give me a mailing address for the Ridgebury Presbyterian Church? My ZIP code directory doesn't show Ridgebury; should I use the Slate Hill ZIP (10973)? Robin
The next old landmark was the Old homestead of the Seybolt family on Seybolt Avenue, in which the old court roomis still undisturbed and the original structure in good state of preservation. In front of this home is a row of stately maple trees, set out years ago by a descendent of the John K. Seybolt, now of Johnsons, and one of the four remaining Charter members of the Otisville Grange. This is now the home of the Hull family. A reading was given, Alfala, by Walter Sowash. The program closed with a vocal selection, Wall, I'll be Swanned, by Reeves Seely. An invitation was received to visit Hamptonburgh grange at Neighbor's Night, September 13,. The second Flower show under direction of the service and hospitality committee will be held Friday, August 26. skipping a few lines The annual Grange picnic will be held Wed. Aug. 24 at Westbrooks Grove, on the Huguenot-Port Jervis state road. This is an all day affair with games, music, bathing and various amusements to suit the individual. Fred Long, John Baker and Mrs. Ellen Dally are committee in charge. Prizes will be awarded the winners of the several events. Plans are being made for the carnival and chicken supper, to be held Wed. Sept. 15. Fifty members were in attendence at the meeting, in spite of the intense heat. One hundred fans were found distributed about the room, a gift from one of our lastest members, Walter K. Merritt. The annual inspection of the Otisville Juvenile Granger will e held Friday night, Aug 19, with Miss Natalie C. Barns, County Juvenile Deputy, inspecting.

middletown Times Herald Record Aug. 10, 1938 Local History the theme choosen for the monthly farm and home hour brought to light many items of interest to members of Otisville Grange at their meeting Friday. Seven farms in his locality which have been in possession of some member of the immeddiate family fifty years or more were recorded. Those of Lewis H. Mapes , Irwin K. Hawkins, Mrs. Edna VanEtten, Harold Corwin, Orrin Pierson, August Raap and Reeves seeley, several have been in the possession of the family more than 100 years entitling them to the distinction of being called Century Farms. The History of the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, later sold to the Otisville Grange, was given by Mrs. Florence Writer. Next was the essay, composed and delivered in the Otisvile High School at the 1935 graduation by Donald Patterson and repeated friday night by him-Leaves of History from the pages of Orange County disclosing many a rare bits of past doings in this section. Among these were the findings of the huge mastodon on the MITCELL-DODD farm and the purchasing of the same by Yale College. This specimen of Orange County is standing in the Peabody Museum in New Haven. Another incident was finding the earthen pot of counterfeit coins, an imitation of Spanish coins, brought to light by the late Charles LOOMIS, When ploughing near what is now the home of Mrs. Mary GREENLEAF. end of para, more to come Joanne

Would anyone have any info about Stephen Cooper of Goshen? He was listed in the 1820 Goshen Census pg 313 and 1830 Goshen pg 275. I don't have access to these census to see if they had any children. I am looking for a Stephen Cooper who was married to Sarah Ann Morrison (she born in NY). They had a least one son, John S. Cooper who was b. 31 March 1832 in Sussex Co. NJ. Stephen Cooper is not listed in Sussex Co. census for 1850. Any help on this family will be greatly appreciated as Stephen and Sarah Ann (Morrison) Cooper have been my stumbling block. My brick wall is my gg grandfather, Levi Benton WOOD. He was supposedly born in Orange or Ontario Co, NY in 1810 or 1811. Family lore says that his mother was "one of the BENTON girls" named Mary or Thankful; that his father was Levi WOOD; and that Levi Benton was a 'woods colt." Also that Levi Benton was one of fourteen children. Levi B. was married 3 times that we know of--Isabella CRIST, Malinda GIRARD and Mary E. DOOLITTLE LYNCH. Does NY have a bastardry bond? Does anyone have any suggestions or can anyone please visit NY archives for a lookup? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated by my entire family, especially my 94-year-old father. Ruth
