    3. Newburgh as a city is close to Dutchess Co and Putnam county; perhaps she was born in New burgh but the family was not from orange County (I do not see many FAY or Kearney families not born in Ireland (or first generation, born NY but parents born Ireland) in Orange Co, NY in 1880 census. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Julianne Wright Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 10:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYORANGE] Julia FAY My greatgrandmother, Julia FAY, listed Newburgh as her place of birth on her marriage certificate. She was born on 1 Feb 1883, the daughter of James FAY and Julia KEARNEY [information drawn from her marriage and death certificates]. Her mother supposedly died in childbirth. I have contacted the clerks of both the City of Newburgh and the Town of Newburgh, and neither can find record of either this birth or death. Julia was orphaned at an early age and worked at an inn or restaurant owned by relatives. At some point, visitors at the inn "adopted" her and brought her in NYC, where she later married Michael Cleary and died in 1961. Any information or hints on what to do next would be greatly appreciated. I suppose writing to the Catholic churches in the area to search for baptism or burial records would be the next step. As I live in California, I can't search the records in person. I would love to hear from any Fays or Kearneys in the area who might be able to help. My grandmother (Julia's daughter) always said she was seventh generation American, which might mean one of the two sides had been in the area a long time. Should I extend my search to other towns near Newburgh? Thanks in advance! Julianne

    3. Hi Listers, Regarding posts about Westlake's Farm in Newburgh, NY: I have been going through more old pictures today and I found one which is labeled "Prospect Hill, Newburgh, NY, August, 1898". Some of the buildings in the background look like they are the same buildings in the photos labeled Westlake's Farm, although the photo is not labeled as such. The names of the people in the photo are listed on the matting for the photo. Here they are: Charles E. Hope Mrs. Charles E. Hope Mrs. John W. Sherwood Mrs. Keeler Edith H. Sherwood John W. Sherwood Mrs. Carrie H. Roberts Frank Keeler Robert H, Allis Edgar A. Pember I recognize all of these names as my ancestors except for Robert H. Allis and Edgar A. Pember. I am sending this information out in order to help nail down where in Newburgh, NY Prospect Hill was and to see if there are any people out there related to any of these names. Celia

There is one with several people in them and parts of some buildings can be seen in the distance. If anyone is interested in seeing these photos, I can scan and send them to you. I don't know how well they will scan. They are very old and some are quite faded. But- I can try. Celia

I really don't have to go too far back. Maybe there just wasn't anyone else to marry? First cousins marrying first cousins among my Orange Co people of Lamoreaux and Davenports. They seemed to like to intermarry with about 3 different families. I have a few CT families that did the same. I descend from 5 different couples at least twice. When you read literature like Jane Austen's works, they even talk about characters marrying their first cousins and it being encouraged. Valerie

    2. Marge Clark
    3. I am trying to find information on three people from Newburgh. They are not relatives but friends from back in the 1940 and 1950's. Mildred Boice who I believe married a person by the name of Shoemaker. Audrey Boice who I believe married someone by the name of Spear. Christine Boice who married Gunther Finkenhauer. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Marge Every day is a new song.
