Is Stephen Yeoman listed in the book? Or any Fountains? He left the county sometime between the revolutionary war and before 1800. Hi: I knew a Frank SAYRE that lived in Monsey, Rockland Co., New York. He lived across the street from our house on Route 306. He was a hermit and lived in a old stone house on about 7 acres of property. He was a grounds keeper and handyman to a Jewish settlement up the road from our house. He was a collector of anything and everything. My buddy and I would talk to him all the time. He died around 1950, I don't think they ever found any relatives of his. We found him on his bed one morning dead, his false teeth laying on his chest. We called the police and they put a pad lock on the door and all the things he had collected over the years disappeared. He was going to give me his stamp collection and my buddy was going to get his coin collection. He had stamps in cigar boxes and they were staked in 3 rows almost to the celing of his house. He had a sword given to his grandfather engraved from the Civil War. He had a matched set of dualing pistols in the original case. He had every copy of National Geographic, Sears catalog, New York Times and more. If the Jewish people had a problem with something working, they gave it to him. Many times I saw him wheeling a wheelbarrow down the road with a stove, wash machine or refrigerator in it. My mother use to take him to the bank to deposit his money. He was a very simple man but a very interesting man we used to talk for hours. Judy, When I checked out those LDS films I could read the page numbers on some and had to guess where to find my pages. Am interested in James Sayre. Phoebe in CA
Judy, Did you by chance see anything about a John Johnson or Isaac Newman mentioned. I don't know if they were in Orange Co. or the next county west of there. They should have been there in the end of the 1700's 1780-1800. maybe after as well. Sometimes the film reader has the capasity to change from negative to positive immages. I ordered Book C of deeds for Orange County for a deed 1777 grantee Mercy Huff to James Sayre p 527 LDS has filmed this book so words are in white and background black. there are no page numbers on the pages and rest of page are not a good read Has anyone used this book and was able to find a code for page numbers? Also, in Book T lds film 828555 the first 10 pages had the sale of large chunks of land in Orange County including Cheesecock Patent property. I did not copy it but it contained the names of original English owners of this land. Judy Ullman

Sure am Steve.
Several members of the Clemence family are supposed to be buried there. It's in New Windsor, I believe. I can find out more details if you're really interested in taking a few photos for me. Where in Orange County is the Bethlehem Church. Steve.
Is there anyone there who might be willing to take some photographs in the cemetery by the Bethlehem Church? Jane

For Elizabeth and Florence, I have taken some recent photos of Goodwill Church and some of the stones in the vintage Cemetery--if you aren't from this area or don't have this, I would be happy to forward. There are Harris, Barber, Haines, and Woodruff stones there--probably others too, but those were the only ones I saw when I took some photos of the older stones (There are Revolutionary Soldiers buried there as well and the cemetery was in use before the Revolution, I believe.). I've been working on a website of local history and the two churches you mention are both nearby. I have photos of Goodwill and plan to take some of Hopewell Church soon. There is also a book(let) entitled "Newburgh in the American Revolution," by Albert Gedney Barratt with a name index (unfortunately no publication date). This modern booklet (50 pages) does have the following people mentioned... Harris: page Benjamin, 5 James, 4&5 John, 13, 15 Robert, 8 Thomas, 5 Howell David, 16 Jeremiah, 6 Phineas, 20 Barber Col., 43 Francis, 43 Patrick, 43 I think there was a Howell Cemetery in the Town of Crawford in Pine Bush, NY not far away (I can check if you don't have this)--Hopewell church is just a few miles further and either in or near Thompson Ridge. Walden, NY has a Woodruff Street and many of the names are or were local surnames. Hope this helps. Gail I have an ancestor Johannes Slot (Slott) who is supposedly buried in the pre-revolutionary section of the Goodwill cemetery. I have heard that some of the old stones have been stacked up somewhere on the property. Johannes died about 1748 +/-. One of his sons from a first marriage is Stephen Sloat, founder of Sloatsburg. I am from his second wife and my line runs thru Pine Bush with burials in New Prospect Cemetery. I have pix of the New Prospect and Hopewell ancestor gravestones. If you run across any indication of Sloat buried at Goodwill I would love to hear of it. There are no Sloats in the Goodwill book. Thanks Frank Sloat --- Gail Yeaple <[email protected]> wrote: > For Elizabeth and Florence, > > I have taken some recent photos of Goodwill Church and some of the > stones > in the vintage Cemetery--if you aren't from this area or don't have > this, I > would be happy to forward. Hi Harris and Northern Ireland relatives, The James Hill family came from Ireland and previously Scotland but I'd have to check on the county. The Hill family explored Sounthern US, before settling in Orange County near Montgomery. My mother's Harris family came from Western NY., Canandaigua Lake.
Hi Elizabeth, Just a quick note. My Stephenson family came from County Longford around1831 and settled in the Bethel area of Sullivan Co NY. When my 2 sisters and I went to Co Longford, Ireland we discovered that 95 % of the peopl there are Catholic. My Stephenson family were Methodist. Charles Clinton , b.1690 Ireland of English and Scotish decent, left Co Lonford with relatives and neighbors May 1729 and settled in Little Britian ( Town of New Windsor, Orange Co NY. In the History of Orange Co NY, by Ruttenber and Clark., there is an account of the crossing over; many family names are metioned, a very sad account which makes me cry every time I read it. The Thompson brothers of Longford settled in Thompson Ridge ( about 1776, Town of Mongomery ) now the Town of Crawford, Orange Co NY. They or their desc helped to build the church there know as the Hopewell Church ( a daughter church formed by the older congregergation of the Goodwill Church). Hope this was helpful.
