Bart, I am searching for a male Shafer/shaeffer (etc) who died in 1869 while working on the railroad. First name may be James or Joseph or??? He was married for less than one year to Mary Terwilliger, she was pregnant when he died. Would you possibly have a listing like this in your records? Keeping my fingers crossed. To my friends and colleagues in Orange County: Many of you are related to the Newberry family out of Orange County. Here is your chance to know what happened to John and Jemima Newberry's son James, who left Orange County in 1819 and headed for Ohio with many other Orange County Pioneers. What follows is a synopsis of the book. If you are interested or have questions, my contact information is at the bottom of the email. Sue ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The Quiet Patriarch, The Life of James Abram Newberry, Native American Pioneer - A Study of Native Americans In the Early Days of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" by Sue Simonich 2006. I know this is a long title, but I think it better explains what the book is about. Most people don't realize the grand scale of the history involved. It details the story of the early Mormon Church and how James Newberry and his family fit into the big picture. The research was in-depth, detailing the beginnings and goals of the Church and how the native people were included in the evolutionary scope of the faith. Joseph Smith arrived in Kirtland, Ohio in January of 1831. James was baptized in March as an early founding member. The story is chronological and covers most the major points of historical significance in Church history and interweaves how James and Mary were involved. Many of the topics covered in the book are not covered in other family histories I have reviewed. There is an accounting of all of James' children and wives. Before he died in July of 1880, he had two sets of children, adopted one, and married five women. His ambition and energy were amazing. There is a comprehensive family table in the appendix section and a chapter explaining where James Newberry's family went after being driven from Nauvoo. A lot of new information was uncovered and some of the old information put in proper perspective. The older family members of our parents generation, had no idea of what happened when the family split in Lee County and again at Council Bluffs. "The rest of the story" is based on available histories but is by no means the whole chronicle, which may never be entirely known. There are twenty-one chapters, 200+ pages, 500+ notes, seven appendices, maps, photos, a bibliography, and more. The appendices include, priesthood offices and ordinations, land records, family letters, Clay County petition (detailing the deplorable conditions and horror experienced by the Saints), known affiliations of James to the Council of Fifty, Will and Probate information, and a family table covering ALL his children and wives. Family members have helped me dig out this information, and they are well credited. Several eminent historians have done their best to help me untangle the various strands comprising this intricate historical drama. The printing will be on 50lb. stock, black and white, 8.5 x 11 and perfect bound. For those of you who don't understand what perfect bound means, it's like a paperback book. The cost will be $27.00 which DOES NOT INCLUDE postage, zip code information will determine the cost. However, I will be sending them at book rate, which hopefully will keep the cost under $4.00. If you want the book shipped faster, or with tracking etc. there will be a space on the form to add the appropriate information and additional funds. DEADLINE FOR PRE-ORDERS MARCH 20th 2006!!! The total cost is - $27.00 - which DOES NOT INCLUDE postage. I won't have a good idea about postage, until I know your zip code information. However, I will be sending them at book rate, which hopefully will keep the cost under $4.00. If you want the book shipped faster, or with tracking etc. there will be a space on the form to add the appropriate information and additional funds. I will be sending an order form in an email in a couple of weeks. Until then, please just send your pre-order request with your name and address in an email, so I can tell the printer how many to print. Please send an email to me at [email protected] with the subject line NEWBERRY BOOK. PLEASE - include your name, physical address, and email address. I have a shipping list to which I am adding names as orders come in. Thanks for your interest.
Does your book list other surnames? I am interested in a Moore family who went to Ohio about 1815 (Delaware County). Lois in Auburn, CA, USA

Hi list, am hoping someone can help me. Unfortunately my computer recently crashed and I have lost a lot of information. Someone had very nicely given me information on civil war pension applications on THOMAS COYNE (who was wounded at Battle of Brandy Station and imprisoned for three months) and his widow SARAH B. COYNE (who applied in 1912 if I remember correctly). With the computer crash I have lost the information before I could print it out. Could anybody tell me where to go to find this information (and I promise to print it out straight away instead of waiting). Thank you in advance. Pat Coyne, NY

Bev, I'm not sure if this is the same Dewitt Martin but the following is in Papakating Cem., Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ Martin, Thomas J., b 28 Dec 1824, d 20 Sep 1899; wife Sohia, b 3 Apr 1825, d 2 Aug 1906; son DEWITT C. , b 5 May 1852, d 20 Feb 1913. This seems to fit the information you sent. A few years on the birth year is not unusal in census. And, from what you sent, it looks like he was divorced, which would explain why he was buried with his parents instead of his wife. Carol, In the 1860 Census of Orange County, town of Warwick, there is a 34 year old Edward Ferris with his wife Ann (age 21). They have a son James, (age 14), a daughter Genett (age 11), a daughter Mary (age 8), and a daughter Jane (age 4). There was another girl, age 4 Caroline Redner, living in the same household. In the same year, there were at least 13 VanBuren living in Orange County with perhaps only two or three being of similar age to Mary and Jane Ferris above. I am interested in your information because there are members of the Ferris family with ties to Orange County who, through a descendent, married into the Bussell family of New York City (also with ties to Orange County). The "factoid" here is that there was an uncle of the Bussell family member that married the Ferris descendent who was married to a Mary E. VanBuren. This Mary E. VanBuren would have been born about 1823 and died in 1893. These names are all somehow connected and I am always alert for the possibility that there may be somebody else out there who knows something about the VanBuren connection to the Bussell family. Since the names in your query are very similar and from the same general area (Orange County), I thought it couldn't hurt to reply.
