Dear Pat, Good news...That probably was just not the right book! A couple of days ago I was looking for something amid some photocopies I made from a small section in another Orange County history book the last time I visited a library there. One of the pages shows early land patents and shows several sections as belonging to "Thomas Ellison and Lawrence Roome or Roonie." One of them is dated November 14, 1750, another contiguous parcel is dated November 12 but my copy is too small to read the year; a third is a short distance away is not dated. If you want to look on "today's maps" they are all located inside a ring of towns that are still there by the names of Bloomingburg, Crawford, Searsburgh, Scotchtown, Montgomery, and two of them look they are in Bullville. For further location reference, they are near the Shawangunk River (pronounced "Shon-gum" and also called the Shawangunk Kill, it's Dutch name). They are in the Evans Patent, next to the Wawayanda Patent and the Minisink Angle. My best suggestion would be to try to get a copy of "History of Organce County New York 1683-1881," and inside the cover page reads "History of Orange County, New York, with illustrations and biographical sketches of many of its Pioneers and Prominent Men." Compiled by E. M. Ruttenber and L.H. Clark, Heart of the Lakes Publishing, Interlaken, NY 14847, 1980, Volume 1 and II. I would try to scan and send you this page but it isn't a very good quality as I only copied a small section that covered the area where I grew up. Short-sightedness on my part! Hope this is helpful. Good wishes, Gail

Folks, I would like your help please with information about the Plains Cemetery in Mt. Hope, NY. I would like to find out if my ancestor Shaw Young 6/6/1778-3/13/1834, his father William Young 3/13/1749-2/22/1802 and his mother Elizabeth Chapman 11/15/1752-1838 and perhaps more of the family that I do not know about might be buried in Plains Cemetery or in other area cemeteries. Bob Raven told me that Shaw Young was probably from the Deerpark section of Mt. Hope, NY. He also said that Greenville is close to Mt. Hope. I would apprecaite any and all help and advise that you can give me. The Young monument in Deansboro Cemetery in Deansboro, NY says that Shaw Young is buried in Mt. Hope, NY. I would like to find out where he is buried, more family history, if there are more Youngs buried there, etc. Thank you all for your help. I appreciate it!!!! Hope all of you have a nice week. Susan DeHart :) Is there an internet address for cemeteries and/or how to find them, etc? The internet has so much information that perhaps there is, just wondering.

I just had some fun on this site. Below are some of the folks from Or. and Ul. co. I only searched a few surenames, have fun, you might find something. Phoebe http://users.itsnet.com/~pauld/newyork/ Index of Marriages and Deaths in New York Weekly Museum, 1788-1817 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- The New York Weekly Museum, also known as the Impartial Gazetter and Saturday Evening Post, and Ladies' Weekly Museum, was printed in New York from 1788 to 1817. It contained foreign and domestic news, a "Poet's Corner", occasional short stories, and a "Moralist" section. This index is a compilation of the Marriages and Deaths recorded in the journal and contains about 20,000 entries. Information concerning cause of death, next of kin, place of marriage, and occupation are also listed. Photocopies of many of the New York Weekly Museum publications are available for a $10.00 fee. (Publications are 4 pages long. Marriages often do not contain any additional information than is listed in the index. Death notices sometimes have additional information concerning the death. There is no way for me to know before making the photocopies if additional information is listed. Also, the quality of the photocopy cannot be insured. I make the best copy that I can from the microfilm and I try to make the information concerning the marriage or death as legible as possible.) If you would like a copy, please send mail to: Gordon Harkness 772 University Village Salt Lake City, UT 84108 Include in your request the name(s) from the index, the date of publication, and a $10.00 check for each publication requested. Hello List! Have been brickwalled on a family for many years now and since going online a short while back I have been searching and searching for info on them. It is now time to post to the "experts" and hopefully someone will recognize the names. Am searching for a JAMES OSBORN(E) and his wife ASENATH BRADY. According to LDS, JAMES was born 13 Aug 1748/1750 Orange Co, Ny. Asenath BRADY appears to have been born Abt1752 in Orange Co.NY Married:1773 Orange Co, Ny Parents names unknown. This family was found in Luzerne County, PA 1800 Census. Information states they moved from NY to Sussex County, NJ where it appears their children were born: James 1774, John 1776/77, William 1778, Peter 1780, Henry 1782, Hannah 1784, Polly/Mary 1786, Betsey aka Lydia Elizabeth (born 1788 but this must be an error She had her first child in 1797). Do these names sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone tie them into an Osborne family in those areas? Any help, info or direction would be greatly appreciated! A week or so ago I posted a request for a look up for my Great grandmother and SKS replied that there was no entry in the Whig Press Marriage Notices 1851-1865. Her name was Ellen White and she was born about 1835. She was "a staunch Catholic" all her life and on her children's baptisims her name was entered as Ellen White: (Helene) Orange County New York. I have very little knowledge of registrations of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the 1800's in New York State. Were births circa 1835 required to be registered or would the only records be baptismal records. If so are there any achives of the Roman Catholic church available to the public. Any information will be most gratefully received. Pat
I have been going through the 1900 census for Newburgh. I have found an unusually large number of listings as "Partner" for relationship to head of household. It is not a wife nor husband. There are numerous listings identified this way as singular addresses. Does anyone know what this would mean? Marge mclark@eticomm.net
Dear Penny, The Concise History of OC, by Rev. A. E. Corning, originally printed as part of another book in 1946, this book was printed by Hope Farm Press in 1993, listed one possible place to start looking... not for Chamberlin or Kinnan/Canaan--but for Little. A paragraph on Pg 22 says there are still old houses in New Windsor* built before the American Revolution, most later quartered army officers. Stonefield was erected in 1745 by Rev. John Little, located north of the village of Salisbury Mills on the road starting at Little Britain* Church, running south to Washingtonville.* It goes on to say that it has been known as Moffat's Academy for a long time, named for a Dr. John Moffat, who married Little's daughter, served as pastor of Good Will Church*, and after retiring conducted a school in the upper rooms of the house. Later Dr. Moffat recorded that on Feb 15, 1779, DeWitt Clinton, (later Governor of NY), studied Latin at Moffat Academy. *(these places still exist and are all adjacent to Newburgh) Hope that gives you a lead to follow up. I am trying to research my brick wall. I am looking for any information in regards to the surname PEEL. In particular, I am looking for a Henry and Margaret PEEL that emigrated from Ireland with their son Henry. I believe that their was at least two more sons named William and Richard. William was a moulder by trade and Richard was a blacksmith. Margaret was born abt. 1795. She died in Newburgh in 1873. Her husband, Henry, I believed died in June 1871 but I can't seem to find a death record of him. He was living in Newburgh and he was buried thru St. George's Church in Newburgh but Newburgh doesn't have a death certificate. I am trying to connect the three brothers. Henry Jr. was married to Mary Ann and they had a daughter Margaret abt. 1842. She married James Brown in 1857 in St. George's. Richard was married to a Susan and William was married to a Mary. Richard died abt. 1891 in Newburgh and William died bef. 1897 I think in Newburgh. His widow moved to Yonkers after he died. If anyone knows anything abt. these families please contact me. Thank you. Dear Carpenter Folks, I was just poking around e-Bay and found that the Col Soloman Carpenter book, Goshen, Orange Co, NY was listed for sale. Just go to the e-Bay main page and type in "genealogy, Carpenter" and it will be listed. I am not selling the book and have no interest in the sale (except of course, if one of you find you are related to him and can solve my Moses for me) :-) Phoebe

page 858 Portrait and Bio. record of O.C.N.Y. John B. Bradner, a merchant of Bellvale, was born in that village in 1849, being fourth in the family of ten children born to Adolphus B. and Pauline Weymer) Bradner. The fathe has been engaged in carpentering the greater part of his life, having learned that trade when a youth. Although past his fourscore years, he enjoys fair health, and makes his home in Ballvale, where he always resided. The mother died May 12, 1888. (book published 1895) The Bradner family is an old one, and can be traced back a number of generations. Rev. John Bradner emigrated from Edinburgh , Scotland, about 1721, and was the first minister in Goshen. His son Colville owned what is now the Henry A. Benedict Farm, near Stone Bridge. In 1790 he also purchased of John Taylor, of NYC, the farm at Bellvale now known as the Bradner homestead. His son John, a direct desendent of the Rev. John Bradner, was the grandfather of our subject, and was one of ten children born to Colville Bradner and wife. He always resided on the Bellvale purchase, and by his marriage with Mary Robinson thirteen children were born. The subject of this sketch grew to manhood in his native county, and attended he district school of Bellvale during his youth. At the age of fourteen he began working on a farm, being thus employed for four years. When eighteen years old he commenced clerking in the general merchandise store of A. J. Burt, at Bellvale, and after remaining in that capacity seven years, was taken into partnership, business being conducted under the firm name of Burt & Bradner. The partnership continued for two and a half years, when Mr. Bradner withdrew from the firm, built a store of his own and engaged in business at Greenwood Lake. His was the first store at that point, and there he conducted a successful trade for nine years. At the end of that time he retired from business and built a comfortable and commodious home at Bellvale. In October 1890, Mr. Bellvale re-engaged in business at that place, occupying the store in which he had formerly been in business. He carried a fine stock, suitable to the trade of his locality, and is reconized as one of the wide-awake business men of Orange County. He is the owner of a finely productive orange grove in Florida, where also, in connection with L.Y. Jenness, he is interested in real estate. In 1873 Mr.Bradner was united in marriage to Miss Clara R. Hunt, daughter of Nathan and Esther (Rhodes) Hunt, natives of Orane County. Their union was blessed by the birth of four children, only two of whom are know living, Ida Beatrice and Pauline, both residind with their parents. In politicd Mr. Bradner is a democrat, and is at present the efficient Postmaster of Bellvale. In educational matters he has always taken a deep interest. He was elected to the office of school Trustee, filling that position for three years satisfactorily, and is now one of the Trustees of the warwick savings Bank. As a business man he has been very successful. (There is a portrait of John B. Bradner on page 859) pg. 646 ( this is only part of the bio) under Col. John D. Wood b. 1827 in Orange County, son of Alfred & Rosetta Dunning Wood , grandson to John Wood who was one of George Washington's Minutemen. Col Wood in 1856 married Miss Mary L. daughter of Moses and Elizabeth (Valentine) sawyer all natives of this county. Col. John D. and Mary L. had 8 children, three are deceased, those living are are named as follows; Jessie, wife of C.V. Puff, of this county; Arthur S., who married Miss Emily Mapes, a member of one the leading families of the county, and who now makes his home in Philadelphia, Jefferson County, N.Y.; Lillie May, wife of Verner M.
