Subject: [NYORANGE] (Limited) offer to check Orange County NY coroners' reports 1905 to 1950 Hi folks, I am repeating my limited offer to look for unusual deaths in coroners reports...until December 31st of this year. Requests received after December 31st will not be answered. Please read all of this offer before sending requests, as there are time limits involved. From 1905 to 1950 (only) coroners in Orange County NY presented annual reports to the county Board of Supervisors of UNUSUAL deaths which they had investigated ...deaths like murder, suicide, drowning, hit by a train, kicked by a horse, etc...only cases where a doctor was not present to sign a death certificate. These were published in the "Board of Supervisors Report" for that year. They consist of just one paragraph, which tells who died, when, where and why (cause of death). A handful of them named other relatives. During this 46-year period 6,016 individual reports were published, covering 3,453 different surnames...far too many to post here. This is a valuable resource that was not noticed until a few years ago. They are not death certificates, and give limited information, but they help focus on date and place of death. A volunteer at Orange County Genealogical Society created an index of these reports. I have a copy of the index at home, and can quickly tell if any given name was included. From now until 31 December I will volunteer to check the index of coroners' reports found in the Orange County (NY) "Board of Supervisors Reports", and if the name requested is located, to quote the actual report on this list. Before you request a lookup, remember the parameters: 1. Must have died in Orange County NY. 2. Must have died between 1905 and 1950. 3. Must not have died in a hospital or in the presence of a doctor. 4. Send only name and (approximate) year of death...nothing else, as the index is by name and date of investigation. If found, it will tell the year and page. Please, no long-winded explanations...just one line per death, and no "fishing parties" such as "any Smith between 1920 and 1930". If found in the index, I will go to OCGS in Goshen and copy the exact report, then post it to the list. If not found in the index, I will tell you off-list, so as not to waste the time of hundreds of people on the list. So go ahead and send requests if you think someone may have died under unusual circumstances in Orange County NY between 1905 and 1950. I'll try my best for you...until December 31st of this year. Mangle Minthorne and John Staples were NYC merchants, brothers in law, with loyalist leanings. When the British occupied NYC, they apparently fled to New Cornwall where they bought farms. Later they returned to NYC during the occupation and the farms were sequestered by the Patriots. After the war they tried to get the rents which others had paid on the farms returned to them but without success; the State legislature finally rejected their pleas in the 1790s. Minthorne went on to become a New York City Alderman, Tammany leader, and father-in-law of Daniel D. Tompkins twice Governor of NY and twice VP of the US under Monroe. You can get their story in my Minthorne Family in NY Families at www.popenoe.com. Mangle Minthorne was probably related to Capt. John Minthorne who lived in Warwick and fought with the militia during the Revolution, though I have not be able to prove it. The Sayres are detailed in Banta's "Lineage of Thomas Sayre" 1901. Thomas of Southhampton had a grandson, Job, father of James Sayre who was up in Cornwall, later moved to Goshen where he married Susanna Seely, daughter of Ebenezer Seely, one of the two half-brothers from Stamford, CT who started the Seely line in Orange County. They were prominent in Blooming Grove. Another grandson, Thomas, married Susannah Seely, daughter of Samuel Seely, the other Seely half-brother and they moved to Warwick where he had a mill. Thomas Mapes had a daughter Mary, 1738-1821, who married another James Sayre, cousin of the first. They lived on the road from Chester to Florida. He must have moved down from Cornwall also. Gets complicated doesn't it? Anyway, the James Sayre of our interest was born 3 Jan 1719/20 and died before 1790, not 1890 and was buried in Blooming Grove. His widow took her family to Newtown, south of Elmira and in 1792 moved up to Horseheads, about 6 miles north of Elmira. I don't know anything about Mercy Hoff. Ebenezer Seely had a daughter Mercy and there were several by that name around in the family so that might be where she comes from. Obviously a relative of some kind. Have fun! Jim, While information on the direct ancesors is immediately more satisfying, it is often the ancillary relatives that lead you to a great breakthru. Nancy, Thank you for the help. It is a miracle that you recognized those names in the Lewis Hall household. If I had looked at that page 5 times, I would have never recognized it, with that handwriting. You are very good. In 1860, now we have Abigail Huff (age 47-52) and her youngest daughter living with Lewis Hall (age 53) in Blooming Grove, Orange Co., NY , and her middle daughter, Amelia, living with James Hall (age 33) in Monroe, Orange Co., NY. somehow, I don't think that that is a coincidence. Thanks!!! v/r, Beverly Alexander Culpeper, VA I hear ethereal voices, persuasive, soft and still Daughter, if you don't remember us, who will? Hi Beverly.Found the following in the "Whig Press Marriage Notices1851-1865";Miller,John O. of Monroe m Deliah Huff of Blooming Grove,26 Aug(6 Sept1854).This info can't answer your questions, but if it is the Delia you memtioned, hopefully the location of Blooming Grove may help you in some way. Jim Norris
In 1830 there is a Milicent HUFF in Monroe, Orange Co., NY. Oddly, there are two males between 70 - 80 along with a lot of other persons in the household, ages ranging from under 5 to 70-80. In 1820 there are two Huffs in Monroe, Abraham and John. Abraham seems to be the oldest. I suspect they do connect somehow to those Huffs in Sussex Co., NJ. In the 1860 Census, Blooming Grove, Orange Co., NY there is a Matilda HUFF (13) and Abigail HUFF (52) living in the household of Lewis HALL. They have been indexed as HAFF but clearly it's HUFF when you look at it. Unfortunately, this census doesn't identify the relationship of persons to the head, but it's possible Lewis HALL is a brother to Abigail. Also possible his wife Mary I. is a sister to her or, they are not related at all. But I do think it's worth looking into. Even though the ages are a little inconsistent with the 1850 census, I do think this is the same family and I think it's safe to assume that Jonah has died by now. All: I am doing some reserach for a lovely lady who wants to join the DAR. We are stopped at the moment at the following information: Jonah HUFF b. abt 1803 NY, with a wife Abigail b. Abt 1813 NY. In the 1850 Census, they are in Monroe, Orange Co, NY, and vanish by the 1860 Census. In the 1850 Census, they have Delia b. Abt 1839, Amelia "Milly" b. Abt 1843, and Matilda b. Abt 1848. In 1860: Jonah and Abigail have vanished, as have Delia and Matilda HUFF. Amelia Huff is a Domestic Servant (age 17) in the family of James HALL of Monroe, Orange Co, NY. By 1880: Eugene KNIBBS (son of George KNIBBS and Hannah GARRETT) and Amelia are married, and have 3 children with them: Mary D. b. Abt 1875, Floyd C. b. Abt 1878, and Annia A. b. Abt. Jan 1880. In MAr 1882, they had Harriett "HAttie" R. KNIBBS (who later married a Harry JOHNSTON). I need the following info: A. What is the maiden name of Abigail who married Jonah Huff? B. When and where were they married? C. Did they both die, between 1850 and 1860 and what happened to Matilda in the 1860 census? She later evidently married a DOUGLAS, because in 1880 she's living with her sister, but as Matilda DOUGLAS. D. When and where were Eugene KNIBBS and Amelia HUFF married? Also need any sources that you have for this data, if I am to use it for her DAR application. Will share anything that I know v/r, Beverly Alexander Regent, Fauquier Court House Chapter, NSDAR Warrenton, VA I hear ethereal voices, persuasive, soft and still Daughter, if you don't remember us, who will? Marty, What a wonderful offer. I hope you don't get cought up it a storm like I did when I offered something like this. I am looking for a family and have no idea if you would have them. Hi folks, I am repeating my limited offer to look for unusual deaths in coroners reports...until December 31st of this year. Requests received after December 31st will not be answered. Requests received after that date will not be answered. Marty Irons [email protected] All e-mail scanned by Norton 2005 anti-virus, updated online daily.
