    3. Does anyone know of any Children's Homes/Orphanages in Newburgh in 1880? I found a Children's Home in 1900 at 18 High Street but cannot find them in the 1880 census. I'm searching for an August Blumberg who was born between 1874 and 1880. His father deserted the family in 1880 and his mother died 6 months later. Newburgh city clerk has no record of his birth. The only mention I have of his existence is from a 1941 obituary saying that at that time he was living in Alberta Canada. I've written letters to all the Blumberg listings I could find in the Canadian telephone book with no luck. I've corresponded with the Alberta Genealogical Society and they give me no hope of finding him. This is one brick wall I don't think I will ever break through or get around. Thank you for any replies. Marge If you want to hear the angels . . listen with your heart.

    2. Jim, You are right about Richard Rutan and Mary Ann Fort being the parents of Laura L Rutan Martin. I found her death in "Wallkill Orange County, New York, Volume One" it includes Vital Statistics 1881-1913, Census 1900, and Area Obituaries. I can't help you with the Rutan line because I descend from the Martin-Newkirk union. 1. [NYORANGE] SCHOLDERER / WILBUR / KENDALL research
    2. Sholder, Kevin L.
    3. Good evening, well maybe morning, I'm Kevin L. Sholder, let me apologize if you receive this on more then one list as this posting covers the following counties within New York: Broome, Dutchess, Greene and Orange. I'm researching the SCHOLDERER family of New York and their descendants. Johann Jacob SCHOLDERER (b. 1814 - d. 1893) sailed on the Ship Rattler in July of 1854 bringing with him his wife Johanna (Hanna) Christiana PFÄFFLIN (b. 1821 - d. 1889), they were both residents of Rosenfeld in the Kingdom of Württemberg before coming to America. Their family consisted of four (4) small children: Maria Barbara (b. 1847), Eleonora (b. 1849), Johannes (John) (b. 1851) and Luise (Louise) Christiana (b. 1854). Upon their arrival in America, they settled in Hunter, Greene County, New York where they can be found in the 1860 through 1880 census records. They had three (3) more children in Hunter: Jacob J. (b. 1856), George C. (b. 1858) and Minnie H. (b. 1863). As their children left had families of their own, I know the following about them and their families: 1. Maria Barbara SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860 census with her parents, then by 1870, she is no longer listed. No further information at this time. 2. Eleonora SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860 census with her parents, then by 1870, she is no longer listed. No further information at this time. 3. Johannes (John) SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860 and 1870 census with his parents in Hunter, Greene County. Then by 1880 he is in Newburgh, Orange County, where he marries Mary J. [—?—]. They have one child, George H. SCHOLDERER. By 1910 this family has moved to Binghamton, Broome County, where it seems George H. SCHOLDERER was an undertaker. I found the following entry in an obituary: "A 1947 graduate of Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, Pa., George was employed at the George H. Scholderer Home for Funerals in Binghamton from January 1948 until January 1952." No further information at this time. 4. Luise (Louise) Christiana SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860 and 1870 census with her parents in Hunter, Greene County. Then she apparently married Truman WILBUR and moved to Cairo, Greene County sometime before 1883 when Truman dies at the age of 32. No further information at this time. 5. Jacob J. SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860 census with his parents in Hunter, Greene County, then dies in September of 1860. 6. George C. SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census with his parents in Hunter, Greene County. Then he apparently married Nellie Magdalene KENDALL with whom he appears in the 1920 census for Beekman Township, Dutchess County. No further information at this time. 7. Minnie H. SCHOLDERER, appears in the 1870 and 1880 census with his parents in Hunter, Greene County, then by 1900, her whereabouts are unknown. Using the microfilm of the church records of Rosenfeld, this family has been traced back several generations. I am now in the process of researching the descendents of this family. If anyone can help in this endeavor, with any additional clues that I can research they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Kevin L. 1. [NYORANGE] JORDAN/SWARTHOUT
    2. Seeking parents of JOHN JORDAN born 6 Mar 1764 where I know not. He died 26 Jan 1850 Pike, Wyoming Co, NY, but buried in family lot inn Friendship, Allegany Co., NY. He married 15 Sep 1785 probably in or near Goshen, Orange Co., NY Julia SWARTOUT born 18 Nov 1769 daughter of Jacobus SWARTOUT who before and during the Revolution lived in Sugar Loaf which is now in town of Chester, Orange Co., NY but then in town of Warwick, Orange Co., NY. Following children born to John and Julia: Michael 1786 in Orange Co; William 1788; Jesse 1790; James 1791; John 1792; Andrew; 1795; Betsey 1797; Isaiah 1799; Sally (Patty) 1801; JACOB 1803; Julia Margaret 1805; Unnamed son 1807 at which time Julia probably died because she does not appear in 1810 census. John/Julia do not appear in the 1790 census of NYS in their own home with two sons nor have I found them in PA, NJ or any N.E. state. By 1800, JORDAN family residing in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY. >From there, Michael, William and Jesse settled in and died in Steuben Co. James and John settled town of Cuba, Allegany Co., NY; Isaiah, after living with his brother, Michael in Steuben Co., migrated on to Allegany Co and he and brothers Andrew and JACOB settled in town of Wirt of Allegany Co., NY. Betsey (Elizabeth) Jordan married Sebastion WELLER and lived in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co., NY. Sally married John DYGERT and lived in Montgomery Co, NY. Julia Margaret married Charles PHELPS, migrated to Pike, Wyoming Co. and it was at her home that JOHN died in 1850. In 1840, JOHN JORDAN is still residing at Cherry Valley but by 1848 has migrated to town of Wirt and because he died before 1850 census was taken, it has been family tradition that he lived with his son, JACOB, but his will probate states he died at home of his daughter in Wyoming Co. ANY help would be appreciate on these above mentioned families.... Please email me at [email protected]

    3. >From what I've read, the two were scanned and indexed independently, so one may be more accurate on a given name than the other. Also the quality of the image varies. On a recent occasion, the page I was looking for was illegible on Ancestry because it was too dark and illegible on Heritage Quest because it was too light. I finally looked at the microfilm at my local historical society and it was perfectly clear. I find that Ancestry has better search capability (name variations, more fields to search, etc.), but Heritage Quest images are apt to be better. The main problem with the Heritage Quest index is that it searches for the exact name you enter without offering variations on the name.
