Dear Folks, I sent the Carpenter/Wheeler question to my Carpenter of the Carpenter rootsweb list and got the enclosed reply, but first: I have an interest in this because I am trying to prove/find the identity of the parents of my elusive Moses Carpenter, who was reported to have been the son of John Carpenter and Ruth Coe, of Jamaica to Goshen, Orange Co. NY. AB Carpenter book cites a 1735 marriage, but does not prove sources. OK, abstract of Orange Co. deed May 1, 1792 MOSES CARPENTER, yeoman and wife HANNAH (nee Smith) of Warwick to JOEL and NATHANIEL WHEELER, yeomen of Warwick. Property located near Mt. Eve, late of JOHN WISNER, deceased, par of estate of said JOHN WISNER, NE corner of JW, deceased, commonly called Lewises (?) farm. Witnesses: ABSOLON TOWNSEND and WILLIAM THOMPSON Recorded 4/19/1793 The mortgage for this property was Orange Co. Mortgage Vol A pg 353,4and5. June 2, 1783 From MOSES CARPENTER of Goshen and HANNAH, his wife, to CHRISTIAN MORRIS, JACOB MORRIS, and SARAH MORRIS of Or. Co. (My research indicates that JANE EVERETT was their mother and she was had previously been married to JACOB MORRIS, (m 1759 Trinity Ch. NY,NY, IGI) and .Chauncery Ct. NY, Guardianship, Sureties at that time: ABSALON TOWNSEND and THOMAS MOORE). I believe that JANE was the sister of MICHAEL DEKAY. Could these be the same CARPENTER, WHEELER, AND TOWNSEND families? Anyone know the connections/differences? Phoebe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Dear Phoebe, Hello to your NYQUEENS Forum from the CARPENTER Forum. http://users.hol.gr/~mkyritsi/index.htm Dear Orange Co. Researchers, While poking around on various sites on the internet I stumbled (dumb luck) across this site. It is a site that describes the above listed STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE and from the name and site indexes I can tell it includes Orange Co, NY Stewarts. You will need to spend some time with the site. It has several interesting and helpful indexes and lists the libraries where copies of the magazines can be seen. I am sure it will be helpful to you. I found a couple of Carpenters whom I believe were married to Orange Co. Stewarts and others also. FYI only, Phoebe in CA

Mona ~ I looked at your query and I kept thinking to myself.."Where have I seen that Dunn surname in relationship to my Chamberlain's in Newton, Sussex Co, NJ?" I looked up some papers and sure enough.. A Captain William Dunn was commanding officer of my gggg grandfather, John Chamberlain who was in the War of 1812. He was listed as an Ensign with the First Battalion, of the First Regiment, Second Co, Sussex Co. Militia. This probably doesn't help much but perhaps this Capt William Dunn mentioned in NJ during the war of 1812, was a relative to this Phinius Dunn? Dear Harman, Now you see to be plowing the fields that I am. I am looking for a Phineas Dunn who died in Orange Co. NY. His will dated 1788, abstract, Orange Co. Gen Soc, Vol II pg5, reads, "PHINIUS DUN of Goshen Liber A page 57 Will made Dec 26, 1788 Probated Jan 9, 1789 Wife Anna Dun Daughters Zeruiah Dun, Elizabeth Dun Executors Anna Dun and Moses Carpenter Witnesses Calvil Shepard and Ezra Doty" This will was written some approx. 15 years after the death of Moses Carpenter's first wife: ELIZABETH RUNYON, daughter of RICHARD RUNYON and JANE VAN COURT of Morris Co, NJ. Moses and Elizabeth (Runyon) Carpenter had purchased a property from Samuel O. Sayer of Morris Co. in 1774 and only after her death did Moses take out a mortgage on the property. He later sold it to James Sayer. I am also guessing that their is a Sayer/Runyon relationship here also, but know not what. I have never been able to place this Phinius Dun, although I feel certain that he must be closely related to that RUNYON/VAN COURT family. There were other Runyons, a Peter VanCourt (I believe), Littles, and Ayers in Orange Co., but so far, I have not been able to find the relationships. Doris Horvath, in her booklet, however, shows her as a daughter of Benjamin Runyon and Anna Van Court. In any event, I am seeking to identify the parents of the Anna Dunn who married Jonathan Lenox on 17 June 1802. Harman Clark hclark@bypass.com >>
Hi all! I got a lot more responses than I anticipated about Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church. From the broad range of questions, I realized it would be helpful to let you know the nature of the history I have, and a bit about the church itself. Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church is not the original name of our congregation. It was formed in 1854 when a small group splintered off of First Presbyterian. Initially, the name was Second Presbyterian; the name was changed to Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1906. Webb Horton (1826-1908) had been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was the son of Isaac and Prudence (Knapp) Horton. In 1855, he married Elizabeth Ann Radeker of Montgomery. When first married, they lived in Narrowsburg (Sullivan Co.). Their residence changed once or twice, but they ended up in Middletown in 1868, and Mrs. Horton joined Second Presbyterian in 1874. Following his father's death, Eugene Horton had planned to build a huge mausoleum at Hillside Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Wight eventually persuaded him to use his financial where-with-all to support the church instead. When Eugene's sister, Carrie, also died in 1910. In 1911, Eugene Horton agreed to provide an endowment to help build a new church. The congregation applied for the name change to Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1912. The Centennial History of Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church is a narrative description of the evolution of the congregation. It is indexed, but the names included only the leadership of the congregation: ministers, session members (elders and deacons), and prominent families who played a significant role in the life of the congregation. This volume does not include baptism, marriage or general membership rosters... Questions regarding early baptisms and marriages probably need to be referred to the Presbytery. I believe that archival records are kept someplace central. Hope the clarification and background help a little bit. Lisa Stitt

To Joanne, and any others interested: I am a member and elder at Webb Horton Pres. Church in Middletown. If there's info you need, I probably have access to it (although I'm not sure how easily). I have a copy of the history at home. Lisa Stitt
