ORANGE COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY 101 MAIN STREET GOSHEN, NY 10924 www.ocgsny.org Saturday, October 7, 2006 "VISIONARY LEADERS IN ORANGE COUNTY'S HISTORY" Presented by Professor Richard Hull Prof. Hull identifies a number of men and women who lived in Orange County at different points in history, from the colonial period to the present, who demonstrated the vision and leadership to lead the county in entirely new directions. These bold visionaries offered new and foresighted solutions to old problems. At sometimes great personal risk, they seized on opportunities that resulted not only in success for themselves but for the people who lived and gained a livelihood in our county. Hull will examine these personalities and  analyze what made them take risks and what were the consequences, not  only for their generation but for generations to follow. Dr. Richard Hull is professor of history at New York University and author of numerous works on aspects of Orange County history. He holds three NYU awards for teaching excellence, the Orange County Revered Citizen Award, a United Nations Distinguished Citizen Award, and a Distinguished Africanist Award from the New York State African Studies Association. He is a trustee emeritus of the Warwick Historical Society and has lived in Orange County most of his life.  He is a descendant of numerous old county families including the  Hulls, Gerows, Tuthills and Burns. He is married to Josephine Marvel  Hull and has two grown children. Our regular monthly meeting of OCGS will be held at 9:00 AM with the program following at 10:30 AM. 1. Re: [NYORANGE] Samuel Givens
    2. Patty, Please tell me more about your Samuel Givens. My ancestors included a Samuel Fowler Givens. He spelled his surname without the "a" But most of my Giveans ancestors, spelled it with the "a." I am descended from John Giveans who lived in the late 1700's and died about 1835--if my memory serves me. I can look it up if you think there is a connection. Mona, Richmond, IN

    1. old Beattie/Cumming family bible
    2. Rex Bertram
    3. Hi all. I recently acquired a very old bible that apparently belonged to David BEATTIE, who was born 1828. His wife was Isabella H. CUMMING, born 1826. This family lived mostly in Orange Co., NY. Children of David and Isabella were: Thomas Cumming BEATTIE 1859 Sarah Allice Beattie 1857 Isabella Hamilton BEATTIE 1859 William C. BEATTIE 1862 This bible was published in 1857. There are many of the families birth, death, and marriages recorded in the bible. Sarah Alice married James McWilliams. Isabella Hamilton married Robert McCready. Thomas C. married Ruby MILLER. I am not connected to this family, and would like to be able to put the bible in the hands of a descendant. If anyone is connected to this family, or know of anyone that is connected, please feel free to contact me. Rex Bertram 132 S. 1. Re: Pugh family in Orange County
    2. Deb Meade
    3. My husband and I will be in the Middletown-Goshen area on the 12 and 13th of Sept. I am hoping to find some information on the Pugh family. My Pughs, originally from Ireland, came to NY in 1856-1860, and they were in Middletown for a short time. All I knew of originally, were brothers James (1841) John (1842) and Francis (?). I now see there were other Pughs in Middletown; Mary born around 1825, Frank, born around 1821, wife Anne (Kilbride 1832) and mother Catherine. Frank and Anne were born in Goshen in 1860. He died sometime before 1878 and she remarried a Gleeson. Their children were Elizabeth (1871) Francis (1875), James (1862) and John 12 (1868)There was also John b. ~1820 and James, b. ~ 1820 or 1821. There was also a Michael Pugh drafted out of Wallkill Oct 9, 1863. James Pugh (1841) married Ellen Carroll in Middletown, at St Joseph's Church in Middletown New York, Orange County. My Pugh's had migrated to Iowa by 1870. They were Catholic, and worked on the railroad in Iowa, I assume they worked on the railroad in NY. I would like to find some proof that these Pugh's were related. I only have a day in Middletown and want to make the best use of it. Any ideas where the best places would be to visit? The OCGS is not open when we are going to be there; do you know if any of the libraries would have access to some of the geneological records? I would love to find some obits if possible to help link the names. It seems reasonable to me that these Pughs are all related, especially with the naming pattern. The only one who falls out is Michael. Thanks for any help you can offer. Deb Meade

Newburgh Free Library has a more extensive microfilm collection (not sure if it covers Goshen papers.) The Surrogates Court in Goshen would have any probate records. I'm not familiar with the holdings of other area libraries.

They tell what is in the censuses for various years, and which counties had state censuses in which years. Specifically, "Beginning in 1855, the name of every person in the household is listed." I hope this helps you and others with similar questions about the NY state censuses, very few of which have ever been indexed. Marty Irons
