Stephen was from around Cornwall in Orange County. The wedding was most likely in the early 1770s. Yes, I know that almost everyone says Abigail was the daughter of Mathew Fountain and Elisabeth of Westchester, but there are just too many discrepancies. I suspect this may not be true, but I also haven't found proof one way or the other. 3. I have access to Heritage Quest through my membership to NYG&B (at least until April). I also have an ancestry subscription. When I can't find someone on ancestry, I try heritageQuest and usually do locate them. I don't know if the difference is in the indexing, the transcribing, or the search engine, but there is a difference. Of course the best index when not finding a name and misspelling is suspected is the written indexes--Accelerated Indexing System or some such name. The wrong spelling is more apt to be obvious looking at the index yourself instead of relying on a search engine to find it. Barbara "Pamela J. 1. [NYORANGE] NYS Library possible weekend hours
    2. Marty
    3. As a genealogy researcher I am sure you would love to be able to utilize the wonderful research material available at the New York State Library in Albany during the weekend. This would make it so much easier for out of state travelers and especially for those local researchers who work full time. Please read the following two items that deal with an effort to have weekend hours at the library and if you see, fit please write a letter, email or fax as requested below. As a presentation to the Regents on this topic is being made on January 8, time is of the utmost importance. If this proposal for weekend hours interest you, send an email or fax before January 8 to have your voice heard. Thanks, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY Email From Jeanne Keefe - Troy Irish Genealogy Webmaster Hello Everyone: On Friday I received this email from Loretta Ebert, Director, New York State Library and I am asking for your help. Loretta, who was previously my Director of Libraries at RPI, moved on to the NYS Library last summer and before she left Rensselaer I asked her to look into the possibility of keeping the NYS library open for one day over the weekend. Since most of us work 9-5, M-F, we are unable to do any research at our State Library because we can't get there when its open during the week. I also mentioned that many genealogists travel to the Albany-Troy-Schenectady area to do family research and are severely limited by the library's present schedule. Weekend hours, even if only one day, would allow more of us to access the very important resources that are only available at the NYS Library. In September, I met Loretta and she mentioned that she was encountering some resistance to the idea, but felt confident that she would be able to open the library, maybe on Saturdays, at some point late in the Fall. In the following letter you will see that she is asking for some help in convincing the Board of Regents to allow her to open the library on the weekend and has asked for letters (or emails)in support of this move. Please read her letter below and take a few minutes to mail, email or fax a brief letter to Loretta in support of her initiative. I think it is a very important opportunity for genealogists and historians to have their concerns voiced and research needs recognized. This is also a unique opportunity to be involved in a change that has the potential to improve access to these important records and resources, especially for those of us needing to do family research in the New York State Library. For more information about the NYS Research Library's genealogy collections use this link: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/gengen.htm.Thank you all very much, in advance, for taking the time to read this and I hope you can take a few minutes to send Loretta a response by the end of the week. I am preparing a presentation to the Regents in early January (8th) about opening the library on Saturdays. As I recall, you were supportive of this idea. I wonder if you would be willing to send a letter to me advocating extended hours for the library, citing difficulties with the current Monday-Friday 9 to 5 schedule and the lack of access to the "wonderful" resources of the New York State Library. Use whatever perspectives you have: librarian, genealogist, local historian, or all of them! I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you know of others who could provide similar supportive letters, would you ask them to send such to me too, or let me know their names? Thanks so much for your help, I think these kinds of testimonials are most effective with the power structure around here. 1. [NYORANGE] (Limited) offer to check Orange County NY coroners' reports 1905 to 1950
    2. Marty
    3. (Please note - this limited offer expires 31 December 2006) Hi folks, From 1905 to 1950 (only) coroners in Orange County NY presented annual reports to the county Board of Supervisors of UNUSUAL deaths which they had investigated ...deaths like murder, suicide, drowning, hit by a train, kicked by a horse, etc...only cases where a doctor was not present to sign a death certificate. These were published in the "Board of Supervisors Report" for that year. They consist of just one paragraph, which tells who died, when, where and why (cause of death). A handful of them named other relatives. During this 46-year period 6,016 individual reports were published, covering 3,453 different surnames...far too many to post here. This is a valuable resource that was not noticed until a few years ago. They are not death certificates, and give limited information, but they help focus on date and place of death. A volunteer at Orange County Genealogical Society created an index of these reports. I have a copy of the index at home, and can quickly tell if any given name was included. From now until 31 December I will volunteer to check the index of coroners' reports found in the Orange County (NY) "Board of Supervisors Reports", and if the name requested is located, to quote the actual report on this list. Before you request a lookup, remember the parameters: 1. Must have died in Orange County NY. 2. Must have died between 1905 and 1950. 3. Must not have died in a hospital or in the presence of a doctor. 4. Send only name and (approximate) year of death...nothing else, as the index is by name and date of investigation. If found, it will tell the year and page. Please, no long-winded explanations...just one line per death, and no "fishing parties" such as "any Smith between 1920 and 1930". If found in the index, I will go to OCGS in Goshen and copy the exact report, then post it to the list. If not found in the index, I will tell you off-list, so as not to waste the time of hundreds of people on the list. So go ahead and send requests if you think someone may have died under unusual circumstances in Orange County NY between 1905 and 1950. I'll try my best for you...until 31 December. Requests received after that date will not be answered. Marty Irons [email protected] All e-mail scanned by Norton 2005 anti-virus, updated online daily. My grandparents and great-grandparents are there too. It may not be until January, but I can look up your people. My parents were able to contact the caretaker a few times, let me see if my mother still have that info (it's her family). I only live an hour away. Valerie

It took me a while to find the graves, even though my mom gave me (vague) directions. I'm glad I took the time to stroll through the cemetery though. Unfortunately I'm in KY now so its not practical for me to take a walk and look for you. Chris Wells
